Take a shopping trip and you’re bound to find plenty of super cute clothes. But have you ever thought about the brains behind them? Fashion designers are the starting point for all of the clothing on the racks. Though the end products can be quite different, the passion remains the same. Fashion design is to enjoy a training that is demanding, challenging, and of the highest quality. This article will give an insight of the starting point of the fashion design process to the final garment by students from London College of Fashion.

This is “La crème de la crème”, the heart of the fashion design, here summed it up in a unique article illustrated by exclusive sketching and pictures.

Fashion designers aren’t not just artists they are creators. Designers brainstorm everyday for new ideas, they look for inspiration in the street, from music or movies, in books, from experimentation… Also the background of the designer plays a very important part in the researching process.

Fashion designers work in different ways. Some sketch their ideas on paper, while others drape fabric on a stand. However most of the sketches and draping are just development of ideas, and the rest is chosen to create the final outfit. When a designer is completely satisfied with the fit of the toile, he or she will consult a professional pattern maker that then makes the finished, working version of the pattern out of card. The pattern maker’s job is very precise and painstaking. The fit of the finished garment depends on their accuracy. Finally, a sample garment is made up and tested on a model. In this case the students are both designing and making the garment.

no matter how fashionable we consider ourselves. True luxury still has its patrons, and one such luxury is couture. The market has changed, like it always does. What have not changed are the traditions of impeccable tailoring, great attention to detail and a possibility of tastefully splendid clothes. Is couture unwearable? True, the theatre pieces so often shown in fashion shows around the world baffle imagination, but that is their job. It is not the rule however. Designers today have changed how we look at clothes. Today,

Many people are of the belief that haute couture is well past its prime, well past its time. It is a relic of an age gone by. When life was slow, and people had time. When people would get dressed for dinner and ladies had maids. But that is not the case anymore. In a world of instant soup, who has the time for couture? Haute couture is a consummate survivor. Its demise has been predicted very often. But these trying times, with wars and recessions, have seen couture rise above its critics. Haute couture has evolved with the passage of time.

In this age of strained economic circumstances and shaken belief in clothing consumption, all fashion is scrutinized. It is here that haute couture really comes through. What it offers in distinction of design and technique is unmatched; and this is even more apparent today, when instant fashion is widespread. The custom fittings are what make you special. Today more than ever, it is the time invested which is the real cost. Fashion moves at an alarming pace, which makes the position of haute couture so critical. However, the market for couture is firmly in place, as is the skill. The workmanship is still there, as is the finery. Gorgeous fabrics are further beautified with gold thread, patiently sewn by hand, creating a truly one of a kind garment. These are personalized by both the owner and the maker. There is nothing quite like the perfect fit. Globally, there is a renewed interest in quality, in things that will stand the test of time. Haute couture is no longer dictatorial, as it once was. Street style expresses individualism and is often times influenced by the social and political situations that they are involved in as well as music. Street style fashion can be divided into sub- cultures. These subcultures include punk, Bohemianism, hippie, casuals, new romanticism, hip hop culture, etc. Recent history is proof that past youth subcultures have influenced mainstream fashion. Although it is the high- end designers that are remembered for the beautiful couture garments, and the outfits worn by celebrities, it is actually the youth subcultures

that are the original inventors of the style. When people think of street style, by default, a rather bizarre image pops up in their head. This is not entirely false, as some street style is comparatively extravagant. However, some street style is composed of everyday items of clothing, with just a slight difference in how they carry themselves off. For example, in the image below, there are two young ladies, wearing a rather similar combination, however, the one on the left would attract much more attention. Many researchers try to look into the logic

Yes, I do. I’m constantly involved and evolved in the industry whether creating a story or telling it, transmitting it. I enjoy every second in this world. Photography or styling is my way to communicates feelings through an IMAGE.

Do you have any experience as a stylist or in any other job in fashion?

There’s not a favorite designer for me, I like diversity and different styles but Alexander McQueen, what he did while he was alive was just ART. He was not just a designer he was an ARTIST. Karl Lagerfeld of course.

Who’s your favorite designer?

There not a particularly stylist I look up to, the team that creates the images is what I love the most. Obviously there are some particularly styles I love more than other, and Edward Enninful and Grace Coddington I like how they tell their stories. Emmanuele Alt I Love too, just her sense of style is stunningly breathtaking.

Who’s your favorite stylist?

having to create a world that only exists in my mind transmitting that into a photograph/ a story. I enjoy every part of styling it’s like telling a story without word, just images. AMAZING. Plus, it introduced me to enjoy that world as I never lived it before through photography.

What did you like the most about studying styling?

fashion in Milan so far has been “heritage” which is to say that designers are going back to their roots. We can find in Milan that Sexy powerful woman from Versace and Dolce & Gabbana or Ds2 and that pump built men, firing masculinity. It already established it has that identity. Whereas in London it continues evolving. The opportunity to young new talents are more appreciated, we still find that vintage essence from the 60s and 70s, but in a mature world. You can find variety in the mixture of young designer and the established Houses. London it’s all about new creating craziness, boundaries, and evolving.

What do you think about fashion in Milan compared to London?

It does not work the way our grumpy teachers taught us. You need to feel the art and to help us with it we need to know the unique history and understand the atmosphere in order to appreciate the piece of artwork! Opened in 2007, Winzavod, Moscow Centre for Contemporary art, was one of a kind. Among other picture galleries and museums, widely known and respected, Winzavod was almost a breath of fresh air. The gallery allows new artists to show and express themselves. This helps the new generation to get familiar with big names in their own city. Unfortunately, it is very rare to see youngster in galleries these

visitors each day. The atmosphere is the main reason why this Centre became so popular. They come and hang out with their friends, spend some good time and at the same time take a look at the art, making fun useful. The story behind the building creates an even more interest to Winzavod. It is located in the former brewery “Moscow Bavaria”. The walls are still made out of red bricks and floor out of old wood. Winzavod not only has galleries, but it also has shops which sells clothes from independent designers, has a cozy cafes with delicious coffee and mouth watering bakery. With the times changing there are a lot of new galleries which have opened to showcase artwork as

Some friends and I had the opportunity to go to London Fashion Week, our expectations were to be able to enter all the shows we could, but not everything was as perfect as it first seemed. The people who had managed to give us the supposed “press passes” to enter the shows were only for “exhibitions” but not for catwalks. So in order to get to the shows at Somerset House there was a tactic, we had to get 40min / 1 hour before the show and then

in shock that I got in without any problem. I went inside and

I could not believe it, I was still

said, “Yes, let this lady go in”!

I got into the row trying to do what everyone was doing; showing their passes to the guards and then a woman was looked through a list but mostly they could not get in because the name did not appear written in the list. Finally, I showed my pass and while they were checking on the list, I was super nervous hoping I could get in and suddenly the woman

within minutes the show started! It was an incredible experience to witness in person the show, garments, models, everything! And also I had the opportunity to see people like Anna Wintour, Mario Testino, Kate Hudson, Mary-Kate Olsen, Kristen Stewart and others. Amazing and unforgettable!
