Henry was a red-tailed hawk. He lived at the top of a little mountain in the desert.

1

Henry enjoyed soaring through the desert sky, looking for rabbits and other little animals to catch and eat.

2

However, Henry was lonely. He lived all by himself. He often dreamed of finding a mate and having a family.

3

One day, while Henry was out hunting, he spotted another hawk in the distance. He flew closer to get a better look at his new neighbor.

4 6

Henry saw that this other hawk was much bigger than he was. This meant that she was a female! Her name was Helena.

5

Henry flew high up into the sky and then did a steep dive and rolled over several times. This really impressed Helena.

6

Helena then flew up high and did the same dive and roll. Henry and Helena did this “dance five times. They were in love!

7

Helena followed Henry back to his mountain. There they built a nest in the arms of a big cactus.

8 16

In March, Helena laid three eggs. She sat on the eggs to keep them warm while Henry hunted and brought back food.

9

After a month, the eggs hatched and out came three baby hawks, all covered in white feathers.

10

The babies were very hungry. So Henry and Helena had to do a lot of hunting to keep them fed.

11

It was hard work, but Henry was very happy. Now he had his family!
