National Hunger Awareness Month is held in the month of June. The overarching objective of National Hunger Awareness Month is to educate communities nationwide that hunger exists throughout the year not just during the holiday season. Food security is necessary to lead a productive, healthy, and active life. It has been reported that more than forty-nine (49) million Americans lack reliable access to the food. Childhood hunger is a growing reality in America. In one of the wealthiest nations in the world, the prevalence of childhood hunger is a national travesty and for many a well kept secret. For families in need, the summer months present special challenges because they rely on the free and/or reduced school breakfast and lunch programs to provide essential meals for their children during the school-year. These feeding programs are either not available during the summer months or offered only at select school locations making it challenging if not impossible for many families in need to access. With that said, it is important for us to remember to make donations to local community food banks on a routine basis because countless families often turn to these institutions to help feed their families particularly in these very difficult economic times. Approximately, one in four children in America is food insecure. As is aptly stated in the materials by Share Our Strength, their bodies may not be rail thin, nor their bellies bloated like their counterparts in other countries, but they’re at risk of hunger all the same. They lack the energy to learn, grow, and thrive.• It is a well known fact that proper nutrition is vital to the growth and development of healthy children.
Statistics on Childhood Hunger in the United States: According to the USDA, over 17 million children lived in food insecure (low food security and very low food security) households in 2009. ii 20% or more of the child population in 16 states and D.C. are living in food insecure households. The states of Arkansas (24.4 percent) and Texas (24.3 percent) have the highest rates of children in households without consistent access to food. (Cook, John Child Food Insecurity in the United States: 2006-2008. In 2009, households that had higher rates of food insecurity than the national average included households with children (21.3 percent), especially households with children headed by single women (36.6 percent) or single men (27.8 percent), Black non-Hispanic households (24.9 percent) and Hispanic households (26.9 percent). These heartbreaking facts about the prevalence and the face of hunger in America have drawn the attention of many people including but not limited to Oscar winning actor, Jeff Bridges. Jeff Bridges is serving as the national spokesperson for the No Kid Hungry Campaign•. To ensure that every child has the opportunity to achieve success, we must first ensure that their most basic needs are met. By: Karen Tack Ingredients: 1 (8-inch) round cake 1 (9-inch) round cake 1 can plus 1 cup vanilla frosting Blue food coloring 4 plain breadsticks 22 to 24 sticks Doublemint gum (green chewing gum) Ÿ cup white chocolate chips 16 to 20 brown M&M's 1 green Jolly Rancher fruit chew 1 wheat stick (Pringles) 1 cup ground vanilla wafers What you'll need: A serving platter A bread knife Clean scissors Waxed paper A baking sheet Trimming the cake: Cut a 1 ½-inch-deep oval from the 9-inch cake (see template). Arrange the cakes on a serving platter as pictured. Place the remaining oval piece on top of the uncut 8-inch cake for the island. Frosting the cake: Empty 1 can of vanilla frosting into a bowl. Tint the frosting blue with the food coloring. Stir in the remaining 1 cup of white vanilla frosting to achieve the white and blue swirl effect. Spread the frosting on the top and sides of the cake to cover completely. Use the back of a spoon to make swirls and waves in the frosting. To complete the decoration: Cut the gum into long pointed ovals with clean scissors. Snip small diagonal cuts along the edge of the leaves (see diagram). Line a sheet pan with wax paper. Place the white chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl and microwave on high for about 30 seconds, pausing to stir every 10 seconds until smooth. Spread a thin layer of white chocolate on one side of each gum leaf. Curve leaves slightly into an arch, with the white chocolate on the inside of the curve. Place each gum leaf on the prepared baking sheet on its side, so the chocolate does not touch the wax paper. Refrigerate until set, about 5 minutes. Reheat the white chocolate in the microwave for 10-15 seconds if necessary. Dab the end of each breadstick with the melted white chocolate. Attach the firm leaves, about 5 to 6 leaves per breadstick, and lay the palm tree on the baking sheet. Refrigerate until set, about 5 minutes. Dab more white chocolate onto the palm tree where the leaves are attached to the breadstick. Press a few brown M&M's on for the trees' coconuts. Refrigerate again until set. Massage the green fruit chew into the shape of a bottle. Press a small piece of the wheat stick into the fruit chew for the cork. Press the bottle in the blue frosting for the floating bottle, as pictured. Sprinkle the vanilla wafer crumbs over the raised area of cake to form the island. Just before serving, insert the palm tree bread sticks into the island area of the cake. Place a few brown M&M's into the sand around the trees.

By: Jennifer Maughan n order to honor the important role that fathers play in a family's life, a special day was designated as Father's Day. Father's Day history began at the turn of the twentieth century, and the holiday developed into a full-fledged celebration with gifts and greeting cards. Sonora Dodd wished to have a day where she could honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children after his wife died in childbirth. Her father, William Smart, was a farmer who lived in rural Washington, and, as Sonora reached adulthood, she recognized what a sacrifice it was for her father to be a single parent and raise her and her siblings so well. She was inspired by the nationwide holiday that celebrated mothers and was determined that fathers should be recognized in a similar manner. In 1910, she and others celebrated the first informal Father's Day in Spokane, Washington, and the movement spread across the country quickly. President Calvin Coolidge promoted the idea of a national holiday to honor fathers. He, like many, agreed with the idea of a national Father's Day as a way to bring fathers and their children closer together and cement the bonds that exist between them. The holiday didn't become an official nationally recognized day until 1966, when President Lyndon Johnson declared that the third Sunday in June would be the official national Father's Day. Father's Day has emerged as a secular holiday that is celebrated in many countries all over the world. India, New Zealand, Germany, France, Australia, Argentina, Brazil and Norway are just a few of the nations who celebrate a Father's Day. In America, the day has evolved to include grandfathers, uncles, stepfathers and any man who acts as a father figure in a person's life.

Elton John has over a thousand pairs, Canadian singer Corey Hart only wears his at night, and you can tell the good guys from the bad guys in The Matrix by the shape of theirs. What am I talking about? Sunglasses, of course! There’s nothing quite as stylish as a pair of shades, so get out your aviators or your wayfarers and start celebrating Sunglasses Day! Although the origins of Sunglasses Day are unknown, the history of sunglasses stretches as far back as 14th century China, where judges used eyewear made of smoke-colored quartz to mask their emotions. Fast-forward 600 years and modern sunglasses as we know them today were first marketed by entrepreneur Sam Foster on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. One other thing to remember is that sunglasses also help protect your eyes from harmful UV light, so channel your inner-cool and slip on those shades on Sunglasses Day!
