From the day she was brought home from the hospital, Faith has been one of the most adventurous, imaginative, giddy, down to earth and dorky children I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. If she didn’t come in the house smelling like dirt, she didn’t have a good day! This girl’s soul is colorful and her personality is addictive. She pulls off graceful tomboy as if it wasn’t an oxymoron and at the same time manages to keep everyone giggling with her constant antics and messed up words. Spend a day with this little girl and you will feel young again, guaranteed. I am fortunate that I am not just her photographer, I am her Mommy and I get to spend a lifetime with her.

10K Words Photography by Rachelle I'm Rachelle. Those who know me think I'm a bit photo-obsessed. And, they're probably right. I've had a love affair with photography for most of my life. My first camera was a yellow and purple "Le Clic" - the kind that took 110 film. I'm not sure if we ever actually developed a single roll of the pictures I shot, and it's pretty hard to conjure up an idea of what the pre-elementary child that was me was "into" photographing. In high school, I was gifted a 35mm point and shoot by my grandparents. It was stolen after one of my performances in my very first play at the school. [Insert heartbroken teen here.] While I had several point and shoot cameras since then (and used the timer to execute many a "selfie" before they were called that), it wasn't until college that I got serious. I borrowed the next camera from Poppy (my granddad) to take a fine art photography course. It was a 35mm Minolta SLR and he'd equipped it with a dial light meter (in leather case!) and several lenses. I couldn't believe he'd entrusted me with his camera, and realized while developing my images in the university dark room that this interest of mine might be something more.
I went on to study photojournalism at U.C. Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism under the mentorship of Ken Light and Mimi Chakarova. Working with the Oakland Zoo's public relations department, I was granted special permission to shadow the many employees and their animal charges. I determined then that my resulting still photo documentary, "Captive," would tell a new story about the zoo. I received the school's Susan Meiselas Award for Photojournalism in 2002. That same year, I welcomed my firstborn into the world and my whole life changed. I couldn't believe how fast she was growing and changing. Pictures - now shot digitally - became even more important. I wanted to remember everything, and so I froze time with my camera. Yes, I was the mother at the park who forgot the diaper bag, but remembered the camera bag. Play dates were lifestyle photo shoots with friends. This past year, I brought my five kids into the boutique modeling world. My daughter, LauraChioma (aka La'Chi), has dreamed of being a model for as long as I can remember. It's been a blessing to make this interest of hers come to life, while being able to do what I truly love - take pictures. My husband, Rob, helps scout locations, accessorize shoots, and provides constant support. I'm always surprised when someone loves our photographs and when the kids are featured in publications. I feel immensely blessed to have received recognition for this family project of ours. Continued
On the evolution of a photography business 10k Words Photography by Rachelle is a part time endeavor that I hope will one day be a full time pursuit. 10k - short for ten thousand - plays off of the advertising adage "A picture is worth one thousand words." At 10k Words Photography by Rachelle, the philosophy is that "A picture can say so much more!" It may seem a bit cheesy, but my childhood home has countless albums of photographs of everything from first cars to sporting events to military field equipment. Of course, there are also family photos in abundance. These are the records of our history - and they are treasured memories each one. I'd like to think I shoot my clients with the same love and attention I have for capturing my own family's images. When words fail, when memories fade, it's the pictures that can speak volumes about who we are, what we loved, and how we lived. As a mom, I've had several unfortunate experiences with family photo sessions that were rushed. I'd spent time planning out outfits, grooming my kids, and traveling to a studio, only to be presented with six quick shots they called "portraits." Few captured the family I loved as I pictured us. Not perfect - but full of personality. And if I wanted to take them all home? The cost was a great investment. I keep these experiences in the forefront of my memory when I speak to potential clients. My training blends together into an environmental photographic style that creates portraits capturing the impromptu moments of life as well as the personalities of my subjects. My goal with every click is to capture the special little nuances of each person. I shoot on location - both indoor and outdoor. Sessions can be as short as thirty minutes, but I try not to rush my clients - especially the kids (because our little games can sometimes take a while). And sometimes, La'Chi will join me as a lighting and posing assistant or as an extra playmate. 10k Words Photography also works with the Gold Hope Project, offering free sessions to child cancer fighters and survivors (and their families).

Hi! My name is Kathy, and I have been on one side or the other, of the camera, as long as I can remember! I started out as a model back in the early 1970's doing runway, TV and print modeling. This was long before Photo Shop!!! As I went from model to mommy, the transition to photography came quite natural to me. After a few classes in F stops and shutter speeds, I was on my way.....and yes...I used FILM!! With my active children, I always had a subject to practice on. Then, along came digital!! Although the technology has changed, the basics of lighting, angles and composition has stayed the same! I am now working on building my own business and with my modeling experience, I have lots of tips and tricks to share with my clients. I prefer to shoot in my studio, but since I live in the Ft. Lauderdale area, beach sessions are also very popular! Check out my web site at http://photosbykathy.smugmug.com/
