BIOGRAPHY Jan Bigas is a native of Puerto Rico. Since 2014, Jan has been an Architect in Training for over a year and has been responsible for a multiplicity of projects across various offices. His work ethic and focus on visual representation has led him to a number of professional opportunities and academic awards -Deans List, Honor Student, GSEA Finalist-. Jan received his 5 year Bachelor of Architecture at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico. When beginning a project, Jan’s work process begins with a thorough understanding of the clients specific design challenges by conducting extensive research on all of the clients concerns and ideas. Jan strives to fully understand a topic before beginning the design process. His work is user-centered, keeping in mind his client’s needs, likes, lifestyle and living conditions; while also factoring in local conditions.

The Rayleigh-Taylor Instability is one of fluid dynamics most fundamental principals. It occurs when two planes of parallel immiscible fluids lose their state of equilibrium, and the heavier fluid begins to fall. During the course of falling, the liquids go through various states, evolving into a beautiful furor. Much like the studied principal, this investigation provided a wealth of forms and products initially unimaginable. The result was an extensive and varied morphological study that spanned across diagrams, architecture and sunglass design. Yes, sunglasses, not a typo.

FROM STUDY TO FUNCTION The frame and the lenses were made out of very contrasting materials, to convey heavyness and lightness. Later these were subjected to the same conditions established in the diagrammatic study, which produced an intertwined aesthetic.

A LACK OF GREEN SPACE Puerto Rico is an island known for its beaches, jungles and people. A place renowned for its lucious vegetation. However, Puerto Rico’s cities are surprisingly sparce of green insfrastructure. Which applies especially to the city of Ponce, where less than 20% of its sprawl consists of vegetation. Initially required to propose a skyscraper, the surrounding residential areas would suggest the exploration of different options to reduce the monumentality of the structure. The program was divided into two volumes juxtaposed onto the site. To reduce the building footprint, one of the volume was elevated to preserve the sites natural ecology. Focusing around the natural foilage on-site, the interention aspired to acheive a balance between constructed and organic structures. The building occupies less than 20% of the total site area, the rest would be designed as a urban park for the city. The existing flora would also create a natural buffer, helping the project contextualize further.

I WANT SUGAR The Matilde is a testament to the sugar cane industry of Puerto Rico. A historic factory structure found in the outskirts of the city of Ponce. Considered one of the principal manufacturers of sugar in the south of PR in the 1800’s.
FIELD Sugar cane is grown in large patches of land. Users begin their journey through a sugar cane field.
The Matilde has stood the test of time, in order to tell the story of sugar. The project utilizes the processes of sugar cane refining to create architectural borders, experiences and form. From exploring the sugar cane fields to the crushing of the cane; every element is an ode to one of Puerto Rico’s finest times in history. PRESERVATION The historic factory is intended to be preserved and renovated.

GUIDED BY SUGAR Sugar cane is utilized as a wayfinding element and architectural form. The user traverses a sugar cane field and arrives at an open camping plaza that serves as a datum to other programs.

AN AGRICULTURAL CRISIS More than half the island of Puerto Rico is composed of excellent terrain for agriculture. 2 million residents depended on local produce in the 1950’s. However, between 2002-2007, more than 1,914 farms closed down. Unsurprising when less than .5% of Puerto Ricos economy is based on cultivation. In contrast, tourism is flourishing. Receiving 3.6 million visitors a year, that generate a gross revenue of upwards of 3 million dollars. Theres incredible potential for agrotourism in Puerto Rico, a fairly recent modality that has been adopted by countries worldwide. Today, 15% of the islands farms are located around the infamous ‘Ruta 123’; which passes through the municipalities of: Ponce, Adjuntas and Castañer. Agri-Mass is part of a collective of projects conceptualized around the route. It adressed the islands dying agriculture by creating a hub for agrotourism. Through comunnal markets, bus stations, ascending local gardens, tourist attractions and tourist centers; locals and visitors participate in an active process based around exploration, local patrimony and cultivation.

A CIRCULATORY PROBLEM Route 123 is part of an old Puertorican roadway thats incredibly difficult to traverse without local knowdlege. Understanding vehicular and tourist activity within the area was important to determine viable solutions. Narrowing roads, lack of signage and unconnected commercial spaces, created a filter that limited any tourism potential.

TURNING THE TIDE These limitations were addressed to cause an inverse effect, the project would act as an injection of tourism into Route 123. By offering different methods of transportation -bus, bicycling, guided tours, cable cars-, clearly defined paths, detailed touristic experiences, and better integration of local businesses.

A VIEW LIKE NO OTHER Situated on the highest peak in the area, the Tourist Center overlooks the beautiful Route 123 mountain range. The hill on which it rests is adapted for a series of vertical gardens, and offers multiple methods of communication between the Main Terminal and the Tourist Center.

A SEED OF HOPE The ascending gardens are intended to be run and maintined by local impoverished communities. Participants are offered training, supplies and market space. Most of the produce would be sold to tourist and local supermarkets.

REVOLUTION
The thesis identified the relevance and stigma of factory spaces in the contemporary city and their connection to domestic architecture; with the intent of supplying new strategies of integration between both typologies to successfully generate a new typology focused around the ‘maker’ movement. It touched from socio-cultural, economic, political to architectural aspects while drawing comparisons with the contemporary home. Research found that evidently there was a strong connection between both -seemingly different- architecture typologies. The study culminated on a super-community where fabrication and residency coexisted. An adaptive architectural system was devised for abandoned or unused industrial buildings. After repurposing, these structures could accomodate public fabrication laboratories, material libraries and urban plazas; while a secondary super-structure could potentially multiply the sites square footage by adding modular residential apartments that also sport personal fabrication laboratories. The sum of these elements offer a unique perspective on the architectural potential of the third industrial revolution.

A TRUE INTERSECTION The investigation establishes a clear relationship between both, domestic and industrial, typologies; dating back to the XVI Century. Furthermore, the study suggests that both, the factory and the home, are reactive structures that reshape themselves based around the technological systems they house.

OUT OF THE SHOP AND INTO THE HOME In order to create a new understanding of industrial architecture, the home - the most dynamic architectural typology - is utilized as a catalyst to redefine the contemporary “in-home� workspace. Industrial spaces that can safely co-exist with the home; while providing industry tools in a day-to-day context.

RECLAIM & REPURPOSE In New York’s urban fabric, there exists a multiplicity of abandoned or un-used industrial buildings. Most of these structures can be found on the outskirts of the island, with a few exceptions in SOHO. Some of these buildings occur on the fringe between industrial and residential zones. This criteria helps determine key properties for intervention.

A PERFECT SITUATION The ideal site was found in the Clinton District on the corner of 11th Ave and 51st Street. Previously a car garage, the building presented all the neccesary conditions for a strategic intervention.

MORE THAN A SHELL The existing building while house a large scale fabrication laboratory, a material library and an event plaza. A PLACE FOR MAKING Poised to be one of the biggest publicly accesible fabrication labs in New York City, it counts with 3 floors dedicated to the art of making. Through memberships, customers would have access to a variety of tools and workshops aimed at educating and fostering interest in the “maker movement”.

FAIRLY INTACT Preserving the buildings existing industrial aesthetic, the facades are mostly left intact; with the exception of the lower metal siding. These panels are re-apropriated as mechanical folding systems, designed to enclose the public plaza when hosting grand scale events like the popular “Maker Faire� held annually in New York City.
