Works from the Peter Norton Collection Los Angeles Exhibition

“The pre-sale exhibition will offer visitors an eye-opening survey of contemporary art, as well as a unique glimpse into the world of a fascinating and very prescient collector. The collection reflects major themes of art of the time, but also its place: Los Angeles, which became in the 1980s-90s a major focal point for artists working there like Charles Ray, as well as for galleries that promoted and supported not only American art but also international artists like Takashi Murakami. As a result, Los Angeles because an extraordinary source of creative energy - one that has continued to evolve and expand in the years since with support from major collectors like Peter Norton.” (Christie’s Press Release)

Amongst the contemporary art community, Peter Norton’s name is legendary. A very private person who made his fortune as an early computer software entrepreneur, he has not only assembled one of the most remarkable contemporary collections in America, but given much back to the art world. Although many of his works have been exhibited extensively in every major retrospective devoted to a given artist, remarkably there has never been a comprehensive catalogue on the Norton Collection. This sale and its related exhibitions, panel discussions and publications will be the first opportunity for many to view the range and exceptional vision of a collector who has always been ahead of the curve. The focus of Peter Norton’s collection is centered on artists who have challenged conventional thinking and traditional boundaries, and in the process transformed the way we view the world around us. The low-key proponent of a nascent art community in Los Angeles in the early 1990s, Norton was one of only a handful of collectors who supported the young artists living and working in the region, often buying pivotal works from an artist’s first show. His collection captures the zeitgeist of the era, responding to art that tackled issues of race, sexuality and gender head-on, embracing large scale installations and works in a rich variety of media. “If I was buying high-end art, my money would make little difference,” he stated. “But the same money, spent on the work of early-career artists, makes more of a difference. My collecting helps fertilize the rootstocks of creativity.”

Works from the Peter Norton Collection Los Angeles Exhibition Role:
Exhibition Designer Date:
November 2011 Location:
Milk Studios, Los Angeles, CA Size:
9,000 sq. ft.
As Exhibition Designer for the Los Angeles exhibition of Works from Peter Norton Collection, I oversaw the design and management of the project from conception to final strike. The exhibition required collaboration with cross-departmental teams and Regional offices across Christie's. The repurposed airplane hanger at Milk Studios was an apt setting to host over 30 works of contemporary art from Norton's private collection. The minimal design utilized the natural lighting and raw aesthetics of the space to highlight the variety of works on view. Temporary walls and plinths were constructed and organized to guide viewers through the open space. White walls provided a clean backdrop allowing viewers to discover the full breadth of Norton's visionary collecting perspective.

“Christie’s is honored to present the two-day sale of A Palladian Villa by Michael S. Smith taking place 23-24 April. Encompassing over 450 lots, the sale will include contemporary art, English furniture, Old Master paintings, Chinese works of art and antiquities from a remarkable private property designed by Michael S. Smith, one of the most venerated figures in interior design. The inspiration for the design was drawn directly from the architecture of the house, a Palladian villa overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This concept allowed Smith to create a home that was informed by classical sensibility but within a modern context, filled with extraordinary art and furnishings that span the past 500 years.” (Christie’s Press Release)

A Palladian Villa by Michael S. Smith Exhibition Role:
Exhibition Designer Date:
April 2013 Location:
Christie's Rockefeller, New York, NY Size:
10,000 sq. ft. As Exhibition Designer for A Palladian Villa by Michael S. Smith, I managed the design and installation for Christie's first single designer sale. The cross-departmental project required coordination with various Specialists and design teams. For the design and layout, I worked with Specialists to develop presentation strategies to translate a domestic setting into a gallery environment. The exhibition spanned five galleries at Christie's Rockefeller Saleroom, showcasing over 450 lots of fine art, furniture, and objects. Each room in the villa was meticulously recreated to give clients the experience of walking through the original space. The addition of custom wall paint, visuals, scents, and foliage further transformed the white-box galleries into a "lived-in" environment. The exhibition provided clients with a multi-sensory experience while honoring the essence of the original villa.

Kiehl's Since 1851 Store Design Role:
Freelance Store Designer Date:
2010-2011 Location:
various US locations
As a Freelance Store Designer for Kiehl’s Since 1851 Store Design and Development Team, I developed layouts and drawing packages for domestic wholesale, shop-in-shops, and free-standing programs. Following Kiehl’s fixture and design standards, layouts provided unencumbered circulation, maximum product visibility, and multiple opportunities for the customer to interact with both products and other people. Retailer specific design and fixture packages were prepared for distribution and construction. New fixture prototypes were developed using a palette of stainless steel, marble, and reclaimed woods to evoke the feeling of a modernized apothecary.

Role:
Senior Store Design Project Manager Date:
Fall 2009 Location:
Bloomingdale's 59th Street, New York, NY
As Senior Store Design Project Manager, I assisted with the design and development of Lancôme’s counter at Bloomingdale’s 59th Street. As a new flagship prototype, the design incorporated elements from Lancôme’s existing fixture vocabulary with new display and merchandising units. Referencing the brand philosophy of elegant beauty, black and white finishes provided a classic backdrop while defining areas for skincare and makeup. Scaled models and design packages were presented for executive review and approval. New fixtures incorporating multimedia technology were developed, tested, and refined.

211 Elizabeth Street Residences Role:
Project Manager, Interior Designer Date:
Spring 2006 Location:
211 Elizabeth Street, New York, NY Size:
33,000 sq. ft. As Project Manager and Interior Designer I oversaw the interior design and development for a new seven-story condominium in New York’s Nolita neighborhood. Balancing dual roles, I managed workflow and schedules and developed interior floor plans for 15 private residences. Working with the architect, I assisted with site surveying and initial core + shell schematics. As the project developed, I managed the design development of all kitchens and bathrooms. Layouts and millwork details followed classical proportions, while interior finishes remained traditional to complement the handcrafted brick facade. Kitchen cabinets detailed in Danish oilfinished walnut and framed in high gloss black paint evoked a sense of refined materiality, while Calacatta Gold marble bathrooms with patinated brass fixtures completed the "old-world" design.

Working with a design team to create a program for custom kitchens and baths. Created schematic designs and detail drawings for custom millwork. Interior finishes referenced the building's industrial past, including oil-rubbed walnut kitchen cabinets framed in blackened steel and bathroom walls and floors laid in handglazed and kiln-fired tiles exclusive to Artisan Lofts.

Accenture Atlanta Role:
FF&E Designer Date:
Spring 2003 Location:
Atlanta, GA Size:
34,000 sq.ft. For Accenture Atlanta, relocating to a new office space provided an opportunity to develop new workspace prototypes. As FF&E Designer, I assisted with all phases of the project from concept development through design and construction documentation. I was responsible for sourcing and creating all FF&E specifications. New furniture typologies were developed to anticipate alternate modes of working and collaboration. Floor and wall finishes defined private and public spaces and provided a means of wayfinding through the open space. By combining static workstations with modular furniture, end-users were encouraged to recreate and redefine spaces to suit their needs.
