So many things came together to inspire In the Kiva. I was contemplatively reading Ladder to the Light by Steven Charleston, an indigenous elder whose book contains meditations on hope and courage, using the image of climbing up the ladder in a traditional Pueblo and Hopi kiva. I had also just committed to creating an Earth series inspired by my playful Child in mud and dirt, coupled with my adult love, respect and concern for our land and soil. Then in a discussion with our small CST Creating as Contemplation group, it was an “ah hah” moment: I realized that The Seeker is one of my core archetypes. The Kiva and the new Earth series were seeking journeys for me. I had rejected The Seeker archetype previously because of its association with being a wanderer or nomad, which are not me. But I have sought spiritual pathways all of my life and continue to do so.
