Kyle Polzin, born on January 16, 1974, grew up in South Texas, and began developing his artistic skills at a young age under the guidance of his father. Brought up around horses and the Gulf coast, Kyle grew to appreciate the beauty and heritage of his Texas surroundings which is reflected in his art. He worked closely with his grandfathers who were both skilled carpenters, and through their teachings, learned the value of craftsmanship and the reward of creating with your hands.
In 1992 Kyle began his formal training in fine art at Victoria College with emphasis in oil painting. During this time, he participated in instructional sessions under Dalhart Windberg, whose work has influenced him since boyhood. After college Kyle worked as a graphic artist and web designer while painting in his free time. As his popularity and success as a painter grew, he switched to painting full time in 2000.
At this year’s 2022 Prix de West Show, Kyle Polzin was awarded the Prix de West Purchase Award. This is one of the most prestigious honors bestowed on a Western Artist. His painting Rough Passage now resides in the The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum’s permanent collection. Kyle has also received the Express Ranches Great American Cowboy Award at the 2013 Prix de West in Oklahoma City, and the Don B. Huntley Spirit of the West Award, given in recognition of the most outstanding work in cowboy subject matter for three years in a row at the Autry National Center’s Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale. He has had numerous sold out shows and his work has been featured in Art of the West, Southwest Art, Western Art Collector, Texas Outdoors Journal, and numerous other publications. He currently resides in Austin, Texas with his wife Leigh along with their two young daughters.

Warrior’s Dream x 38" Oil
I like looking at old ledger drawings, and the detailed images sketched on animal hides by warriors such as Sitting bull or Red Hawk. Guns, saddles, horses, and shields are most always present in these drawings. They give first-hand insight into that time in history, along with a sense of the individual who created them. A momentary glimpse into their imagination.

I found this great old pair of rodeo chaps from the seventies at a boot shop in Fredericksburg, Texas. They made me think back to when I was around 6 years old and I would help my grandpa work behind the chutes at our local rodeo arena. Sometimes, if I was really lucky, I could get the coordinator to give me a number to wear on the back of my shirt so I could pretend I was one of the contestants!

This past spring my daughter and I decided to try beekeeping. We’ve spent the summer learning together and helping our bees build up their colony. I decided to do this little painting to celebrate our first year as new beekeepers!

I usually light my subjects with a single light source coming into the scene from the side. For the first time in one of my paintings, I wanted to show where the light was coming from. I like how the cool light is spilling onto the flowers from the old window pain, and reflecting in the glass jar.

My grandfather was a tobacco salesman, and on weekends, I would help him unpack his supply shipments. Much like old whiskey bottles, I have always been fascinated by the intricate labels and revenue stamps that are affixed to the old wooden boxes and tins.
