PROJECT BRIEF We made a book cover for an upcoming book called “Culture Politics.” I applied a key element of the story in the cover. I wanted the cover to foreshadow the book. It was mysterious, which we interest any viewer. I put a burning fire to illustrate the burning of the regalia of the tribe. I kept a black background with hints of the color red. I wasn’t able to solve the typography problem in the title. I definitely believe this was a great assignment because we got to design for a different medium than I have ever delt with. PROJECT BRIEF

Paul Rand was born on August 15, 1914 in Brooklyn, New York, under his real name Peretz Rosenbaum. He first realized his passion for design when he made signs for his father’s grocery store and his school. Though he attended a couple of the best art schools in the area, he is still known to be a self-taught designer. By his early twenties, Paul was already becoming a force to be reckon with. Rand is mostly known for his corporate identities for companies such as ABC, Westinghouse, and especially IBM. He worked until his final year in 1996, when he died of cancer. Paul Rand still continues to inspire designers to this day. INSPIRATIONS

PROJECT BRIEF We were assigned to create a presentation and infographic for a specific designer. I had to research about Paul Rand. After that and looking at his at best works, I wanted to do something clean. I was really inspired by his last logo he created, which was for Servador. I decided to use it as a theme for both my presentation and infographic. I set the background as a black with CMYK type on it. It is something that carries over some of his traits. I focused on the entire Corporate time era for the presentation, but I focused more on Paul in the infographic. I think I had more of a modern take on him, and could not get his cut-out looking style. PROJECT BRIEF

Philly Artist: Dessie Jackson By Blair Monroe
I met Dessie Jackson outside of a party last month. Instead of waiting in line for the doors to open, we decided to head over to the bar next door to grab a beer and chat. We talked about mutual friends, our shared love for summer time in Philly, and Jackson briefly mentioned her artistic ability. Upon entering the party, I quickly realized how modest she had been about her skills. Through out the evening she was approached by multiple party goers, fans even, who praised her for her work. Jackson’s pieces have certainly been attracting attention. She has recently been featured in Complex and JUMP Magazine. She was commissioned to create the cover art for Gilbere Forte‘s single “Nolita”, and she was chosen to design a T-shirt for The Hundreds. I should also mention that Jackson is a full-time student at Tyler School of Art. To say that she’s got a full plate would certainly be an understatement. A few weeks after the party, I headed over to Jackson’s apartment to get a look at her creative space. The walls of her living room were adorned with large canvases filled with these evocative and striking images of women. As we kicked back, we spoke about her subjects, her musical inspiration, and the real life situations that evoke her artistic vision:

was born and raised. Ironically, I haven’t produced any work there
NYLON: What are the themes that you pursue in your creations? DJ: I’m intrigued with the “beautiful” with a slight quirkiness and sometimes darkness. I’d say that my work so far is a collection of contemporary subjects, beauty, and femininity rolled in one. In these themes, there are footprints and traces of fashion, music, and modern lifestyle and trends. I’m still exploring and I’m still trying to figure out what my work is saying. That’s the beauty of it, I don’t know if I’ll ever figure it out. NYLON: What music do you listen to while you work? DJ: I catch myself going through serious genre phases. Currently I can’t go wrong with Tiger’s Jaw, Whirr, and Frightened Rabbit. Lyrics are important. I find some of my pieces changing direction depending on what sound I surround myself with. However, you can always catch me listening to the corniest pop punk albums available if I’m laying down gesso or preparing any kind of surface. That is guaranteed.
since I moved out to go to school NYLON: What’s a real life situation that has inspired you? DJ: People inspire me more so then particular situations. People who work hard. Those that are pursuing what they want to do in life and what they enjoy in life- that inspires me to keep working. And I’m not really referring to any public leader or artist or celebrity, that isn’t as impressive as people who work hard for no publicity or no praise. Anything pure is inspiring. Once I went home to Lancaster’s First Friday and was walking with a few friends, we passed a group of younger girls and a friend heard my name… The girls walked past us a few steps, turned around and yelled, “We love your work!” That ruled. I still think of that. They are inspiring. That was an incredible feeling. NYLON: What super power do you want and why? DJ: I mean, who wouldn’t wanna fly? Or pull some “I Dream of Jeannie”
in Philadelphia. But it produces a peace of mind. The most inspirational places there are where I can’t see sidewalks, or tall buildings, or cigarette butts and wrappers. However, I need that grit that you can only find in cities. I love Philadelphia. To appreciate one is to appreciate the other. My other favorite fantastical place that I have never actually been to but need, need, need to go is to Japan. That is my dreamland. NYLON: What’s your goal professionally? DJ: To inspire- which might sound kind of cheesy but at the end of the wday if my work aids to some ones inspiration- art or not, I feel like that’s worth it. I want to play in all the fields that the art world offers and I want to play in the fields that it doesn’t. I don’t want my work to ever be defined or for myself to ever be branded into a specific box. I want to do it all.
trickery? Now, being able to physically survive and function without sleep. That is truly a super power I would love to have. Imagine all those hours free to do whatever you please or go wherever you wishguilt free with no time restraints whatsoever. I could make all the work and play with all the pugs and run around and dance at 4 am. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’d do this… but then you wont see me till

Pharrell Williams is the music producer with the midas touch; Cara Delevingne is fashion’s golden girl. When Vogue brings them together, the couple are utterly dazzling.
MOCK UP
PROJECT BRIEF This project was for us to design a magazine spread. I decided to redesign NYLON and turn it into the opposite it is now a little bit. I made it cleaner, especially the cover. The cover is usually very busy and very colorful. I made it black and white with just a touch of color to make it pop. I also decided to make it less focused on trends, but on new trends. One of the new trends is the instagram famous artist, Dessie Jackson. I wanted the spread to focus on her and her artwork. I designed it to be very minimal to do so. I did play with the positioning of the type to give it some movement. For the cover and featured article, I chose Cara Develingne. Her photos fit the look I wanted. I wanted to play with the typography, including in the title page to keep the magazine playful. PROJECT BRIEF
