The UK Royal Navy’s (RN’s) new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth is set to bring the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II on board for trials for the first time towards the end of next year.

Defeating the missile threat

RICHARD SCOTT Thales and Leonardo are being funded by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD)’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) to demonstrate the combined end-to-end performance of their respective Elix-IR infrared threat warning system (IRTWS) and Miysis Directed Infra-Red Counter Measures (DIRCM) system (pictured).

The Elix-IR IRTWS is a new generation multifunction passive threat warning system offering the core functionalities of a simultaneous missile approach warner and hostile fire indicator solution to counter existing and future missile threats. Use of the infrared spectrum − rather than the ultraviolet wavelength used in most existing missile threat warning systems − allows for longer range performance and increased warning times, according to Thales.

Leonardo and Thales have been working on lab-based integration of the Miysis and Elix-IR systems since the spring of this year. The demonstration trials, to be conducted on a range in Sweden in early 2018, will see the two systems hosted on a Terma Universal DIRCM pod.

Flight trials countdown continued from page 1 FOCFT test points are intended to define the safe envelope for the operation of the F-35B from Queen Elizabeth and sister ship HMS Prince of Wales. Test planning for FOCFT is already well underway using BAE System’s F-35B/QEC integration facility at Warton.

As well as ski-jump launches and vertical landings, it is expected that next year’s trials will include the first executions of a new manoeuvre known as a shipborne rolling vertical landing (SRVL). An SRVL exploits the ability of the short takeoff vertical landing F-35B to use vectored thrust to slow the speed of the aircraft approach to about 35kt of closure relative to the carrier while still gaining the benefit of wingborne lift. The primary benefit of an SRVL is a significant increase in payload ‘bring back’ compared with a ‘standard’ vertical landing.

Queen Elizabeth is currently alongside in Portsmouth following arrival at her base port on 16 August. The ship is expected to resume trials in October, with handover to the RN before the end of the year. Q

Ajax training solutions Lockheed Martin UK is showcasing innovative training solutions for the British Army’s Ajax armoured vehicle programme at this year’s DSEI. The company recently passed its critical design review for the new systems, locking down the design with prime contractor General Dynamics Land Systems-UK. The solutions will allow crews to become familiar with the controls, weapon systems and operation of the Ajax turret as they progress from a classroom environment through to live vehicle exercises.

Lockheed Martin UK was awarded a $1 billion contract

by General Dynamics Land Systems-UK to design, manufacture and test 245 turrets for Ajax in October 2014.

The training element of the contract requires delivery of a suite of systems, courseware material and manuals to provide progressive training to the military operators and maintainers of the turret.

The training cycle starts with a desktop trainer (DTT), which provides a set of classroombased configurable PC

equipment that can be used by up to 12 students. Next is the small arms drill trainer, a highfidelity weapon trainer for up to six students. It allows training of the drills and maintenance procedures for the operation of the turret-mounted CT40 cannon and ammunition handling system, and the chain gun and its ammunition feed.

The crew turret trainer (CTT) takes up to six students and is a highly accurate physical representation of turret internal functional architecture. It can also connect with up to

three more CTTs for troop training. The final system is the appended trainer, which connects up to four Ajax vehicles to allow them to interact within a shared virtual environment.

The DTT is being shown at the Lockheed Martin stand (S8-210) and the CTT is on the General Dynamics Land Systems-UK stand (S9-210).

The first training solutions are on track to be delivered into General Dynamics Land Systems-UK by Lockheed Martin by the end of this year. Q

It demonstrated an ability to detect a range of targets in mission scenarios in mountainous terrain that reflects the radar shadow. New system architecture for mobile deployment allowed for the establishment of a real-time network consisting of several devices separated from each other, which proved the capability of the radar to operate in an area with a low concentration of transmitters.

A passive radar processes signal echoes from third-party transmitters, which are up to 10 billion times weaker than the original signals. Several interconnected passive radar sites can compensate for a lack of commercial transmitters by fusing data from three or more passive radar systems.

Canada adds Hammerheads DAVID DONALD QinetiQ Target Systems has received an order from the Canadian Department of National Defence for more than 40 Hammerhead unmanned surface vehicle targets with various payloads. The order is part of a five-year framework contract awarded in May 2016 to provide surface and aerial targets. The new order takes the Hammerhead order book up to 425, making it the most popular USV target in production. It is made in Canada in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

QinetiQ (Stand S2-550) is displaying a full-scale replica of Hammerhead at DSEI. The USV is a 5m vessel powered

by a 135hp 3-litre MerCruiser engine that gives it a top speed of 35kt in Sea State 3, and more in calmer waters. It has an endurance of 5 hours at 30kt, or up to 12 hours at 10kt.

Hammerhead was designed specifically to represent the fast inshore attack craft (FIAC) threat, and can be used in swarms of up to 40 vessels using a range of tactics, including crossing and zig-zag patterns. It can be fitted with visual, laser and radar signature enhancements that permit it to mimic a range of threats.

As well as FIAC threats, it can simulate fast attack craft and close-quarter threats, and has been used as a target for a wide range of weapon systems.

Kelvin Hughes (Stand S4-110) has been awarded a contract by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to supply the Integrated Navigation Bridge System (INBS) for the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) Maritime Sustainment Capability (MSC) vessel.

The INBS system meets the requirements of IMO Lloyd’s Register Class Notation IBS and Naval Ship Code. It includes a dual redundant data distribution system and fully integrated multifunction displays, and Kelvin Hughes’

ASW mission operated remotely from London Elbit Systemsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Seagull multimission unmanned surface vessel (USV) system has performed a remotely operated antisubmarine warfare (ASW) mission off Israel under the control of operators at DSEI. Using a satellite link, the Seagull platform, sailing in Haifa Bay, performed the operational ASW mission using control consoles situated some 3,515km away on Elbit Systemsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; stand S2-320.

Operating an L3 HELRAS dipping sonar and Elbit Systemsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; proprietary software, Seagull performed real-time

detections and classification of objects, demonstrating capability to deter and dissuade hostile subsurface activity.

The Seagull team included two operators, a USV operator and sonar operator.

Seagull is a 12m long USV that can be operated from a mothership or shore stations.

It provides multimission capabilities, including ASW, mine countermeasures, electronic warfare, maritime security and underwater commercial missions. It has a mission endurance of more than four days.

Fox features SHAUN CONNORS Shown for the first time at a defence exhibition by Jankel (Stand N6-370) is latest Fox Rapid Reaction Vehicle-x (RRV-x). This is a modified Toyota Hilux-based platform, and is entering production for the Belgian Ministry of Defence, which is the first customer for this latest variant.

The Hilux-based RRV-x retains the proven OEM base chassis reliability alongside Jankel upgrades specific to user mobility and operational requirements. Upgrades include brakes, suspension, steering, electrical systems,

environmental protection, engine management system and frame as required. The design ethos remains that while fully militarised (in accordance with military standards), both structurally and automotively the RRV-x benefits wherever possible from the extensive durability trials conducted

during development by the OEM over eight generations of Hilux.

The entire composite body of the RRV-x is Jankel-designed, the primary design aim being to maximise payload, mobility and stowage space as well as providing CH-47 Chinook (both standard and narrow 1.8m) air transportability. A purpose designed composite â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;podâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; re-profiles the internal envelope of the vehicle to maximise user space and ergonomics.

The removable armoured side panels/doors and floor can be fitted/removed by a team of two in under four hours. The rollover protection structure is equipped with a ring-mount; main armament options include light or heavy machine guns (MGs), or a 40mm automatic grenade launcher (AGL). A front

swing-arm mount can mount a 7.62mm light MG. The rear cargo area is developed to maximise space for equipment fits such as communications and Spike missiles, as well as being able to accommodate a standard NATO pallet. The modular selfrecovery winch can be fixed to the front or rear of the vehicle to maximise off-road capability and performance. The rear body is also configurable for a medevac role and can accommodate one or two stretchers.

It has just been announced that Swedish truck manufacturer Scania (Stand N2-220) was awarded a contract by the Dutch Ministry of Defence Materiel Organisation for more than 2,000 Scania trucks, writes Sam J Basch. According to reports, the contract also includes a 10-year service agreement, with an extension option.

This order, for 2,037 newgeneration Scania trucks of varying sizes for different parts

of the Dutch armed forces, is the largest-ever for the Swedish group. The vehicles will be built

by Scaniaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s large manufacturing plant in Zwolle in the Netherlands. First units are likely to be phased in from late 2018 onwards, with deliveries to continue until 2022.

The first vehicles will be used for driver training, with Scania Driver Services working closely with the Dutch defence forces to train instructors.

Technology upgrade gives Leopard sharper teeth CHRISTOPHER F FOSS Rheinmetall Defence (Stand S7-110) has brought its latest Leopard 2 upgrade package to DSEI. Previously known as MBT Revolution, it is now called the Advanced Technology Demonstrator (ATD). The ATD (pictured) brings together Rheinmetall extensive experience in tank technology, especially in the areas of firepower (gun, ammunition and fire control) and survivability.

The vehicle shown at DSEI has a host of improvements, including additional armour protection, hard kill defensive aids system, banks of Rosy electrically operated grenade launchers, all-electric gun control equipment, and cameras for situational awareness.

It also features a recently developed remote weapon station, which has a commanderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sighting system that includes day/thermal cameras and a laser rangefinder allowing for hunter/killer target

engagements to take place.

The ATD retains the 120mm L44 smoothbore gun, but this could be replaced by a 120mm L55, which would enable targets to be engaged at longer ranges when firing armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabottype ammunition.

Rheinmetall has completed deliveries of a package of upgraded Leopard 2 MBTs and Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles to Indonesia and is now working on a Polish Leopard 2 upgrade programme that also includes local industry participation.

The German company was one of two contractors awarded contracts by the Defence Equipment & Support organisation for the assessment phase (AP) of the British Army Challenger 2 Life Extension Programme. The other contractor awarded an AP contract was BAE Systems

Land (UK), with this due to be completed in late 2018.

For planning purposes, 227 Challenger 2 were expected to be upgraded, with each of the three regiments having 58 vehicles, and the remaining vehicles being used for training.

Under the latest changes to the British Army force structure only two regiments will be equipped with Challenger 2, so there could well be a reduction in numbers.

The AP will be replacing obsolete subsystems such as electronics and optronics, but the 120mm L30 rifled tank gun will be retained, although this could be replaced by a 120mm smoothbore gun, firing the latest generation of Rheinmetall ammunition.

Rheinmetall Defence is pulling through some of its technology from its private venture ATD into the Q Challenger 2 LEP.

Free-roaming Bronco CHRISTOPHER F FOSS ST Kinetics (Stand N9-350) has brought its latest Bronco 3 all-terrain articulated carrier (ATTC) to DSEI for its first showing outside of Singapore.

This is suitable for a wide range of battlefield missions and is being exhibited with the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 120mm Super Rapid Advanced Mortar System at the rear and a Green Rocket tactical counter-rocket and mortar radar mounted on the roof.

It pulls through ST Kineticsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; experience in the design, development and production of the original Bronco deployed by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) (now referred to as Bronco 1) and the heavier Warthog (now referred to as Bronco 2), developed to meet a UK urgent operational requirement for rapid deployment to Afghanistan.

Bronco 3 is powered by an MTU diesel developing 325hp, coupled to an Allison six-speed automatic transmission, with

rubber band tracks fitted as standard. Like the original version, Bronco 3 is fully amphibious, being propelled in the water by its tracks at a maximum speed of 5km/h.

The front and rear units have been redesigned and feature a blast-deflecting V-shaped hull, which is suspended from a redesigned and stiffened chassis by four rubber isolators.

It is fitted with cameras to give 360° situational awareness, while a 450A alternator is fitted to meet user requirements for increased power.

When being used as a troop carrier, the Bronco 3 ATTC can carry four people in the front unit and eight in the rear unit. All crew members have blast-attenuating seats provided by ST Kinetics.

The two units have a total volume of 11m3, which is a 30 per cent increase over the original. In addition to being used as a troop carrier, the rear module can be changed in less than 30 minutes to enable it to be rapidly reroled for different mission Q requirements.

The Combo hood protects individuals from the effects of carbon monoxide and chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear (CBRN) substances, and has proven its worth in the most demanding theatres of war in Syria and Iraq over the past three years. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The psychological impact of chemical weapon use cannot be overstated,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; said Hamish de Bretton-Gordon,

managing director of CBRN at Avon Protection. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The common cry of people in Syria and Iraq is â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;we can hide from bombs and bullets but

Cutting through the noise Esterline (Stand S3-320) is demonstrating its latest Racal Acoustics RA4000 Magna digital headset. Developed by the company’s Harrow-based Control and Communication Systems business over the past 12 months, the new headset addresses operator requirements for hearing protection in high-noise environments up to 120dB. ‘‘We have specifically developed the RA4000 headset for high-noise environments such as those encountered in tanks and tracked vehicles,’’ said Dick Heinrich, managing director of Esterline Control and Communication Systems. ‘‘It is addressing a segment of the market that has traditionally relied upon older analogue technologies. ‘‘What is new about Magna is that it is a digital system, so the majority of functionality can be tweaked or tuned through software,’’ he added. ‘‘This means we can change the response of the headset to match different acoustic environments.’’

The RA4000 Magna headset provides comprehensive hearing protection for highnoise environments with an autonomous, battery-powered digital active noise reduction system. This improves attenuation performance at low frequencies, providing better protection even when untethered from a communication system.

Electronic compression circuitry presents local environment sounds to the wearer at safe levels, so they are more aware of hazards and risks and can have face-to-face conversations without defeating the hearing protection. Output is electronically compressed so that it does not exceed an 85dB(A) safety level.

Recognise faces Digital Barriers (Stand S8-124) is showcasing its live facial recognition technology.

SmartVis Face is a nonconformant, live-streaming, facial recognition capability that can be used with standard cameras and hardware, including CCTV, police body-worn cameras and smartphones. It picks out faces from a crowd and matches them against terror watch lists and missing person databases.

ThruVis technology has been utilised for UK events in the months following Mayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s terrorist attack in Manchester. This is a sensitive camera able to screen some 1,000 people an hour, and in testing proved flawless when identifying individuals wearing bomb vests or concealing weapons, Digital Barriers says. EdgeVis, meanwhile, can stream secure, real-time video using 60 per cent less bandwidth.

This makes live streaming technically and financially viable, and is an improvement on body-worn cameras that only record data collected and do not stream it.

AREXIS airborne attack RICHARD SCOTT Saab (Stand N2-230) has unveiled details of a future fast jet airborne electronic attack (AEA) capability concept combining a high-power escort jamming pod, long-range air-launched decoys, and advanced electronic warfare (EW) operator control and fusion techniques.

Forming part of an internal studies package intended to identify technologies and inform investment decisions for a nextgeneration combat air capability, the future EW concept â&#x2C6;&#x2019; given the umbrella name AREXIS â&#x2C6;&#x2019; has already been briefed to the Swedish Air Force, the Defence Materiel Administration and the Defence Research Agency.

Saab sees the concept as being applicable to the existing JAS 39 Gripen line as well as future manned platforms.

Saab in 2013 began its in-house study to characterise the future air operating environment so as to inform key requirements and technologies for combat aircraft in the 2035-2040 period. One key

conclusion was the requirement for a credible AEA capability, supporting suppression of enemy air defences/destruction of enemy air defences, to improve aircraft survivability and enable penetration of sophisticated air defences.

Central to Saabâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thinking is the development of a selfcontained (in cooling and power) electronic attack (EA) pod suitable for two-seat variants of the JAS 39 Gripen or other twin-crew fighter aircraft. EA pod concept studies and design, including the build of engineering mock-ups, have been founded on the reuse of technology building blocks previously developed for the Gripen Eâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s internal self-protection EW suite. The pod design developed by Saab incorporates VHF and UHF antennas in fin surfaces, with L-band and S-band active electronically scanned array antennas, based

on gallium nitride technology, fitted front and rear.

The second element of the triad is a miniature airlaunched decoy to perform both distraction and stand-in jamming. Saab has conceptualised a small, longrange, long-endurance decoy vehicle with an EW payload that can locate and identify threats and targets, and distract enemy air defence resources. The decoy will support an attack on a target defended by surfaceto-air missile systems by acting as a stand-in jammer.

The third piece of the new concept is the development of a back-seat electronic warfare officer (EWO) station embodying advanced sensor data fusion and decision support techniques.

Saab has already prototyped the EWO human machine interface in the simulator, and has shown it to the Swedish Air Force.

CHRISTOPHER F FOSS General Dynamics (Stand S9-210) is displaying a Piranha 5 (8x8) armoured personnel carrier (APC) as a potential candidate for the British Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) programme. This is being shown fitted with a Kongsberg Protector remote weapon system (RWS) armed with a .50 M2 HB machine gun.

of interoperability trials. The exercise explored the ability of linking various facilities around the UK into a common synthetic environment, as well as live assets, so that the F-35â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interoperability with other UK platforms can be assessed and refined.

In the scenario, the F-35 pilots â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;flewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; from desktop simulators at the BAE Systems Samlesbury site, including the use of helmetmounted displays. A Joint Terminal Air Controller (JTAC) issued a request for close air support, which was passed to a simulated Air Support Operations Centre (ASOC) and then relayed to a Royal Navy Sea King Mk 7. The F-35s communicated with the JTAC via the aircraftâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s variable message

format (VMF) datalink to conduct digitially aided close air support (DACAS). For several of the pilots it was the first time they had used the VMF link.

Further trials will continue to progress F-35 interoperability, not just within the UK forces but with F-35 partner nations.

The aim is to iron out any issues prior to initial operating capability (IOC), and to establish an interoperability baseline with common tactics, techniques and procedures.

BAE Systems has invested heavily in the Samlesbury simulation facility, which has a new mission control room, a planning room for aircrew and operations support staff, a briefing/observation room, and a video conference service for post-mission debriefing.

The facility was created in 1886 as a firing range to support the Bofors factory in Karlskoga, and today has evolved into a multifaceted establishment that can literally put products â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;through hellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; to establish their limits and rigorously check that they comply with requirements and regulations.

Located in the forests of central Sweden, the core business of the centre is the testing of weapon systems, and it has six permanent test sites. Firing to a range of 25km is available within the confines of the range itself, but by using external facilities, ranges of

Taking weapons to the limit

The centre has on-site charge detonation capabilities of up to five tonnes. Radar, optical tracking and telemetry systems are available, as well as high-

speed video, X-ray, sounding station and other recorders.

Environmental testing can be carried out to test products in a wealth of environmental extremes, and the centre is equipped to fully test the resistance of insensitive munitions to fire and impact, as well their resistance to sympathetic reactions.

With its extensive 200km2 range, with restricted airspace up to 30,000ft, the Bofors site offers a cost-efficient test site for small and medium UAVs, with tracking and recording systems in place, and the ability to provide helicopters for tracking and for transport/ recovery.

As well as the testing of new products, the Bofors Test Center assists with lifetime extension decisions by assessing equipment and ammunition as it nears the end of its service life. An accurate assessment may allow the life of the asset to be extended safely. If, however, ammunition has reached the end of its life, the centre has facilities to handle destruction and demilitarisation.

Several methods for safe explosives disposal are available, drawing on the siteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legacy of more than 120 years of handling explosives and Q ammunition.

Dutch company GXS Gap Crossing Systems (Stand S6-272) has just introduced an innovative assault bridge system for infantry and light vehicles.

Designed to fill the gap beneath heavy bridging equipment used by most forces, the manportable GXS system is lightweight, compact and deployable in less than 10 minutes. It can carry vehicles up to 5.6 tonnes in weight. This allows motorised infantry to maintain speed and achieve the element of surprise by covering terrain without undue delay.

According to the GXS team, the launch of the system created immediate interest

Training for real UK-based MS Instruments (Stand N6-195) this week announced the acquisition of the marketing rights to a close quarter battle (CQB) training system known as Partition Panel Systems.

The modular system, designed by Barrie Pegrum, enables specialist military and police forces to undertake CQB training in rooms and corridors, and rapidly reconfigure them to keep training fresh.

Easily assembled by two people at a rate of one panel per minute, CQB scenarios can be built without the need for overhead rails or qualified crane or forklift drivers.

Japan shows AFV systems capability CHRISTOPHER F FOSS Mitsubishi Heavy industries (MHI) Integrated Defence & Space Systems (Stand S7-360) is presenting its total capability in the design, development and production of key subsystems for armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs). These include the diesel engine, automatic transmission and suspension systems.

Here at DSEI is an example of its latest hydropneumatic suspension system for heavy tracked AFVs. This has a maximum stroke of up to 40mm, and one of the options is for height control, which would allow the platform to be tilted

left or right, or up and down, to suit the tactical situation.

When compared to torsion bars, hydropneumatic suspension systems have a number of significant advantages, including saving space inside the hull and providing an improved ride across country for the crew,

as well as making for a more stable gun platform.

Mitsubishi is the prime contractor for a number of the latest-generation Japanese AFVs including the Type 10 main battle tank, the Type 11 armoured recovery vehicle, the Type 99 155mm selfpropelled artillery system, and the Type 16 Mobile Combat System.

The latter 8x8 highmobility AFV is one of the latest AFVs to enter service with Japan and is fitted with a turret armed with a 105mm gun. It is similar in appearance and battlefield mission to the Italian Centauro 105mm Mobile Gun System (MGS), which is also used by Jordan and Spain.

Multiple warhead penetrator DAVID DONALD Turkish armament specialist Makina ve Kimya Endustris Kurumu (MKEK, Stand N6-210) is showing its NEB multiplewarhead penetration bomb.

The weapon has been developed to match the form factor, weight distribution and ballistic characteristics of the NATO-standard Mk 84 2,000lb (907kg) general-purpose warhead, simplifying carriage by Western aircraft types. This also allows it to be fitted with the same precision-guidance kits as employed by the Mk 84, such as the JDAM and Turkish HGK GPS/ inertial kits, and the Paveway laser-guidance system.

Inside the outer shell, MKEK has devised a multi-warhead system that comprises an augmenting charge that clears soil overmatter before a shaped-charge detonates to punch a hole through concrete.

In the centre of the bomb is a follow-through warhead that flies through the hole before detonating inside the space

behind the concrete. The followthrough warhead has a tail in the fuze that can have variable programmed time delays.

This arrangement offers excellent concrete penetration capability even at low impact velocities and less-thanoptimal impact angles.

Penetration performance is 2.8m against 35MPa reinforced

27 concrete. While the bomb offers capability against underground facilities such as bunkers, command centres and ammunition storage, it is also effective against hardened aircraft shelters. Other target sets include runways, bridges and critical buildings.

The augmenting charge section has preformed fragments to give fragmentation effects against secondary surface area targets such as parked aircraft, radar sites and industrial facilities.

NEB has been qualified for use with the F-4E-2020 Phantom and F-16 aircraft that are operated by the Turkish air force. It is also being qualified for use with the F-15 Eagle, a process that is due to be completed this year.

DAVID DONALD On 10 July this year, the first Pilatus PC-21 destined for service with the French air force took to the air at the company’s Stans factory in Switzerland.

The first of 17 PC-21 turboprop trainers to equip the fighter training school at Cognac air base is expected to be delivered in March.

COMINT package to fly on Watchkeeper BETH STEVENSON The AS3 communications intelligence (COMINT) system of QinetiQ (Stands S2-550 and S2-341) is set to get airborne as a payload on Thales’s Watchkeeper UAV. Part of QinetiQ’s ASX family of COMINT solutions, AS3 is designed specifically for UAVs and small manned platforms.

It enables the operator to

detect signals from military communications devices and then locate, identify and listen to the individuals using them.

Fitted to Watchkeeper, AS3 is designed to increase the UAV’s sensor footprint and enable it to work with groundbased systems to locate military communications with greater precision. It allows the platform to undertake COMINT missions that would normally be carried out by larger, more strategic platforms, such as

multi-engine business jets.

AS3’s integration into the Watchkeeper UAV is the culmination of a jointly funded collaborative project between Thales and QinetiQ, with its roots in a contract placed by the Defence Science and Technology

The training system includes simulators from CAE and other ground-based systems.

Rockwell Collins was contracted last month to provide two

Spectraview visual display systems for the CAE simulators.

Unlike the British Military Flying Training System, being implemented by the Ascent team of Babcock and Lockheed Martin, in which the contractor supplies most of the instructors, the FOMEDEC programme will employ French air force instructors. An output

of about 50 aircrews is required annually. The aircraft will replace piston-engined Grob G 120 and SOCATA Epsilons in basic training tasks, and will also download some of the advanced training burden from the ageing Dassault Alpha Jet trainers, some of which are due to get an upgrade for extended service.

IN BRIEF Life bottled LifeSaver (Stand N6-290) has introduced a new version of its water filtration storage bottle. Building on the company’s 6k, the 2k water bottle includes the LifeSaver Scavenger Hose that is used as an in-line pump to allow for the fill of larger containers. The company’s bottles and jerry cans remove 99.99 per cent of viruses, bacteria and cysts, and once the filter is full, no more water can pass through, so it is failsafe, LifeSaver says.

Operational effectiveness Canada’s Ixtrom Group (Stand N3-621) has unveiled a modelling and simulation system, the IXVMS7 (Intelligence Visualization, Modelling and Simulation 7 System). The company says this allows commanders, operators and responders to improve their operational effectiveness through enhanced performance of drills, tactics, techniques and procedures. Operators can establish a common set of objectives, strategies, and a single incident plan.

Designed for the transportation of delicate systems such as communications equipment, Airship is 50 per cent lighter than other comparative offerings, and was developed in response to a market need for better and lighter protective cases.
