Necessity nurtured a vision-time mitted its fulfillment.

per

In the early part of 1950, it became apparent to the Toms River Board of Edu· cation that it could no longer receive those children from the sending districts of Island Heights, Seaside Heights, Sea side Park, Ocean Gate, Berkeley Town ship and Lacey Township, due to the unusually rapid expansion and develop ment in the Toms River area. These dis tricts had been sending their students to Toms River High School for a period of over fifty years, and were extremely fortunate in having the advantages of an ever-expanding educational program under the excellent supervision of Dr. Edgar M. Finck and Clyde W. Slocum.

,

When duly notified that their pupils could not be enrolled in Toms River High School (after a reasonable length of time), the Boards of Education from the six districts that now comprise the "Central Regional High School District of Ocean County" formed a committee of local board members as well as interested citizens to formulate plans for future edu cation of high school pupils as well as the seventh and eighth grade pupils. Many hours were devoted by this com mittee to procure all the necessary fea tures in the construction of a school which would ultimately assure an adequate general college course-a commercial course-industrial arts course; and to pro

v ide a curriculum adaptable to seventh and eighth grade p rogram. inclusion of the seventh and eighth grades in the plans eliminated the prob lem faced by the ma jority of the dis tricts to prov ide additional building facili ties for the increased enrollment in the elementary systems. On September 21, 1954, the voters of t he areas concerned authorized the for mation of a new school district to be know n as the Central Regional High School District of Ocean County, and the first Board of Education was appointed by the Ocean County Superintendent of Schools at that time - Carl M. Blair, from the members of the original committee. One of the first of the many steps to be taken by the newly appointed members was the acceptance of a tract of land known as the "Pinewald Golf Course" from Berkeley Township for the sum of $1.00 to be used solely for the school purposes . After much study and deliberation, plans p repared by Micklewright and Mountford, Architects, were finally approved, and the voters authorized a bond issue of $1,430,000 to finance the construction and equipment of the school. Ground was broken on September 16, 1955, and the dreams of those who had devoted their time and energy com menced to be a reality .

"They are endowed with that most priceless virtue-foresight." We, the Senior Class of 1957, in recognition of the many hours of their time and energy spent in making Central Regional High School a reality, are proud to dedicate this, our first yearbook, to the Board of Education of the Ocean County Central Regional High School District.

•

This yearbook is truly a historic volume. Preparing it and participating in all the pioneering experiences in establishing a new school are opportunities which do not come to many students. I hope you wi 'li look back with increasing satisfac足 tion upon your contributions to the good name and traditions of Central Regional. I am happy to offer th is word of thanks for your help in getting us started. It has been a pleasure to see the many instances of real service in connection with athletics, student activities, class work, and other areas of student life. The football season of '56 at C. R. H. S. was marked by many "firsts." Many of the boys had never before participated in football, many had never played together, and had to be taught new tactics and strategies by new coaches, who all had different approaches. Yet, in spite of these handicaps, the boys worked hard and the result was a spirited team that fought and won its way to the first Central Jersey Group I Championship to be won by a new school. Congratulations, Coaches Boyd, Macintosh, and Braun; Capta in Mickey Fiori; and each and every member on the squad .
