You will p robably turn

the

of sev足

eral times before your eyes come to rest on this

page,

and

no

doubt you will not ice the many new and different

features

which have been add足 ed to The Eagle th is year. First of al 'I, a definite theme is ca rried throughout the entire yearbook by use of a diary . Photography and artwork are also used to convey the central ideas of this theme. To make the '58 Eagle more enjoyable to you , more sports' coverage, a more complete description of Central's club program, and autograph pages have been added . The most noticeable new features are th e colored end sheets showing an aerial view of Central Regional. This yearbook would not have been possible without the cooperat ion of the student body, the faculty , and my wonderful staff. The aim of the Eagle staff of 1958 was to produce a yearbook worthy of Central Regional High School and one that would tell the story of our school year at C.R.H.S . We sincerely hope that we have succeeded in these a ims and that, as you turn the pages of this diary, you wi ll relive with us the crowded , happy days of our senior year . JOAN PETROVICH Ed itor 4

On September 24, 1957, the members of Central Regional High School suffered the grievous loss of a fin e teacher and a generous friend, Mr. Richard Winkel. Mr. Winkel personified comp letely the ideal that "A man is never so tall as when he stoops to hel p a child ." His sensitive understanding of young people and their problems earned him the love and respect of all who knew him. His modest generosity was still another proof of the worth of the man . He devoted himself tirelessly to both academic and social activi足 ties of young people, as charter member of Central Regional High School's Board of Education, as faculty member, and as Rotarian, Elk, and Councilman. Richard Winkel always remai ed young-the years resting lightly upon his shoulders.

He loved young people, seeking always to gain their

confidence, to dispel th eir fea rs, and to foster their aspirations and am bitions. To him life was a joyous ad venture.

He eagerly welcomed each

sacrifice as an opportunity and a challenge to serve. Others might see sacrifice as a hardship, but to Richard Winkel, the giving of himself for the weifare of others was a special privilege. Although his life closed unseasonabl y, he accom plished far more than his years.

Of Richard

Winkel we may aptly say, therefo re , HThis, then, w as a m an!"

First row: John W. Schmidt, Vice President; Edward H. Britton, President; M. Peryl King , and Hilbert F. Potter. Second row : Francis T. Miller, Wayne L. Schoenhut, and Anthony W. Raymond. Not shown are Floyd W. Mease, and Norman C. Fininger.

The Board of Education of Central Regional High School is composed of nine members representing the six constituent districts of Berkeley Township , Lacey Township, Ocean Gate, Island Heights, Sea side Heights, and Seaside Park . The population of each di strict determines the number of representatives it has on the Board. The School Board is essentially a policy-making body, setting the policies and procedures by which the school is run. It ha s superv ision over all education in the school district, including financial matters, choice of curricula , and the health , safety, and general welfare of the student body . These policies are carried out by the Superintendent who submits recommenda足 tions for keeping the school running smoothly . The Principal is the person respon足 sible for having the policies reach the student body.

The custodians maintain a twenty-four hour shift at Central Re gional. We are proud of the way our school looks through their efforts. In spite of the wear and tear, especially in the gym, it looks almost as new as the day we first came to Central .

EPILOGUE

As we look back upon our years

Of all our work and play,

We know that those at C. R. H. S.

Will never fade away .

Farewell, friends, our futures have begun!

This year's J.V. ball club was much improved over last year's club. The record they posted of seven wins and eleven losses is no picture of the kind of ball club they had. Coach Bodine expects to have most of his boys move up to the varsity next year.

Mr. Cameron had a very successful year with his junior high team. The boys did an excellent job considering they only practiced once a week. Due to q good coaching job many of these boys witl probably play J.V, ball next year. PHIL KOCH

"Left-right," "right-left," "to the rear, march," "you're out of step," were the constant cries of the twirlers as they marched down the field practicing for their next Saturday's game.
