2017 Award Honorees Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist: Recognizes community-minded corporate citizens who through their foundation, corporate giving program and/or employees, commit significant resources to assist organizations in meeting community needs.
Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist (500+ employees) Republic Services Republic Services is being honored this morning for its generous commitment to countless nonprofit organizations across the East Bay, including its support of Choice in Aging for more than two decades. This support has expanded Choice in Aging’s ability to provide transportation and other services to seniors in Contra Costa County. Republic employees even volunteered earlier this year to help paint and update the building to house Choice in Aging’s landmark intergenerational Montessori preschool. Republic Services’ commitment to philanthropy in the East Bay is reflected in the time, talent and financial resources offered to worthy organizations across sectors to reduce family violence through the West Contra Costa Family Justice Center, to promote economic opportunity through Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs and Kiwanis’ activities, and to support youth programs including the Richmond Police Activity League. Republic proudly helps to provide food for those in need through support of the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties and the Bay Area Rescue Mission. Republic supports animal rescue organizations, college scholarship programs for low-income high school students, libraries, school and community gardens. Republic also works to protect our region’s precious open space through support for the John Muir Land Trust, Save Mount Diablo, East Bay Regional Parks and the San Francisco Bay Trail.
Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist (100 to 499 employees) Fremont Bank Fremont Bank and Fremont Bank Foundation is the sort of partner that every nonprofit dreams about working with because they take the time to learn about your organization and then suggest ways they can help. They listen when you tell them what the needs are in the community. Not only do Fremont Bank and Fremont Bank Foundation work with Brian Hughes Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Contra Costa County, providing support to abused and neglected children, but they also step up for a wide array of other local organizations. Their commitment to the community ranges from feeding the hungry through programs at St. Vincent de Paul and Loaves and Fishes; to
east bay leadership council’s 7th Annual Philanthropy Awards
Diablo Ballet’s program in the local schools and Save Mt. Diablo’s latest map update. Their generous heart for the community knows no bounds. In 2016, Fremont Bank and Fremont Bank Foundation made 123 grants totaling $1,907,653. In the first half of 2017, they have made 59 grants totaling $887,775. Fremont Bank Founders, Morris and Alvirda Hyman established the Fremont Bank Foundation in 1995 as an independent, private grant-making foundation that is solely funded by Fremont Bank. Formed with an initial investment of $20,000, the Foundation now receives a significant percentage of Fremont Bank’s pre-tax income each year, resulting in millions of dollars in grants to community nonprofit organizations over the last 22 years. We could use more companies like Fremont Bank in the East Bay. Their generosity to local nonprofits is only exceeded by their genuine heart for the community they serve.
Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist (1 to 99 employees) DeNova Homes Lori and Dave Sanson were taught at a young age to help people less fortunate than them. Dave volunteered alongside his mother and father, painting houses and helping clean up homes for the elderly. Lori and her mother donated time and energy at the Bay Area Crisis Nursery and Meals on Wheels. When the couple founded DeNova Homes in Concord two decades ago, helping nonprofit organizations was a natural thing to do. Under their leadership, DeNova Homes is always among the first to step up to support countless nonprofits in the East Bay including HomeAid Northern California. DeNova Homes brings in a majority of the sponsorships for the HomeAid fundraisers and they volunteer as “builder captains” for shelter builds and maintenance projects including the Mission Solano Bridge to Life. The six thousand square foot shelter houses 80 women and children in need. When another builder had to cancel at the last minute, DeNova Homes, together with over 1,200 contributors and volunteers, joined ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” to build a new home for a Martinez family in just 4.5 days. Dave and Lori Sanson have also completed a major clean up and remodel of STAND! For Families Free of Violence shelter in Contra Costa County with freshly painted buildings, landscaping, outdoor gathering areas, and new fencing for a total donation of over $250,000. At a STAND! fundraising event, they even donated a car to a shelter resident in need. Lori Sanson initiated the idea of a Comedy/Concert Event to raise funds for HomeAid and to raise awareness in the fight to end homelessness. Dave and Lori have successfully raised over $500,000 for HomeAid with these events over the last 5 years. Companies that are committed to giving back are not that way by accident -- it starts with leadership from the top from people like Dave and Lori Sanson. And thanks to them, DeNova Homes continues to make our community a happier home for everyone.

Outstanding Philanthropist Pays tribute to an exceptional individual and/or family who generously provides a lead gift, substantially assists a nonprofit organization or offers philanthropic leadership.
Menbere Aklilu Menbere Aklilu, fondly known to many as “Menbe,” is a role model in the community, who has an undeniable passion for helping others. Raised by a single mother in Ethiopia who ran a restaurant and hotel, Menbe witnessed her mother’s murder at the hands of an irate customer when she was only ten. She was raised by her older brother and moved to Rome, Italy, where she married and became pregnant, but also became a victim of domestic violence. She was taken in by a homeless shelter, where she gave birth, and worked her way out of the shelter by mastering the Italian language and embarking on a new career in restaurants — skills that would serve her well in the future. Menbe came to America from Italy over 25 years ago, and was hired as a hostess at Salute, quickly rising through the ranks to become manager, and with the help of a generous patron, owner of the restaurant. This experience inspired Menbe to pay it forward. Menbe gives back in many ways: she hosts etiquette classes for children where she serves a four-course meal and provides a crash course in table manners and life lessons. She finances tuition for girls to attend Northern Lights School in Oakland and she celebrates mothers staying with their children at Oakland’s Children’s Hospital by preparing a specially-created lunch in the hospital cafeteria. To honor those who helped her in the past, several years ago Menbe began feeding the homeless on Thanksgiving, providing a complimentary, sit-down dinner at her restaurant: she served 300 the first year, 600 the next, and for the past three years, she served over 1,300 people, also providing free flu shots and medical checkups at the dinner as well as gifts of clothing and goodie bags. She intends to serve even more this year! On her 55th birthday Menbe once again demonstrated her generous spirit by hosting a special event to raise funds for three children who lost their mother on April 4, 2017. They witnessed their mother’s murder. “Those children are me,” Menbe said. “I know exactly what they are going through.” Despite the tragedy, Menbe knows that the boys will be OK. “I came out OK, and so will they.” Menbe is also an active volunteer, serving on the Richmond Community Foundation Board, and she established the Menbe’s Way Fund at the Foundation. Since she created the fund in July 2015, Menbe has made grants totaling just under $100,000 to dozens of local organizations. Menbe is the essence of philanthropy. She does not give with the hope of anything in return, but a hope that she can make a difference in the lives of those in need.

Outstanding Foundation or Community Grant Maker Recognizes a community grant-making organization that offers funds, encouragement and motivation to nonprofits and grant makers while supporting nonprofits’ organizational goals.
First 5 Contra Costa When babies and preschoolers are given a strong foundation, the benefits to children and society are lifelong. First 5’s investments and innovative ideas have built stronger foundations for thousands of young children in the East Bay. Since 2000, First 5 Contra Costa has invested more than $140 million in programs and activities for children ages 0 to 5, the most important time in a child’s development. Their funding supports twenty local public and nonprofit agencies and benefits 25,000 children, parents, and child care providers every year. In Contra Costa County, nearly two-thirds of children under age 5 are in child care while their parents work. Because of First 5 Contra Costa’s investments and strategies, including $2.2 million last year alone, more children in our county are starting kindergarten academically and socially prepared. First 5 funding has built a system for continuous quality improvement that is lauded throughout the state for its innovation and outcomes including training, support, and financial incentives for childcare providers to advance their education and professional development and become better qualified and more prepared teachers. With partners CocoKids and the Contra Costa County Office of Education, First 5 Contra Costa was selected to join a statewide effort to create a system that supports and incentivizes child care providers to offer the best care possible. More than 110 sites in Contra Costa County participate, with most serving low-income children. First 5 uses their funding to create solutions, to fund innovative programs, and to build enduring systems of support for the county’s youngest residents. As a result, more young children in the East Bay are getting a chance to succeed.
Outstanding Collaborative Project Recognizes a partnership or group demonstrating exceptional innovation and creativity resulting in a broad-based community benefit. Their activities excel at building support, raising funds and increasing public awareness.
Loaves and Fishes Contra Costa County Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa County has been a leader for several years in creating a collaborative environment in which East Bay nonprofits could better help address their overlapping missions. Loaves and Fishes has made clear that they were interested in breaking down the silos between organizations and creating an atmosphere of trust. It is that kind of collaborative culture that helped provide nearly 50 tons of fresh food

to the dining program and pantry each year along with hosting two Mobile Boutiques with White Pony Express. Loaves and Fishes also helped mobilize the White Pony Express Cold Weather Clothing program after two men died in Walnut Creek of exposure in 2016 -- ensuring people were safe and warm for the past two winters. And when Parkhaven Church opened an emergency warming center during the unusually cold and wet winter, Loaves and Fishes was quick to volunteer 50 meals each evening to those being sheltered there. In addition to the way they respond to new needs across the community, Loaves and Fishes finds creative ways to help other organizations. Loaves and Fishes’s creative Culinary Arts Program collaborates with the County Office of Education, Youth Homes, and Rubicon, Inc., together with area schools, to help disadvantaged youth and young adults develop marketable and certified skills. Currently, Loaves and Fishes is collaborating with White Pony Express, Contra Costa Interfaith Housing, Anka Behavioral, Inc., and the County Department of Health Services, to create a multiservice center for homeless people in East Contra Costa. Loaves and Fishes is a leader that works well with others and makes a difference every day for those in need.
Outstanding Volunteers of the Year Recognizes a volunteer(s) who starts, supports and/or enhances the programs and services that an organization provides, and makes a difference in the organization’s ability to serve its community.
Pete and Julie Davis Pete and Julie Davis are compassionate leaders with a consistent commitment to supporting at-risk families in the East Bay. Since 2005, the Davises have been champions of SHELTER, Inc.’s mission, organizing and leading community volunteer groups, elevating fundraising events, engaging others in the cause, spreading awareness of homelessness in Contra Costa County and steering the organization toward success. Julie and Pete have both served on SHELTER, Inc.’s board of directors, where Pete served as the Board President for three years; although, he preferred his even more distinguished role of “Santa” in which he delivered gifts to families working to rebuild their lives. Julie helped establish ‘Support for SHELTER’, a volunteer community group that has grown to nearly one hundred women who host food drives, prepare Mother’s Day baskets, collect jackets for the winter season, and cook meals for the Emergency Family Shelter in Martinez. Volunteering is always about sharing your time and talent to support a worthy cause, but Julie and Peter have given so much more. Their inspirational spirit, leadership, and love for the community make them a dynamic volunteer duo which any organization would be lucky to have on their side.

Next Generation Philanthropist Pays tribute to a young individual(s) (18 or under) whose activities excel at building support, raising funds, and/or increasing public awareness for the benefit of a nonprofit, school or community need.
Dwane Felix Dwane is a junior at Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon who has volunteered at Young Life’s Capernaum program for the past four years. The program gives young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities the chance to experience fun and adventure, develop fulfilling friendships and to challenge their limitations while building self-esteem through weekly club meetings and other exciting activities. Dwane has shown a special ability to connect with these kids. Even Capernaum’s adult volunteers who have years of experience with special needs students don’t handle some students as well as Dwane does. In this way, he’s mature and compassionate well beyond his 17 years. Dwane has become a buddy to one of the most challenging Capernaum friends named Brian. Brian is nonverbal, has ADHD, behavioral challenges, and is on the Autistic spectrum. Capernaum’s Club is not a place that would normally be fun for Brian -- it can be a crowded and noisy environment. Yet, Brian loves the Club and looks forward to it all week. It is safe to say that Dwane has had quite the affect on his buddy. And this is just one example of the many kids Dwane has connected with over the years. All of this would be quite impressive for any teen, but when you consider Dwane’s background, it’s truly remarkable. Dwane spent ages 6-13 in foster care. In that time he lived in seven different homes with seven different families. At age 13, he was adopted. Perhaps it is Dwane’s challenging background that gives him extra compassion to extend to his friends with disabilities and a sense of responsibility for those who face obstacles in life. Dwane is an exceptional young man who shows us what giving back is all about.

Lifetime Achievement Award Presented to an exceptional individual or East Bay-based organization that motivates others to give, commits time and energy without compensation, and provides talent for strategy, relationship enhancement and the successful solicitation of donations.
Kenneth E. Behring Kenneth Behring understands that giving is far better than receiving, and his life has been focused on partnering with others to bring people mobility, provide world-class education, and preserve history for generations to come. Just last fall, our East Bay community celebrated the 16th anniversary of the Wheelchair Foundation which has delivered more than 1 million wheelchairs to impoverished people thanks to Behring’s support. Through this work, thousands of people have been inspired to raise money, host events, run marathons, and travel the globe to share the gift of independence with those in need. Philanthropist, real estate developer and former Seattle Seahawks owner, Ken Behring not only focuses his philanthropic attention on mobility, he is the lead sponsor for National History Day competitions that educate thousands of children worldwide. Behring is also the founder of the Blackhawk Museums which has served as the venue for these Philanthropy Awards since 2013. Since 2000, the Blackhawk Museums have been an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and partnered to bring cultural exhibitions, historical artifacts and significant automobiles to our region. The preservation of culture and the environment are at the heart of Ken’s museum exhibit expansion. The most recent openings of two additional exhibits called ‘Spirit of the West’ and ‘Art of Africa’ put exquisite art and artifacts from around the world on display for our community. Ken and his wife, Pat, also set aside funding to support local schools and bus travel costs for visits to the Museum. Further proving his commitment to education, Behring has also generously supported the expansion of the UC Berkeley Principal Leadership Institute and the Kenneth E. Behring Center for Educational Improvement which focuses on training programs for public school principals, providing scholarships for fifty aspiring principals each year. Kenneth Behring has committed his life to giving back and the East Bay is eternally thankful.
