A former model and dancer Janice Azzopardi started Vipaj Modelling Centre two years ago. The aim of the agency is to offer alternative teaching from what is being offered on the island. Modelling courses are for 12 weeks and cover runways, modelling competitions, drama, photomodelling, nutrition and fitness, image and personality. Moreover in these courses models
are prepared to immerse themselves in the fashion industry. The courses end with a photoshoot which can be used as a model’s portfolio to be used for eventual work assignments and castings such as runway shows, editorial and commercial work. Vipaj is the licence holder for two licences in Italy ‘A New Star Stelle Per Lo Spettacolo’ and the prestigous international fashion event ‘Look of the Year.’ 21 Maltese models have already participated in the last two years and half
of them came back with awards or chosen for Italian films that are eventually presented at prestigous film festivals. Being a photographer herself, she ensures that each model has a suitable portfolio to present to clients as most of the times these portfolios determine whether a model will eventually be booked or not. Janice’s goal is to achieve success abroad with Maltese models as she firmly believes in the local talent.

What is beauty according to you?
Beauty is not just an appearance it’s what’s in the inside that matters most.
Who has the greatest influence on your life?
My mother has to be my greatest influence, she is always there to support me and give me good advice.
What do you expect to gain when you compete in beauty contests?
I expect to gain a higher self-esteem, confidence, experience and also get to know more people.
17 - Runway Affair
What have you learned about yourself since you’ve been modeling?
I learnt to appreciate myself.
What one word best describes you? Bubbly.
Do you think Modeling in Malta is recognized as a good level of talent? No, I wish it is!
Runway Affair - 18
What is your favourite outfit?
I tend to wear trendy and whats in fashion and at the moment high rise skirt with a crop top and a pair of wedges or maybe flats are my thing.
What would be the piece of clothing you’ll never wear? I never have that piece of clothing I would never wear, because if it’s in fashion I can always style it the way I like, never say never...
What has been your best modeling experience so far?
The best modeling experience has to be when I was chosen with other finalists to represent Malta in a competition in Italy.
What tip do you give to teens who are thinking of taking up modeling?
To take modeling seriously because you can make a career out of it, to take good care of them selves and if they compete and not be chosen with the finalist, they take it as an experience and maybe try again the following year, there is always a first time!

1. What is beauty according to you?
In my opinion beauty is not looks or style; it’s how you feel on the inside. It’s whenever you feel beautiful from within that you do look beautiful on the outside as well.
2. Who has the greatest influence on your life? I personally believe that Family is one of the most important things in ones’ life. Family should come always first and foremost.
3. What do you expect to gain when you compete in beauty contests?
It takes determination, dedication and a will to always improve where there is room. I compete with much effort and drive and it’s through always gaining more experience that you start to work towards achieving better results and enjoying every minute of each experience.
4. What have you learned about yourself since you’ve modeling? Modeling is about having great confidence about yourself that helps you to gain great talent to achieve great experiences. So far by modeling I learned to have better personality and it is important to have a good self esteem while being on a catwalk or during a photo shoot, also being confident enough to show people that modeling is definitely what I love doing most.
5. What one word best describe you? Determination with dedication

6. Do you think Modeling in Malta is recognized as a good level of talent?
It is a great way for us to improve and gain experience and confidence. However, I do believe that the modeling scene here in Malta is very limited and leads to no where, unless you strive at broadening your horizons abroad.
7. What is you favorite outfit?
Style wise I’m much into retro-modern and vintage clothing. I always aim at learning what looks best on me and not simply following trends.
8. What would be the piece of clothing you never wear? Definitely fishnet tights and leggings as pants.
21 - Runway Affair
9. What has been your best modeling experience so far?
So far all modeling experiences have helped me in different ways. One in particular was different from the others in the fact that not only did I model in different outfits as usual, but we also had a section through which we posed in front of the audience for a live photo shoot at the competition even itself. This have helped me for having a different experience rather than a common modeling competition.
10. What tip do you give to teens who are thinking of taking up modeling?
If teens are going to start taking part in modeling they have to make sure that modeling is their thing to do and being confident enough to help them achieve better experiences. Definitely they have to give their 100% atmost in every competition and important not to be a bad looser. [If you could get up the courage to begin, you have the courage to succeed.]

THE Right Gown There are many beauty pageants, modelling competitions around, be it for children, males, teens, and for married women. But the most sought after competitions are those for females. And the segment that most women love to watch are the evening gown competitions. Taking part in such events can be overwhelming for new comers, a headache for others whilst fun for most. Everyone loves to look glamorous. Everyone loves to be pampered and those who say they don’t are lying to their teeth! Who doesn’t like to wear a glitzy glamour gown with a mind blowing slit? Who doesn’t like to walk in a beautiful designed evening gown on a red carpet? And who doesn’t love those flashy high heeled shoes with stones? Understanding the title any participant has signed up for is of utmost important. Any participant needs to ask the following questions : 1. What is the title is it a modelling competition or is a beauty pageant? 2. Is it a Princess title, a miss title a teen title or a fashion model title ? Most events include a swimwear segment so that judges are able to judge the physique and the walk and almost all events have the evening gown competition. Choosing a gown is one of the most exciting parts of preparing to compete. As the most glamorous event in pageants, the evening gown competition provides entrants with an ideal opportunity to look their most beautiful project the image of a winner and clinch the crown. There are 5 key elements to look for when selecting your competition pageant dress. They are: •Color •Neckline •Proportion
23 - Runway Affair
•Fabric •Price The neckline should ultimately lead the eye back to your face whereas the colour should make your skin look radiant. Most of the time colour rocks! There are many beautiful vibrant colours to choose, from red, to daffodil yellow (for those who can take it), to emerald green, royal blue and one can also mix two colours together. Proportion is especially important to petite contestants. Ideally, you want most of the gowns stoning and ornate features to be on the top third of your dress and keep the bottom twothirds more simple to elongate and add height. Or you can flip this where the upper two-thirds is uniformed and the bottom third is fun and ornate. To look your tallest, dress from head to toe in one uniformed color or solid beading. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rules, but using the rule of thirds will help you know what to look for. Beware of certain material that add kilos to body measurements! Shiny materials, such as satin, shows every bump and bulge on your body. It also increases the appearance of your size where a matte fabric will not. Silk and chiffon flutter beautifully on stage if you have a wonderful walk. Typically, pageant dresses are made of higher quality fabrics and have better stones on them. They are longer in length to accommodate the 5” heels we pageant girls wear, and have stronger “inside construction” such as boning, corsets, and pads to hold things up and in place. So it’s important to set a budget, dresses can cost hundreds, expensive materials, expen-
Sketches by Gaetano Busuttil sive price! Once you settle on a price, select the dress that has the other four fashion elements best for you. Bottom line is you have to love the way your pageant gown makes you feel when you wear it. When you walk out on that stage, if your gown helps your personality shine to its fullest, then that is your gown, regardless of what you paid for it. Size doesn’t matter, shape does! The silhouette, or outline, of your body doesn’t change with diet or exercise because it is based on your skeleton and genes. Your weight may fluctuate throughout the years, but your basic body line cannot be altered. There are seven different body shapes. It’s important to know your body type so you can shop for clothes that emphasize or diminish certain physical features. Hourglass • Wear the same size top and bottoms. • Have a clearly defined waist. • Have a curved bottom. Full Hourglass • Buy a slightly larger top for your bust. • Waistbands are often too large. • Straight skirts rise up on you. • Feel most comfortable in more fluid fabrics Triangle (pear shaped) • Wear a larger size on your top half than your bottom. • Have a clearly defined waist. • Have narrower shoulders than hips. • Carry weight on your hips and thighs.
Inverted Triangle • Wear a larger size on your top half than your bottom. • Have wider shoulders than your hips. • Have a straight ribcage. • Prefer an uncluttered look. Lean Column • Wear the same size on your top and bottom halves. • Have a minimal bust • Little waist definition. • Flat hips and bottom. Rectangle • Shoulders and hips in line. • No waist definition. • Flat hips and bottom. • Extra weight around your middle. Round (apple shaped) • Rounded shoulders. • Fullness in the tummy area. • Wonderful shapely legs. • Feel uncomfortable when clothes are tucked in. The aim in choosing clothing is to create the illusion of having a neat hourglass figure and look proportional. That means: • Shoulders and hips in line • A defined bust • A waist (even with a softly curved tummy) • A curved bottom Choosing the Right Gown To emphasize a physical trait you like, look for a gown, or clothing, with stones, a style or a special feature to bring attention to that part of your body. The aim is to look so stunningly beautiful that you take the judges’ breath away. Curve hugging gowns in luxurious crepes, beaded fabrics, French laces with
crystals, sparkling brocades, gold or silver metallic, or rich velevetst rimmed with rhinestones have all been worn with success. To project the right image especially for teen contests dresses should be appropriate for the age. Contestants are expected to wear floor length dresses that convey a suitably youthful, wholesome image and look their age. Gowns in white, and pastels in soft fabrics like chiffon, tulle georgette, satin, and sometimes velvet are popular with lace trims, pearl or bead embroidery, dainty necklines, puffed or ruffled sleeves, peplums and gathered or tiered skirts. They need to look as young as fresh as possible. Sometimes a glitzier gown or a too mature look on a teenager can backfire. It will take points off if a gown is inappropriate for a certain age group. Although the gown is not officially judged the images a contestant creats in that gown reveals what personal style she would bring to the title that would set her apart from other contenders. Some of the qualities judges consider include : First impressions Facial beauty Poise, presence and composure Appropriate image for the pageant Appropriate for the age Personality projection and charisma If the gown and the girl compliment each other Carriage, walk posture,
modelling technique Grace and composure under pressure Proper fit Naturalness, youthfulness and grooming Good taste
Overall appearance
Selecting the ideal pageant gown requires balancing a host of different considerations. From the image of the pageant you are entering, to the imate your gown conveys to the judges, to your
body type and any figure flaws, to skin tone and hair colour, as well as skin tone and hair colour under stage lights! The Right Colour! Choosing the right colour for you can be daunting but usually contestants get influenced by the current trends of by looking at the previous year contests. Colours that go well during the evening gown competitions are : White Black Nudes/Beige skin tones Pastel/Acqua/Turquoise Mid blues Deeper blues Gold metallic Silvery The colours that usually are unsuccessful are brown,
grey, camel, rust, mustard, olive green, navy blue, dark purple, orange and stripes. Bras and Undies for Pageant Evening Gowns Proper undergarments are the foundation for that perfect look! Undergarments include backless long line bras, bust to hip bustiers, bust cups, waist-cinchers, T-panties and hosiery with built in panties. The bust is an important feature in pageant clothing, so a good bra defines, shape and supports Competitors often wonder what type of panties to wear. Although some girls wear ‘T-panties’ pageant clothing specialists usually recommend creating as smooth waist-t- thigh silhouette with sheer –towaist pantyhose. Pageant Jewellery Accessories are a must and needs to be impeccable. Jewelery enhances and finishes the look. It must never overpowers a face. Facts to be taken into consideration are the contestant’s neckline, the girl’s weight, hair and eyes, followed by the dress design, facial shape and size and hairstyle which will finally complete the look! Avoid anything that pulls a judges attention off your face. Have fun participating in pageants and have fun shopping for the evening gown!
