Welcome ...
Jon Johnston Sales Director, KBB
This year’s edition of kbb Birmingham will reflect the phenomenal growth that the industry has enjoyed in the last two years, welcoming over 400 industry leading brands to the NEC, Birmingham, including Novy, Franke, Carron Phoenix, Smeg and Samsung. We’re looking forward to seeing how exhibitors will explore and learn from this year’s Future theme and its four trends (Society, Smart Technology, Disruption as Opportunity and Materiality), as well as the high calibre of products, methods and ideas that each will bring to the show. The event acts as Europe’s key opportunity to launch new products and materials in 2018, and will also provide businesses with constructive advice in the form of practical conference sessions in the Retail & Design Conference. The wealth of features in this year’s agenda including Colin Wong’s revolutionary new “The Rock” concept, and BiKBBI’s ‘Installer Zone’ prove there is something for everyone at kbb – whether it be retailers, installers, suppliers or buyers.

Come and see us at stand T125. We have created a mini lecture theatre where through the duration of the show, a number of industry contacts will be impart advice that will genuinely help installers with their businesses, you will see within this supplement a programme indicating the times of each lecture and the its subject matter. We welcome all to our stand, especially our members. kbb 2018 provides us with a perfect platform to meet and greet old friends whilst forging new relationships and increasing our membership. So why not take time to come and say hi to the BiKBBI team and discover more about the raft of initiatives and partnerships that we are currently undertaking to help both you and your industry, after all the exhibition only comes around every other year so opportunities are hardly plentiful.

BiKBBI HAS LARGEST STAND YET! The BiKBBI is back at the kbb exhibition with its largest stand to date covering a sizeable 50 square metres. The stand is designed with a seating area to enable its main function of meeting and greeting members and other show visitors who may be interested in the institute; however, it also features an area that will host seminars that will cover all of the BiKBBI’s core pillars which is education & development, standards & inspection, and support & mediation plus much, much more. A glance at the comprehensive seminar programme in the blue box on the opposite page and you will notice that many issues addressing installers and the kbb industry at large are included in the programme and so if you plan to attend the show, you may wish to plan your visit around one or two of the many subjects covered. All members of the BiKBBI team will be

kbb 2018 Show Guide in attendance at some point during the show to welcome you and assist you with any questions that you may have and our team at The Installer magazine will be there as well if you have any questions. In more general terms, the kbb exhibition only comes around every other year and so it’s always worth a visit as you are guaranteed to see new products and innovations, whereas some shows that are organised annually often sees manufacturers showcasing products previously seen from the year before. From a BiKBBI perspective, we have witnessed installer visitor numbers increase show-on-show and we anticipate seeing even more this time around. By nature, installers can be quite an insular bunch as they are so busy but getting on with their working lives, but it is encouraging to witness a real sea-change in attitude in more recent years as many are embracing the fact that they are an intrinsic part of a huge industry that can benefit immensely from their acceptance wider issues; after all, the industry currently faces many threats, like the toughening economy caused by Brexit and all that this entails including rising prices of products
from Europe. Then there’s the current skills shortage and all these issues, especially the latter, can only change with a collective effort from kbb installers right up to those who pull the necessary strings in the Government. The BiKBBI can only be a conduit, a facilitator if you like, to affect the changes necessary, it really needs installers and more notably BiKBBI members who are at the coal-face, to play a huge part by embracing apprenticeships to help bring along the next generation of installers. We hope to see you at the show, as we suggested, do plan your visit to get the most out of it. You may even choose to stop over and visit for two days, if so, Birmingham is a great place for a night out with its plethora of bars and restaurants and there are plenty of affordable hotels to choose from including Jury’s Inn, Novotel, Travelodge Copthorne etc. if you want to be in the hub of things then look for places in Broad Street and you can’t go far wrong. Of course Birmingham is renowned for its curry and Balti houses so we should mention the ‘curry mile’ which is located just south of the city centre (details are given on page 24 of this supplement). We look forward to seeing you at the NEC.

What do I need to know about the CE Mark on bathroom products?
STAND C105 HALL 20
You are probably used to looking for a CE Mark on toys and electrical appliances. But did you know that bathroom equipment (shower enclosures, shower trays, glass and plastic shower screens, baths and ceramic ware like toilets, basins and bidets) must also carry the CE Mark? The UK market is being flooded with products that don’t meet stringent safety & quality requirements; this makes it especially important for consumers to look for the CE Mark when choosing their new bathroom. So what does a CE Mark mean for you? A CE Mark is an assurance that a product which has been made or imported has been certified “fit for purpose”.

Bathroom products that fall into this category are: Baths for domestic use including whirlpool baths Shower enclosures Bidets Urinals WC’s Shower trays Washbasins

A Travelodge provides accommodation for those on a more restrictive budget. EAT & BE MERRY CURRY MILE Birmingham is widely renowned for its vast amount of curry houses. Hail a cab and ask the driver to take you to ‘the Curry Mile,’ he’ll know it for sure. After a short journey heading south from the city centre you’ll be dropped off in an area that comprises Stoney Lane, Ladypool Road and Stratford Road and its sometimes referred affectionately as ‘the Balti Triangle’, due to its multitude of Balti houses.

Shababs , Balti Triangle
kbb 2018 Show Guide The ‘Balti Triangle’ was the originator of Birmingham’s Balti restaurants back in the 80’s and the appeal of these restaurants for many lies in the fact that many do not to have a license to sell alcohol (you bring a bottle) which results in lower prices, which brings an abundance of customers. BRINDLEYPLACE It is situated within the liveliest part of Broad Street and lays claim to being Birmingham’s foremost business, leisure and tourist destination. Built around the historic canals of the city, Favourite eateries include Pizza Express, Café Rouge, All-Bar-One, Slug & Lettuce, Pitcher & Piano etc. it’s always a good spot to meet friends within a lively and friendly atmosphere. BROAD STREET Broad Street is at the heart of Birmingham nightlife and its here where you will find many restaurants and night spots all within a short walk of each other and it’s a magnet for party-goers. Any bar within the Walkabout chain is known for its great atmosphere, music and food and the one on Broad Street is no exception. Opposite lies Reflex, the 80’s themed party bar that’s always good for a night out, even on week days; so if Duran Duran or Erasure’s ‘Little Respect’ is your thing (it is mine) then head there later in the evening. A tad older and flares and dancing to a bit of funk or soul

are your thing? Then head to Popworld! You can’t miss it as its located in an old converted theatre opposite the Jury’s Inn. A couple of other places on Broad Street that will attract a different clientele is Jongleurs, comedy club which is located in the venue called 6; and if roulette is your thing head to the Grosvenor Casino which offers great food, late bars, quality entertainment and the best gaming. For something a little more ‘low-brow’ then head for the Gentleman & Scholar at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham which is has a sophisticated and welcoming pub-styled traditional tavern with a contemporary twist. SHOP TILL YOU DROP Birmingham is rarely bettered for shopping as it has many malls and a thriving city centre; most people will know of the Bullring which has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years but fewer from outside of the city will know the Great Western Arcade which is worth a visit even if its for no other reason than to take in its Victorian elegance. THE MAILBOX At the opposite end of the architectural scale is the highly contemporary ‘The Mailbox’ which uniquely combines business, restaurants, nightlife and shopping all contained under one vast roof. It was

There are over 160 of the most imaginative and desirable shops for you to explore and the iconic Selfridges department store which stocks all your favourite designers, the latest brands and has a great food hall. home to 30 independent shops, hair and beauty salons, cafes, bars, an independent cinema/theatre and a packed programme of weekend fairs festivals and events. THE GREAT WESTERN ARCADE For a completely different shopping experience try the GWA with its elegant Victorian sophistication and less hustle and bustle. Founded in 1876, this arcade houses independent boutique-style retailers, genuine specialists and has a sprinkling of high street names to give a perfect experience for more discerning shoppers. PICCADILLY ARCADE Just off New Street, Piccadilly Arcade is famous for its hand-painted ceilings and independent specialist retailers offering high quality jewellery and gifts with specialist advice. BURLINGTON ARCADE It’s located at The Burlington hotel next to Apple on New Street and is also a place to find specialist retailers, not the big high street brands, better still for a pretty unique drink or meal experience check out the Bacchus Bar below the arcade. It has amazing ornate décor with a Roman theme as it’s named after the Roman god of wine and intoxication. The Bacchus is definitely one of the city centre’s best kept secrets for good food and drink.

GETTING TO THE NEC BY ROAD
BY RAIL
BY PLANE
If you plan to visit the show by road then the good news is that the NEC is located around eight miles east of central Birmingham and benefits from being reached easily by car due to a number of nearby motorways including: M1, M5, M6, M40 and M42.
Travelling by rail means you can relax, work on your laptop or even sleep whilst travelling to the exhibition; and although it’s not quite door-to-door, it almost is as the NEC has its very own station which it shares with Birmingham International Airport. It means that even if the weather is inclement you don’t have to brave the elements as there is an inside walkway into the exhibition halls from the station.
Birmingham International Airport is located adjacent to the NEC exhibition halls and is part of the overall NEC complex, it is therefore an amazingly user-friendly airport for show visitors from afar. It literally takes minutes to walk from baggage reclaim to the exhibition halls and all under cover!
