A ERO / WATER HARVESTER Creates water from thin air 2016 10 WEEKS UMEÃ… INSTITUTE OF DESIGN MA ADVANCED PRODUCT DESIGN CARE OF URBAN NATURE 2030

ABOUT COURSE Term project in collaboration with Husqvarna group. Course focuses on forecasting what future cities of 2030 could look like. Analysing the possible problem areas and looking into solutions that could improve the care of urban nature.

PROJECT By the year 2030, many big cities will have serious problems to maintain their greeneries because of lack of water. Reasons are increased global water demand, long droughts & water pollution and daily excessive usage of existing water resources. Aero focuses on how to sustain greeneries in future cities and keep gardening an affordable and enjoyable activity.

COULD HUMIDITY HARVESTING BE THE SOLUTION?

Humidity harvesting is a good alternative water source. It stands for 80% of the earth’s total fresh water. Even though humidity is an accessible resource worldwide, sustainable solutions of today are only possible in especially foggy areas. But how could we make it accessible to everyone, even people in dense city environments?

FUTURE FORECAST

WHAT WILL THE CITY OF 2030 BE LIKE?

Due to shortage of water it will be hard for future cities to maintain the greeneries in an affordable and environmentally friendly way. As a result, people will seek out for new ways to be more independent and harvest their own energy & water. Clustered communities and selfsustaining ecosystems will be more present than today. Dead spaces of today such as rooftops will be better utilized.

AERO / WATER HARVESTER 11

PROBLEMS FOR EXISTING PARKS “ Watering is very costly. In summer a truck drives around the city several times per week to fill up water bags.” “ Watering plants for the right amount is tricky. A lot of water is wasted. “ “ A lot of maintenance work. In the future citizens could participate as well.”

To collect knowledge and insights for this project, we collectively traveled to Malmö and Umea (Sweden), where Urban Gardening is evolving in a bigger scale.

STUDY VISITS IN SWEDEN

Talking to specialist revealed future challenges and current problem areas regarding plant watering.

LIMITED ACCESS TO WATER “ We wanted to do gardening, but couldn’t find access to water. “ “ The ground water sometimes gets contaminated by the salty sea water. “

SIZE VARIATIONS

Aero comes in 2 sizes. The Aero-mini version ideally fits to the private balconies or indoors watering. It has integrated water hose that can be pulled out during the watering process, so plants are easier to reach. Water pressure can be turned on and off directly from the nozzle, so water is not spilled out when moving from one watering spot to another. If the house is located in an insufficient sun area, Aero-mini can be connected to the electric house grid by cable, to power the water harvesting process. Aero-mini can produce up to 20L of water per day, which is enough to support approximately 5m2 of vegetable gardening. The interaction and water level indications are shown on the top surface.

2015 1.5 WEEKS UMEÅ INSTITUTE OF DESIGN MA ADVANCED PRODUCT DESIGN SOUND AND LIGHT PROJECT

ABOUT COURSE Anna is a two weeks collaboration project between two Master programs at Umeå University: MA Interaction Design + MA Advanced Product Design. The research is based on collaboration with the main University hospital of Umeå.

PROJECT Full anaesthetic is not a pleasant experience and follows the same procedure regardless of the patient’s age. Even adults find it unpleasant, but for kids this experience can be terrifying as they are more emotional and do not always understand why they have to go through this frightening process.

TEAM Janis Beinerts Lars Sundelin Sebastian Aumer Trieuvy Luu The main challenge is to ensure kids don’t feel stressed, take deep and slow breaths during the anaesthetic procedure

How to support children d ane sthes i a procedure?

ILDREN

d uri ng ANNA / BREATHING ASSISTANT 31

GENERAL ANESTHESIA CAN BE TERRIFYING FOR CHILDREN The child has to breathe through a tightly sealed mask for up to several minutes. Many times this causes children to panic, making the procedure a long and scary experience.

METHOD OF DISTRACTION The procedure, doctors and space itself can feel scary for kids. Doctors today try to distract kids by giving them toys to play with while gas is inhaled. Another approach is to distract kids by showing their heart rate and breathing levels.

USER RESEARCH & CASE STUDIES

EXPERIENCING THE PROCEDURE Together with anesthetist from UmeĂĽ University hospital we went through the procedure simulation. We tried to better understand the problems kids have to face and how to make it easier, both for kids and their parents, but also for the medical personal. ANNA / BREATHING ASSISTANT 33

1 full circle = 1 full breath

The kid can practice breathing with his parents before the procedure.

CONCEPT AND USER TESTING

Procedure is less scary as patient is already familiar with some of the activities.

ANNA is a breathing assistant that helps the child to remain calm and breathe properly. The interactive lights are simple to understand and speed up the sedation process, benefiting everyone involved.

Engagement from ANNA helps to focus and to be distracted from other equipment in the room.

The breathing assistant gradually lights up indicating the progress of breathing The goal is to reach full circle. When it is done ANNA blinks and creates a reward sound.

Anna helps the doctor to monitor the breathing progress.

ANNA / BREATHING ASSISTANT 35

Test prototypes were made using Arduino kit and LED straps.

IDEATION AND PROTOTYPING

YEAR............. TIME............. INSTITUTION. PROGRAM...... CO U R S E . . . . . . . .

2017 20 WEEKS UMEĂ… INSTITUTE OF DESIGN MA ADVANCED PRODUCT DESIGN THESIS PROJECT

ABOUT COURSE There are roughly 12.2 million workers in the welding industry. But due to harsh conditions it is estimated that in the USA alone there will be a shortage of 300 000 welders by the year 2020.

PROJECT Falcon is a next generation personal protection equipment for professional manual welders that need non-stop air supply, clear vision and full radiation protection to execute high precision welds in challenging welding environments. Welding helmets available today are heavy and have a small view angle. Falcon addresses these issues by introducing curved auto darkening lenses that offer full view angles in all directions. Better weight distribution and lighter material combinations.

The main challenge is to fully protect the welder without lowering the comfort and efficiency.

YEAR............. TIME............. INSTITUTION. PROGRAM...... CO U R S E . . . . . . . .

2015 4 WEEKS UMEĂ… INSTITUTE OF DESIGN MA ADVANCED PRODUCT DESIGN PARAMETRIC MODELLING

ABOUT COURSE The course provided a real life simulation, where existing drill components needed to be used be used to create a future design, considering plastic injection moulding rules. New knowledge of rapid prototyping and SolidWorks modelling was provided.

PROJECT For amateur users todays drills don’t provide any drilling guidance. As a result, it is almost impossible to be in control of the drilling angle and drill hole depth. The new design ensures users to have full over this measurements by having an integrated assistance ruler. With a guided ruler, users can be confident and work much faster and precise. The main challenge is to provide users full control of the drilling process.

How to provide depth and an control while drilling?

R

ngle PRECISION DRILL / FEIN SCREWDRIVER 75

Now you are in full control of th drilling process

Those who have tried to drill, know how hard it can be to make a straight hole and to be aware how deep the drill bit is already in the material.

3 AXES CONTROL

Being in control of 3 axes by eye sight only is nearly impossible. That is why we need some guidance.

mm

he 0 - 90 PERPENDICULAR

IN RIGHT ANGLE

People have tried various self made methods: like taping the drill bit to know the depth, or sliding the power tool against an 90 degree object to estimate the angle. But these methods are unreliable and don’t provide the needed precision.

IN CHOSEN DEPTH

Precision drill has integrated measuring tools this allows user to be in full control over 3 dilling axes.

PRECISION DRILL / FEIN SCREWDRIVER 77

SET THE ANGLE AND DEPTH

Pull out the ruler

Set the depth and lock

The sliding ruler works as a stopper. You just set the depth and the ruler will make sure you don’t drill further than that.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

The ruler is integrated in the precision drill, so that it is allays there when needed.

ABOUT COURSE This term healthcare project is in collaboration with Philips: “Let the Philips come even closer.“ The course emphasis is the need of healthcare quality improvement in a home environment.

PROJECT There are 300 000 new ostomy patients every year. In most cases this operation is the only option to save their lives with the cost of having an external stool collecting bag for the rest of their lives. Today’s bag solutions are very primitive and unpleasant. Patients have a hard time managing these bags. Their main problem is the fear of leakage, bad odour and unattractive appearance. This leads to a damaged self-image, poor life quality and depression.

YEAR............. TIME............. INSTITUTION. PROGRAM...... CO U R S E . . . . . . . .

2014-2015 10 WEEKS UMEÅ INSTITUTE OF DESIGN MA ADVANCED PRODUCT DESIGN UNDERGROUND IRON-ORE MINING

ABOUT COURSE The first term project during Advanced Product Design is executed in collaboration with the LKAB mining company and Atlas Copco.

PROJECT The main challenge was how to solve the operator ’s vision problem while increasing scaling productivity and safety at the same time. Optiflex is a product for the existing scaletec rigs. It significantly improves the operator ’s vision and access to crucial data that improves productivity, precision, rock surface evaluation and safety.

Collaboration with Atlas Copco and LKAB

Full report

How to provide a clear vision scaletec operator?

n for a OPTIFLEX / VISION AND LIGHT 101

The study visit in Kiruna mine is the deepest mining sector worldwide which is 1365 m deep. For us, this was a unique chance to see machinery in action and to get feedback from LKAB employees. FIELD STUDY & PROBLEM ANALYSES

We got the chance to listen to lectures from from Atlas Copco on mining trends, future challenges and possible design opportunities. Additionally, we got deeper insights on mining control systems and remote operations.

Focus area – scaling. Main problem : low vision for operator.

View is blocked by cabin’s frame and windshield security bars. The long boom is right in front of the operator, while the light support from the scaletec rig is insufficient.

OPTIFLEX / VISION AND LIGHT 103

Dual cameras work as human eyes and can map 3d data

The operator has access to this data from the monitor placed in his cabin. In future scaletec models it could be displayed through a heads– up display.

PLACEMENT & ENHANCED VISION MODES

Operator can see close up view on the side monitor

The operator can switch from normal dual vision to 3D CAD view, which is constantly updated as he works. This gives a clearer picture of rock surface geometry, hidden cracks and possible threats.

Live mapping allows to see clearly which rocks still needs to be removed

Side by side camera view

As Kiruna mine 3D scans their mine, it is possible to combine data from existing situation and planned geometry. This way we can assist operator on which stones needs to be removed. This data can be color-coded and placed on top of live-stream footage.

This is a view from left and right camera’s perspective. It is a very close view, and the extra light source makes it easy for the operator to analyze surface structures and to aim.
