Selected Works Brian Tucker Collection What do you do with an art collection numbering just over 1,000 works? For Brisbane based accountant Brian Tucker the answer was clear: auction selected works and use the profits to fund bursaries for artists from regional and remote communities to enable them to undertake projects or professional development activities. Always a visionary, Brian Tucker, art collector and arts supporter, is now embarking on a new phase in his life as arts philanthropist. It is a great privilege then for Jan Manton Art Gallery to be involved in the auctioning of a selection of works from Brian’s collection. Brain’s passion for collecting started early when, as a young accountant, his first few clients happened to be involved in the visual arts. These encounters opened his eyes to the ‘world of art’ and Brian established himself as a specialist visual arts accountant, with a particular focus on emerging artists and Indigenous Art Centres. Each year, for extended periods of time, Brian travels to the Art Centres located in the remote Indigenous communities of Central Australia, the Kimberley and Northern Territory. He

has been privileged to follow and collect the work of the older, senior artists, and the contemporary works that are emerging from the next generation in these locations. His collection reflects these strong ties with artists such as Rammey Ramsay, Shirley Purdie and Sally Gabori among the large body of Indigenous art works represented in his collection. Brian is also committed to urban artists, particularly Brisbane artists, and his collection includes Davida Allen, Luke Roberts, Leonard Brown and Gemma Smith, among others. Brian says his work has exposed him to the visual arts in Australia in ways that he could never have imagined when he started his practice in 1980. Artists from across Australia have benefited, profited and been encouraged with his unwavering commitment to their art practice. For artists he is much more that a collector. His generosity has never faltered and gratefully will continue with this new phase in his love affair with art.
