Before the approach 2 Aug - 2 Sep 2017
Before the approach Before the approach explores a series of my own personal encounters with the landscape that have momentarily felt hypnotically cinematic, moments more akin to a glimpse that may pass you at the beginning or at the end of a scene in a film. Through translating these moments back into painting, the works consider the relationship between painting and the cinematic. They contemplate the influence romantic painting has had on the aesthetics of cinema and how cinema (and in turn romantic painting) can influence perception and experience of place. Similar to the way a film combines a series of fragments to form a whole; the paintings work together, building on one another, to form a unique narrative of their own. Michelle Gilbert
