Total Other: Inspired by Eva Hesse
In her latest series of purple paintings titled Total Other, Natalie Lavelle draws profound inspiration from Eva Hesse’s concept of a “total other” standpoint, forging a dialogue between abstraction and corporeality.
Like Hesse, Lavelle explores the tactile and sensorial dimensions of art, where each brushstroke becomes a gesture towards the ineffable. Her canvases, suffused with hues of purple, evoke a sensory richness that transcends mere visual representation. They invite viewers into a realm where colour becomes emotion, and texture becomes touch—a testament to Lavelle’s capacity in merging minimalist aesthetics with abstract expressionism.
This body of work embraces influences from Eva Hesse, as Lavelle delves into themes of corporeality and object-hood with visceral intensity. Her artworks interact dynamically with gallery spaces, challenging viewers to confront their physicality and presence within artistic narratives.
In Total Other, Lavelle navigates the interplay between presence and absence, using negative space to emphasize the corporeal presence of her paintings. Each artwork is a deliberate exploration of materiality, where the physicality of paint on canvas becomes a conduit for introspection and sensory awakening.
Echoing Hesse’s exploration of object-hood and bodily scale, Lavelle’s paintings assert their presence in the gallery space, engaging viewers in a dynamic dialogue between form and environment. Through layers of pigment and nuanced brushwork, she challenges viewers to confront their own physicality and presence within the artistic narrative.
Total Other is more than an exhibition; it is a passage into the depths of abstraction and the profound implications of artistic expression. It invites us to reconsider our perceptions of art and identity, echoing Hesse’s call for a “total other” standpoint—a place where art becomes a transformative instrument, altering consciousness and expanding modes of sensibility.
