HEIRLOOM SEWING UPDATE Created by Jennifer Tryon

JENNIFER TRYON Jennifer Tryon was a tv journalist turned full-time crafter. Sewing was her first love. She writes a blog and produces programming that stems from her namesake, Tryon a HomeMade life. The idea behind Jen's brand is that you don't need to be an expert designer to create some of the amazing projects we see posted and pinned online. Jennifer lives in Toronto, with her husband and three children. -----

Nothing beats holiday gifts handmade and from the heart. This Janome Skyline S9 embroidery project perfectly delivers both. I got my mom to send me a photo of my grandmother’s recipe for butter tarts, I opened it on my iPad. The rest was done on the free Janome AcuSketch App and the Janome Skyline S9.

PROFILE

Tania Denyer I have been creating since before creating was cool... sewing, drawing, designing, quilting... my curious mind always looking to try something new. I designed my first dress at 16 and have not wasted a moment since. I don't let "can't" stop me, no matter whether it works out or not, I will have learned something! I truly believe we are creative beings and sometimes all that is needed is a kind heart and a hand to help you along your way. Go out, look around, make what you see and share it with others... I think these are the keys to happiness. Look... make... share and be happy.

Appliqué Step up your straight stitch appliqué by colour matching your threads to the base fabrics for a clean, modern look.

STOCKING AND BAG

Michael Smith From an early age, Michael expressed his creativity, imagination and flair for design Following two diplomas in Fashion Design, his career path took a detour when he discovered his passion for quilting. In addition to being an Educator for Janome, Michael operates a long-arm quilting business (The Sewcial Quilter) from his home studio. Often described as “a social butterfly”, Michael is excited to travel as a member of the Janome family in order to share his love of all things sewing, quilting and creating.

I love the AcuFeed Flex system because of its versatility. There are a variety of feet, (or shoes, as I like to call them) for the Twin/Dual foot holder, which I used to sew some cute upcycle projects. - Michael Smith

Versatile Acufeed™ Flex Heavy duty fabrics and bulky seams are no match for the Acufeed™ Flex system. Perfect, even stitches every time! There's a foot for every need: Stitch in the Ditch (SD), 1/4 Inch Guide (OD), Open Toe (UD), Straight Stitch (STD) for use with the straight stitch needle plate, and the standard (AD) for general sewing.

Sewists who use bulky fabrics like wool know what a challenge creating buttonholes can be. The buttonhole stabilizer plate supports and holds fabrics for extra stability when sewing on uneven or hard to feed fabrics.

Trouble Free Stitch layers together. Mark the buttonhole and slide the fabric stack into the gap in the stabilizer plate. Pull the buttonhole lever into place and start sewing. Also Look For the Extra Large Buttonhole Foot and Stabilizer Plate for sewing buttonholes up to 3 inches long.

READYMADE Created by Debbie Bates

Remake Clothing Source: Old Navy 2018

Bear Appliqué PJ, Carter’s

Off-the-rack appliquéd pajamas inspired a custom-matched trio of holiday outfits. She likes ponies but he is mad about band instruments? No problem! Appliqué little ones’ favourite motifs onto readymade clothing or accessories for time-saving (hero-making!) gifts.

Crafting custom appliqué motifs.

1 SUPPLY LIST Readymade garment (prewashed if needed), Fusible web, Appliqué fabric and thread Optional: Fusible stabilizer

2 MOTIF RESOURCES Simple silhouettes are easier to stitch and usually best for kids wear. Suggested resources: Kids’ (or your own) drawings, Clip art or Colouring pages

3 CUT AND FUSE Follow fusible web instructions. In general: draw motif on paper side of fusible web and trim 1/4" around shape outline. Fuse to the wrong side of fabric. Trim on outlines.

IF YOU GIVE A BOY A TRUMPET… With a simple appliqué, you can deliver holiday smiles and a gift like no other,

Faster projects leave more time to relax and play with the kids. The right accessory can help you on your way. Appliqué is easy with the help of the Janome AP foot, available for most models. Learn more in the post on Janome Life.

4 AUDITION AND FUSE Check the scale and placement of shapes. In this example, our double bass needed to be larger and we tried different arrangements of the shapes. When finalized, peel off paper backing and fuse in place.

5 STABILIZE AND STITCH Optional fusible stretch stabilizer will add stability and improve stitch quality on lighter fabrics. Stitch motif in place with zig zag or stitch of choice.

S

Soft as the trim on Santa’s cap, a plush band adds a comforting touch to a simple pillowcase. Satisfy the itch to stitch snuggle-worthy gifts for the family with super-soft trimmed pillowcases. With the ease of AcuFeed™ sewing, you can tame tricky fabrics and make several of these in under an hour. PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS

Fabric: Wee Gallery for Dear Stella

There are lots of plush fabrics and faux furs on the market today. (We used Cuddle® from Shannon fabrics) Their ultra-soft thick pile is no cause for panic with a few simple sewing tricks.

1

The walking foot (Go AcuFeed™! On specifically equipped Janome models) is your friend. It provides equal control from the top and bottom of your fabric stack to move layers with ease.

2 Plentiful pinning also keeps layers in place.

Cuddle fabric does not shrink, but cottons 3 can. Pre-wash cottons to keep projects from distorting.

Maker MAGAZINE

24

Use a press sheet to protect plush fabrics from 4 the heat of the iron. Pre-test your plush fabric for heat sensitivity or avoid ironing.

Keep a lint roller handy. Most plush fabrics are 5 knit and will not unravel but they will shed. or more tips visit Sew4Home and 6 FShannon fabrics

SERGING MADE

Easy

Looks can be deceiving when it comes to serger techniques. With the right accessory foot and threads, complicated finishes can be made easily.

BEADING FOOT

PIPING FOOT

CORDING FOOT A

CORDING FOOT B

With rounded channels up top and below, strands of beads or pearls can be attached to edging with invisible thread for a crisp, neat finish.

Create a tailored finish by adding premade piping to edges or seams or use the foot to make custom piping from fabric and cord. The wrong side of the fabric is clean and professionally finished. Available in 1/8 and 3/16.

Adds body and flair to fine fabrics by inserting fishing line into the rolled hem. Ideal for bridal veil finishing, costume and evening wear. Fine and ultra-fine cording, wire or thread is passed through a small guide loop set close to the needle.

Here you can use yarn, cord or other heavier filling to give a strong finish to the border of heavier fabrics like table linens. This foot features a larger hole in an extended guide to align thicker cording prior to stitching. The foot can also create a padded hem.

The 2000CPX Cover Pro machine adds to your professional finishing options.
