OH CANADA! QUILT BY TAMARA KATE @ 2017

M100 QDC Special Canada 150 Edition

INTRO

See Oh! Canada Up Close Tamara’s Oh! Canada quilt will hang at select shows across Canada throughout 2017. Be sure to check out the over-the-top straight line quilting that Tamara achieved with her MC8200 using AcuFeed™. Tamara keeps the quilt lines simple and lets the clean design shine through. You can achieve similar results using either AcuFeed or your walking (even feed) foot. Thread colour choices can either blend into the background fabric (like the grey on grey or green on green) or pop (like the occasional line of red stitching on the grey background). For even more impactful quilting, check out the starcaliber stitching of Tamara’s Radiant Maple on page 30!

ZOOM IN A closer look at the quilt reveals the matchstick level of close line quilting.

Celebrating Sewing and Quilting in Canada

The story behind the Canada 150 design The expectations for a commemorative sewing machine were many: create a design worthy of celebrating Canada’s 150; share part of the proceeds of the sale with Canada’s quilting associations (CQA and CQ) and make the design an integral part of a selection of free projects to share with sewists everywhere! Answering the call? Tamara Kate’s joyful design for her signature edition of the M100. From Tamara: The Janome Canada 150 logo celebrates the beauty and diversity of our nations peoples, cultures, landscape and wildlife. It is deliberately vibrant, colourful and multi-faceted. Quilters will particularly appreciate the design for its graphic nature which is meant to inspire creativity. The machine design inspired the Oh! Canada cushion project (Page 6) and the quilt, displayed at Quilt Canada 2017.

The Oh Canada! Cushion

Tamara Kate

A paper pieced pattern, inspired by the Canada 150 sewing machine, is reminiscent of a traditional fan pattern with a twist. Using the pattern once makes a great cushion cover or try repeating the blocks for a table runner. What is paper piecing?

Maker Profile

Foundation paper piecing (FPP) is a great way to piece intricate designs without precisely pre-cutting fabrics. Crisp points and dynamic patterns can be achieved with the help of patterns printed on paper, overlaid with fabric and then flipping, sewing and repeating until a block is finished. Jeannie Jenkins specializes in paper piecing. She offered a few tips during her pop-up lecture at Quilt Canada: TIP 1 Shorten the stitch on your sewing machine to 15-18 stitches per inch. TIP 2

Sew on the printed lines and you will be successful.

TIP 3 Rough cut your shapes approximately 1/2" larger than the finished shape should be. TIP 4 Using an Add A Quarter ruler makes trimming your 1/4" seam allowance a breeze. TIP 5 A seam roller is also a great tool for pressing your seams as you go. TIP 6 When paper piecing patterns, number the shapes in the order you are to piece them. Follow that order and you will be successful. TIP 7 Leave the paper in your project until all of the blocks are joined together. TIP 8 If you have a lot of bias edges on the outer blocks in your quilt, sew a seam 1/8" from the edge of the quilt all the way around to stabilize before pulling the paper out.

Jeannie Jenkins I learned to sew when I was 7 years old and began making my own clothes at age 10. Sewing has always been part of my life. After a year in a Fashion Design program, I changed direction slightly and took 3 years at O.C.A.D. graduating in 1982 with a design degree. I have been teaching quilting for more than 25 years and I speak at guilds all over Southern Ontario hoping to inspire and encourage both beginner and more advanced quilters. If I could sew all day every day I would be one happy girl! One can dream. You can find me on instagram as itchn2stitch. ------

PLACEMATS

HOW TO Visit ThreadRidingHood.com for Sherri’s step by step tutorial.

DETAILS COUNT Little touches like the Maple Leaf tab give these placemats professional polish.

Maker Profile

APPLIQUÉ The appliqué stitch can be used on the maple motif or to accent each coordinating serviette.

Sherri Sylvester

Sherri learned to love sewing at a young age. When her oldest was born, this love got a bit out of control, in a good way! She writes from Ontario, Canada and has been blogging and creating tutorials at Thread Riding Hood since 2012.

Celebrating Sewing and Quilting in Canada

Fold–N-Go Pocket Placemats Sherri Sylvester Make any meal special with boldly stitched placemats that take on the look of a fashionable, button-closed clutch. Highly defined quilt lines on neutral fabric make a strong statement alongside the appliquéd half maple leaf. This small scale quilting project provides a great opportunity to try out the Janome Quilt Binder and the finished set makes a great gift.

Maple Leaf Tab on Leather Mini Lesson Finishing touches can add a level of detail to take your project to the next level. The built-in maple leaf stitch on the Skyline S9 provided the perfect opportunity for this designer detail. Skyline S9

THE STITCH Select a stand alone stitch to create your tab on lightweight leather, vinyl or twill.

THE FOOT If using leather or vinyl, consider Janome’s ultraglide foot for stitching sticky fabrics.

LOCK IT IN Activate the stitch lock function to stitch only one full stitch and tie it off.

BIND IT Trim around the stitch motif, leaving a generous bit of fabric below the stitch and capture this in the binding of the placemat.

PLACEMATS

Free Motion Options from Janome When it comes to free motion sewing, various accessory feet options offer different ways to get the job done. From high-loft batting quilts to working with textured fabrics, sometimes you will find your thread and quilting materials seem to work better with one foot over another. Some of these options have been reviewed on the Janome Life blog.

THE DARNING FOOT (HOPPING FOOT) Available in open and closed toe options, this hopper style foot applies brief pressure during the stitch formation.

THE CONVERTIBLE SET The three options in this set include open and closed toe and the clearview foot for precision echo quilting around a motif.

Celebrating Sewing and Quilting in Canada

FREE MOTION COUCHING SET For adding decorative couched fibers of different thicknesses to free motion sewing.

BLUE DOT FREE MOTION BOBBIN HOLDER Pre-set to lower tension, this specialty bobbin holder reduces thread eyelashing and is also great for creating the hand look quilt stitch.

Luncheon Placemat Stitching Kim Jamieson-Hirst

Maker Profile

Take a relaxed approach to finishing up a set of placemats while you make the most of your decorative stitches and add just a touch of free motion work. Kim likes to finish projects with a turned edge (known as ‘pillowcase’ or mock-binding finished edge. "I like to stitch inside the edges of my projects to mimic binding. I used a removable pen to draw a line 3/8” in from all edges. This was the guide that I used for the “binding” stitching. I used the Janome Horizon Memory Crafts 8900 QCP’s stitch #257 (maple leaf) to stitch along this drawn line all around the outer edge of the placemat. I flipped the stitches horizontally so that the maple leaves would point towards the centre of the placemat. Once completed, I erased the drawn line."

Coming Soon - Luncheon Placemat Instructions

Kim Jamieson-Hirst Kim has an extensive YouTube channel where she shares videos about quilting, vintage sewing machines and book reviews. Join Kim in the One World Quilt Along where she will be demonstrating digital appliqué using the Artistic Edge. She has been designing quilts, hand embroidery and soft toy patterns for Chatterbox Quilts since 2008. Follow her YouTube channel for her latest tutorials. ------

THE SWIRL STITCH used along the seam line, the swirl stitch is also reflected in the free motion motif used across the body of the placemat.

THE MAPLE LEAF STITCH Finishing the turned edges of the placemat, the maple leaf stitch reflects the appliqué motif.

FUN AND GAMES

Quilted Target Toss Trina Gallop Take fun on the go wherever you are with this quilted make and take game that can be played by all ages. This project can be easily customized to suit your favourite game lover. Simply stitched bean bags are perfect for tossing, or try rubber balls for a no sew solution. SHE SHOOTS, SHE SCORES Change up the skill level of this game by alternating the sizes of the holes and how far back players toss from.

Maker Profile

Trina Gallop

ADD PERSONALITY Using the appliqué stitch on your Janome sewing machine, personalize your Quilty Target Toss so it is perfectly suited to the recipient.

Trina is a shoe-lover, cake baker, sewing enthusiast, avid knitter, basset wrangler, and half-marathon runner. She shares all this and more over at her lifestyle blog Will Cook for Shoes. Ever since she can remember, Trina's been one of those people who sees something and goes, "I can make that!" – and then usually does. When she's not sewing, knitting, or baking for other people, you will find Trina hanging out with her two sweet Basset Hound boys (Buster and Baxter) and her husband Matt, in their home in Winnipeg, Manitoba. ------

REST OR PLAY The fun doesn't stop when the game is over. This project doubles as a picnic blanket to refuel and rest upon (pets always love a good quilt too!)

FUN AND GAMES

Beach Blanket Sampler

Micheal Smith

With so many techniques to try using our machines, we often lack projects to capture them all. This “beach casual” sampler is designed to be a blank canvas, without demands for perfection. Use it to pull together assorted fabrics and test out new skills. Piecing and couching are typically done on the sewing machine, but can be serged. Random blocks are embroidered with AcuFil™ quilting and picnicfriendly designs. If you have test stitch outs or quilt blocks on hand this blanket is a great place to make use of them.

CLASP STITCHING The checkerboard is quickly quilted with machine-stitched clasp stitches and trimmed with a border of couched fibers (details page 20).

SCRAP BAG Leftover fabric bits are pieced together to hold the lightweight checkers (sliced pool noodles).

Celebrating Sewing and Quilting in Canada

EMBROIDERY Label the game piece tote or personalize the bag with an embroidery (done on the MC 15000 with variegated thread).

Serger + Embroidery Machine = Quilt

Maker Profile

Stippling and quilting in the ditch were sidelined for this project in order to make time for building serger skills. Rather than piecing blocks, embroidery was used on assorted solid coloured squares. Blocks were joined using a serger. COMPACT BUT POWERFUL Janome sergers can easily accommodate the extra thickness of bulky fabrics, or in this case, multiple layers. Four layers of fabric and 2 layers of batting are trimmed and stitched for this quilt.

MIX AND MATCH THREADS With a project as fun as this, why use all the same matching thread? Mix it up – and use it up by raiding your thread stash to use a different colour in each needle and each looper.

DESIGNER TIP When serging, use clips instead of pins. You’ll be more conscious to remove them and less likely to run over them!! You don’t want to sew over clips or pins while serging, especially when the knife blade is engaged.

Michael Smith From an early age, Michael expressed his creativity, imagination and flair for design Following two diplomas in Fashion Design, his career path took a detour when he discovered his passion for quilting. In addition to being an Educator for Janome, Michael operates a longarm quilting business (The Sewcial Quilter) from his home studio. Often described as “a social butterfly”, Michael is excited to travel as a member of the Janome family in order to share his love of all things sewing, quilting and creating. www.thesewcialquilter.ca -----

Couching with a Serger

1 Janome sergers use a variety of specialty presser feet available from your dealer. I used the Beading foot, which has a groove at the side to allow for beads, or in this case, yarn, to feed through while being stitched to the edge of the quilt.

Micheal Smith

4 Position the fabric under the foot and serge.

7 Couching corners on a serger are easily done. Gently pulling a little slack in the thread below the tension discs will allow you to pivot the fabric and get a nice sharp corner.

5 Lay the ball of yarn next to the 2 Raise the foot and lay the yarn in the groove of the foot. You may also want to lower the knife blade.

machine with a good deal of slack lying in your lap so the yarn will feed evenly without pulling or stretching. Cut the yarn at the end of the seam.

8 The Beach Blanket Sampler is a great canvas for trying new techniques. If you don’t want to couch with a serger, why not try using the Janome Beading foot or the Free motion couching foot instead?

3 Set for a longer stitch length by turning the upper knob, conveniently located on the right-hand side of the machine, to 4.5 or 5. This, in part, will be determined by the thickness of the yarn used. The chunkier the yarn, the longer the stitch length should be.

6 One method to finish the seam is to use a darning needle, bodkin or any needle with a wide-eye to thread the chain of threads into the existing line of stitches to bury and secure the thread ends.

Canada 150 Stamp Quilt (The Selfie Quilt) Tania Denyer When Tania joined the Janome Design Team, her first thought on contributing a Canada 150 project was that it had to be something truly commemorative, and in our country, that is often an “official” stamp or coin. So, why not create a stamp quilt that could serve as a backdrop for your own year of celebration? Capture family photos at your 2017 reunions or holiday celebrations. They’re sure to be collectors items! Tania has a unique take on quilt design that simplifies images to their core elements and her 150 Stamp is no exception. The strong graphic of the deckled stamp edge motif is created with the addition of fused black half circles around the perimeter of the stamp. Simply brilliant. CANADA 150 STAMP QUILT INSTRUCTIONS

Pillow Case Dress Liz Thompson

Pillowcase dresses are a great way to outfit your little one in a special new dress made just for her. It’s also a great opportunity to include a band of a favourite fabric. In this case, we used Tamara Kate’s ABC Nature Walk from Michael Miller. The letter ‘B’ was appliquéd using decorative stitches with a variegated thread. The construction of the dress consists of side seams, a hem and drawstring casing along the top. You can find more information here.

I have been creating since before creating was cool... sewing, drawing, designing, quilting... my curious mind always looking to try something new. I designed my first dress at 16 and have not wasted a moment since. I don't let "can't" stop me, no matter whether it works out or not, I will have learned something! I truly believe we are creative beings and sometimes all that is needed is a kind heart and a hand to help you along your way. Go out, look around, make what you see and share it with others... I think these are the keys to happiness. Look... make... share and be happy. ------

The Quilt Canada 2017 Janome booth was a hive of activity with pop up lectures from some of Canada’s most notable quilters. Quilt Canada guests were treated to behind-the–scenes looks at how designers make their quilts and express their ideas.

LIBS ELLIOTT shared her secrets to creating modern designs with a traditional twist. She works with a limited number of block designs and colours, but rotates the blocks and uses negative space to create unexpected shapes and designs. You can see more of Libs work and her Canada 150 design for Absolute.

MELISSA MARGINET specializes in walking foot quilting and Janome is proud to sponsor the second printing of her book Walking Foot Quilting Design. LAST COUNT, 2614 AND GROWING! Janome is proud to be one of the sponsors of Quilt Canada’s Big Quilt Bee, with a goal of supplying Ronald McDonald house with 1000 comfort quilts for kids. Janome educator, Michael Smith brought home an armload of quilts to quilt and happily delivered them to coordinator Laine Canivet and CQA president, Leslie Whitby. The outpouring of quilt love put the quilt bee over the top.
