The first impression of the present courtyard was that it is a patchwork of different buildings that not really interact with each other. To enhance the feeling of the patchwork but to improve the social life of the courtyard i introduced a new structure to it which has 2 different functions: First of all it adds new functions to the university. But then it also structures the space into different social areas with varying levels of privacy. It also opens up the whole courtyard to the public to share its new infastructure not only but mostly with the other students of the city. Since an architecture school has a huge potential of handy and motivated people the construction was ment to be as simple as possible so the students could participate in the building of the new structure. This does on the side make it cheaper to build and on the other it strengthens the social structure of the courtyard.

The new structure connects with the old one very close. It always uses an existing wall to add up to the whole patchwork of the courtyard. In three situations there is a physical connection between the old and the new. In all three of them there is a little height difference that has to be overcome. But like this the new functions can add up seamlessly into the normal usage of the university.

p u b l i c - s p a c e The strucutre divides the space of the courtyard in different smaller entities with different levels of privacy. This is done to meet all the diffferent needs the students and other users of the courtyard have. So there are very private spaces like the area for urban gardenining. But also very public areas like the sculpture garden located right on the street connected to the little gallery. Inbetween these two extremes there is a semi public terasse for the restaurant adition, a space between the old building A and B which is mainly dedicated for movement of people and cars. And there is the heart of social life of the courtyard, a semi private space right in the middle surrounded by the structure offering places to rest and mostly giving the courtyard the possibility to connect people and create a vivid social life which hasn‘t been there before.

f u n c t i o n s In order to improve the social life on the campus but also to meet the needs of the university the new structure brings different functions to the courtyard. Those could be divided in 2 main categories: social and functional. On the social side there are a cafe with its own greenhouse, a gallery where students can exhibit their work, a social space with a little kitchen and an addition to the existing restaurant. The functional additions are a building with several Studios in different sizes, a library extension, office spaces, a material shop and an event space that can be rented or used by the students themselves. All these new functions enhance not only the quality of learning and working but most of all the social life and engagement of the students.

c o n s t r u c t i o n The construction of the structure is very simple. It is made up of wood and has the follwing dimensions: columns: 22x22, primary beams: 20x11 and secondary beams: 20x8. The joints are made with just three different steel elements. The ceiling has the the following layers: fermacell gibson fiber (20mm), OSB (18mm), ballast filling (104mm), insulation (40mm) and wooden flooring (18mm) The facade is made of polycarbonate panels (50mm). The polycarbonate is either transparent or translucent depending on the required privacy.

d e v e l o p m e n t Since the the proposal is a flexible structure it can evolve in time. This gives the possibility to the university to start of with a small change and add more parts of the structure as time passes. Also money wise it is an advantage if you don’t have to build the whole structure at ones but entity by entity. So there could be only the small student cafe in the beginning. Then more and more buildings could follow. And in the case the university gets more and more students the structure could even spread to other places surrounding the university.
