PROJECT: Transitional Space of Metro Station for CHANEL CLASSIFICATION: Exhibition Design PERIOD: Junior DESIGNER: Zhiyuan Cheng Hankang Jin TUTOR: Mingqiu Du DURATION: Sep, 2011-Oct, 2011 About the Project This piece of design work locates in the transitional space in the metro station. From the beginning, we focus on the contradictions between a crowd of flowing people and a stationary exhibition display. Fortunately, we have the choice to decide the content to show. CHANEL is the brand that we choose eventually. Therefore, it is a journey to discover the best solution for CHANEL to exhibit in a transitional space in metro station generally.

It is a space for CHANEL N°5. But, let us start without N°5. The following is all this project about: The unpredictable process is far more intriguing than the result. We love the process intrinsically. This section reveals the dilemma we choose at the beginning. In fact, When we finish this project, we find there are two valuable things. First is the absolutely rational method in design. Second is the choice we start with. An Actor or a Film The argument that we should start the design with the location or the content comes at the first round with the situation that both the location from more than thirty transitional space of metro stations in Shanghai and the content to be shown are undetermined, so which one should we start with? If you find an excellent actor, then you make a film for him. Otherwise, you find a proper actor for your favorite film. Cape of Good Hope! In light of this, the majority solved problem by following instructions. On the contrary, we ruminated the instructions every now and then, and found the third way to solve this arduous task through the thinking of the characteristic we would like to reveal to passersby. The answer was to design a kind of feeling experience. Among the five kinds of feeling method we chosen Smell and deemed the perfume as our paramount choice. As a result, the CHANEL came into our view in that CHANEL No.5 was one of the most famous perfumes in the world. The Film for Actress Here is the time for a nice spot. With the goal to figure out the most appropriate location for showing the CHANEL No.5, we visited all of the transitional space of metro stations in Shanghai analyzed the abundant data we collect. Eventually, one with an intriguing variety in space construction came into our view: Changshu Road Station. That is it!
CHANEL and Coco Chanel (Content from internet) CHANEL: From the little black dress to the tweed suit, the quilted handbag to the two-tone shoe and camellia brooch, the perfect red lipstick and the world’s best-selling fragrance N°5, the list of CHANEL’s innovations is unparalleled. CHANEL has continued this glorious heritage of creation, playing fearlessly with Coco’s radical legacy, offering a vision for the future of the House that is as memorable as its past. Coco Chanel: Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, Coco Chanel’s real name, was born in 1883 in Saumur. Of humble origins, the daughter of a traveling salesman and a seamstress, quickly lost her mother and abandoned by her father, is raised in an .......
The Rational Inspection Report of CHANEL N°5: Simple: The fact that Coco Chanel is influenced by the Cubism and Modernism provides the evidence for anti-decoration and simple in design. Self: One quote from Coco Chanel is “The most courageous act is still to think for yourself, aloud.” What we can learn from it, is to have a discourse with our inter-self. Black & White: Most products of CHANEL are built in black and white. Among both cloths and jewelry or the package of the products, we know that usually the surface was white and the edge was black. It also works for the package of CHANEL N°5. Bevel & Flat: From the CHANEL N°5, we found the masculine-looking bottle was given a bevel cut both in body of the bottle and the stopper. Meanwhile, the flat surface of the bottle reflects the influence of Modernism. Smell: The head part smell of CHANEL N°5 is much stronger and more inspiring than the base part. The interpretation is to shock you at the first smell, and then leaves you with the delusion to meet again.

To Remember CHANEL N°5: In order to help the passing visitors remember the CHANEL N°5, we would like not only to use the elements of CHANEL N°5 to build the consensus, such as the main style of anti-decoration, the hue of black and white within the space, but also rebuilt a process of the walking experience just like the fragrance flowing out of the bottle.

To Meet by Chance: To create the discourse in the way using the tiny reflection surface to mirror visitor themselves we provide the passersby with the opportunity to find themselves. (Right)

From the picture,it is easy to find out that the crowd density of the inner and median is much higher than the outer because people like to take the shortcut. The result of this analyse make us put more screens in the outer of the wall and fill the outer with "Chanel" wall in order to make the space more consecutive.

Why Changshu Road Station? The Changshu road station is a transitional station that connects Line1 and Line7. The station lies in the downtown. Due to the specific condition, the transitional space was divided into two main spaces. First part, narrow, long and circuitous, begins with Line1. Second part begins with Line7, On the contrary, the space of this part is giant and high. We deem the dramatic comparison of this space is absolutely superior for CHANEL N°5.

A Rational Calculator A new method in design we created was called absolutely rational orientation of design. The essence of this method was to find out the each evidence supported your design behavior respectively. For instance, I need to keep in mind the paramount color used by CHANEL is black and white before determining black and white as my vital hue in this space. Every single factor ordered. However, for this rational oriented method, the feasibility remains uncertain. Even though, we still deem this method as an experiment to explore the unknown.

The Black Pipe Lines: The flowing black pipe lines are throughout whole space. Within the narrow space, the black pipe was adhered to the flat surface rationally. However, they burst out in the giant space, and eventually join into the central logo of CHANEL. The latter part, we deem the one perceptual. (Above) The Entrance: The logo floating in the air is holographic mixed with water-mist. In light of this, we want to give the first shock to the passages like the smell of CHANEL N°5. (Right)

HI, YOU ARE INVITED TO ART COLLECTION GALLERY, LET’S ARTTING !!! ART GALLERY DESIGN In the Advent of Gallery At the beginning, there were abundant choices of function we could make within this space . However, with the special interest in art and the experience of being an assistant in gallery, II deemed the art gallery as my vital choice at the starting of design. The content exhibited most likely to be the painting and installation. All for Communication The essence of art gallery was communication. Unfortunately, the base included two floors which meant the scarcity in communication normally. So how could II reconnect the possibility in communication between them? Interior Courtyard To solve the problem, I punched the central area of thesecond floor. The result of this approach we chose was a courtyard which provided the possibility in communication with a dramatic way and architectural meaning.
PROJECT: Art Gallery Design CLASSIFICATION: Club Design PERIOD: Junior DESIGNER: Zhiyuan Cheng TUTOR: Anlin Chen DURATION: Mar, 2012-Apr, 2012
About the Project This project was an individual work. The base was a small coffee´ of our tutor’s friend. The syllabus from department shown a formal club was required for this course. However, our tutor deemed that it is hard to arrange a large-scale area with elaborate ornament. As a result, she suggested with a small and detail-considered space instead.
Layout of First and Second Floor
Function of Space The fundamental usage of this space is to exhibit and communicate. To guarantee the demand of exhibition, we use mini-scale installation or objects settled on first floor, and majority paintings for the second floor to display. To separate content made the positive impact on both concentration in viewing and provided the possibility for two artistic works exhibited at the same time. To guarantee the demand of communication, I took the research over several art gallery opening events Unlike the business conference in the meeting room, I found out the communication existed quite informally in the art gallery. As a consequence, the seats were settled in scatteration. What’s more, the space around the central installation was also could be used for rest and communication.
Rest Exhibit Traffic Install Store Toilet
Streamline Design Within the space, some people walk around and some keep staying in front of a masterpiece. So it is my duty to arrange the relationship between them. As you can see from the picture, I put the motional streamline around central installation, thus all the art works were moved to the sides of the wall. Meanwhile, next to the windows in north and south, I put the chairs and tables, since it is a wonderful place for people who want to a cup of coffee and chat with someone else. Nonetheless, the gallery also provides seats within the motional areas for the people who want to take a short break.

CONTENTS
Courtyard Design As I mentioned above, the courtyard was a vital place which provided the possibility in communication for both floors. I would like to say the central installation played a role in environmental information accumulator. Except the installation, I enlarged the courtyard by eliminating some pieces of central walls.
Entrance Design Lighting Design Courtyard Design Exhibition Desk Design Facade Design Roof Design
Entrance Design The entrance was a limited space, while stepped a little further, and the sight of view will enlarge. The color of entrance in use was oriented by the common design which will be introduced in the coming chapters. Lighting Design There were three types of lighting. First was the whole area of the second floor roof, the thousands of lighted pipe lines. Second was the spotlights for specific paintings. Third was the droplight above the coffee desks next to the windows.
Exhibition Desk Design The exhibition desk was made for exploring the mini installations and artificial works. To promote the beauty of exhibition desk, one was connected from floor to the roof, meanwhile, the texture in use for the base of desk was equal to the wall on the first floor. The strip of lights hidden in the bottom not only provided the location of desk but also was elegant to see.
Facade Design The facade of building was almost considered at the beginning of the project. The concept was to put the graphical Logo on the major areas of the front window, which not only made the uniqueness of the facade, but also conveyed the brand positively. What’s more, the front windows with a black boundary could be interpreted as a frame of the facade, which can be imagined as a painting with a black frame.
Roof Design The roof was imagined as a surface and considered as an installation and lighting device. The basic form of roof should be like a thousands of pipe lines flowing in the air, once they were lighted. With the concept, I tested the effect on the software for nearly two weeks before I confirmed the final solution. Eventually, I choose the plastic as the texture of pipe lines, which seemed more light and transparent.

General Design With no doubt, the general design is considered as a vital part in this design project.. However it was never be thought of at the beginning of design, but formatted in a spontaneous way. The reason why those contents in the picture are shown in red came from the progress of designing central strip at first. After adding the red color on the central strip, I was thinking about adding the same color on other objects like desk, lights or the handrail. As a consequence, I found the unity of the space was enhanced. Since those grant companies do have the criterion color for their visual identity, I determined it was the right way to do so. This general design will impact on both the space elements and graphical propaganda.
The Presentation of General Design The same as the principle of graphic, dot, line and surface, there were three ways in presentation of general design. The surface referred to the central strip, the line meant the handrail, the boundary of desk or the edge of front windows. Finally, the dots could be found on the roof, under the each pipe line, but with a low density.
Material in Use To consider the reality of materiel in use, the most of them were easy to find. The acrylic panel was used as the circle panel in the central of the space, the pipe lines on the roof was made of PVC plastic line. Some walls were made of mosaic brick, the ground was made of epoxy resin in order to create the blurred reflection.
The Visual Identity Design The visual identity was in used in this design project. After the general design in space was considered, I started to focus on the visual identity on graphic, which included the Logo of this space, the fictitious poster and all the imagined stationeries.

3M-FACTORY What is the “3m-factory”? The name of “3m-factory” is short for 3 meters factory. That means I have to show an entire factory in a tiny space with 3 meters long and 3 meter wide.
So why would you like to show the factory but not the products? On the notebook, I replied with the statements as follows: The factory is not only the fundamental basement for any products. , but also the significant factor which few design companies had like Nine-o-clock.

PROJECT: Nineoclock Exhibition Space for Shanghai Design Biennale CLASSIFICATION: Exhibition Design PERIOD: Junior DESIGNER: Zhiyuan Cheng TUTOR: N/A DURATION: Jul, 2012-Aug, 2012 About the Project This project was designed for Nine-o-clock, a hand-made furniture company, whose plan was to attend Shanghai biennale in 2012 to show their excellent furniture products. The significant characteristic of this company was a thousand square of historical-looking factory-workshop they had, a real and archaic factory-workshop. So from the start, what I was thought crucially was how to rebuild this sensitive workshop to an exhibition space with three meter long.
The factory
Hand-made
How to build the “3m-factory”? With the determined concept to convey the factory. I started to pay more attention to methods. The first way in conveying factory was to project a wide-view of interior factory on the display wall with the products settled in front of them. However, this proposal was rejected because the displaying picture on the wall may confess the viewing experience of the visitors. Then, an alternative plan took place. This plan was evoked by a garage place in factory where settled abundant steels within each cube-like frame regularly. As a consequence, I viewed this frame as the display desk for the products. Meanwhile, in this space, the standing frame with products held is the only thing that you can find. In this case, the confusion disappeared completely.

About the Project This hotel design started as I was a junior. I designed this hotel with my partner Jin. The hotel was totally a mixture of old and new, in other words, the tradition and modern. As we wanted to figure out the solutions in integrating these two contradictory elements, we could hardly finish the work within three weeks. Eventually, we decided to continue. Till now, we are still in designing this hotel, which has been regarded as our graduation design already.

ROAMING IN THE POETRY Introduction This project as a starred hotel locates in Zhejiang province, and it is no doubt that the gigantic space is a huge challenge for us. We deem the W-Hotel as our target. The element we would like to squeeze into W-Hotel is the modernism. Then considering the location, we add the culture of Jiangnan as the element of tradition. The W-Hotel is a perfect combination of Modernism and Tradition.
RESEARCH: Modern W
About W-Hotel (From the internet) W-Hotels is Starwood’s luxury boutique hotel brand, generally marketed towards a younger crowd. It was launched in 1998 with the W New York, a conversion of the old Doral Inn hotel at 541 Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. The first few W-hotels were mainly conversions of existing hotels already within the Starwood group. The brand has since expanded with over fifty hotels and resorts around the world.
W-Hotel Analysis These points were extracted from W-Hotel, as the elements which we could rely on while design. W-Hotel Analysis

The secrets of ancient landscape paintings (AC 581) Three types of Yuan: According to an ancient book written by Xi-Guo, a famous traditional Sansui painter ,mountains have three types of Yuan : The first is called Gao-yuan, which means the height, the vision is from the piedmont to the mountaintop; The second is called Shen-Yuan, which means the depth, the vision is from the mountain front to the mountain beyond; and the third is called Ping-Yuan, which means the length, the vision is from the nearby mountain to the distant.

Gao-Yuan
Shen-Yuan
“Scenery of Road Shu” by Shicheng Xie
“Scenery of snow mountain” by Zhou Shen
“Zhubajie disorganize the feast” anonymous
With the mountains upwardly conglutinate with each other, the roads are fading in and out, and are extruded from the sides to the centre which is left for a conceptual ravine to fit the ascending mountain. Here the height completely becomes the ascending mountain. The painter changed the invisible deep into the vertically ascending mountain. The process of Gao-Yuan is also the process of narrative. What they painted is time.
The horizontal extension, just likes the narrative mode of films, connects the front and back in an inconspicuous way. The painter used some referents to explain the relationship between upper and lower. The painter used some huge rocks to cut and organize the whole picture: dividing the relation of front and back, left and right. The mountain rocks sometimes are so far that it’s hardly to see them, but sometime they are so close that you may generate the illusion that you can even touch it.
The various layers are correlated together. Among them are many other objects to display the abundant layers. Here the quantity of layer is the standard to judge the depth and the volume of the space. Because the way of watching it is different from Gao-yuan and Ping-yuan, which are more like snooping. The effect of Shen-yuan is always amazing.

RESEARCH: Traditional Culture of Jiang-nan Sub Topic II
Sub Topic III
The research in Suzhou Garden (AC 1509)
The research in Suzhou Museum (AC 2006)
The most representative project in the culture of Jiangnan is the classic Chinese garden, which is well-known for its picturesque landscape and rich historical and cultural heritage because almost all of them were designed by knowledgeable scholars. So this time we went to Suzhou which is famous for the classic ancient garden in order to observe the traditional life-style of the ancients and the thought of design for these incomparable masterpieces. Because of this journey, we basically comprehend the traditional design methods from the analysis of details and parts in several typical gardens in this city with profound culture.
Courtyard: The essence here we would like to explore is the Shen-Yuan which mentioned in previous chapter as one of the vital elements in the ancient landscape paintings has been used within the garden. Please focus on the variety in layers of content.
Entrance: Totally different from European landscapes, the connotation is chinese landscapes strongly stand for. The entrance with two circle doors show the intention which avoiding you from entering too rapid. It is like roaming in the poetry.
Sky-Windows: This draft on the left side shows the sky-window opened upon the roof, in that keeps the intact of the roof and introduces the nature light into the interior space. The right draft shows the variety in relationship within walls.
Combining modernism and tradition, the new Suzhou museum is a successful case designed by I.M.Pei, a master of contemporary architecture who is familiar with the processing mode between modernism and tradition. We determinately considered that we could acquire some ways to handle these two kinds of design styles from it.
Flake of Stone: This is a splendid part in the central open garden of Suzhou museum. The traditional landscape panting was skillfully transformed into spatial form. The terrace where we stand display as the foreground, the lake and the lounge bridge are the middle shots, the flake-like mountains are the long shots and the white wall serves as the background. We are considering to use such wonderful method for disposing the relation in the interior space.

STAGE OF DESIGN Wheels Entry (Lobby) STAGE I The most representative project in the culture of Jiangnan is the classic Chinese garden, which is well-known for its picturesque landscape and rich historical and cultural heritage because almost all of them were designed by knowledgeable scholars. STAGE II To develop the theme of Jiangnan, we introduced a method which divides the wall into two parts: the outside one maintains the purity, while the inside one includes abundance of details likes traditional textures or variety in lighting. In light of this, the comparison within the wall has strictly enhanced. As a consequence, to discovery the essence of the Jiangnan has been proved. To be continued, what we are going to do then is discussing the proper materials which should be used within the inner wall. Meanwhile, the lighting design is also a vital issue that we should focus on.
Living Room (Lobby Bar) STAGE I The theme of the living room is water. The paramount idea is to create a mountain! As you can see from the draft and visualization, the motivation to design the mountain-like triangular glass wall is obvious and direct. Besides the mountain built, we introduced the outside water into the interior space by building an isolated inner lake next to the seats of the coffee bar.
Left: The visualization of mountain-like triangular glass wall. Middle: The layout of the living room. Right: Absolutely horizontal level between the outside water and interior ground.
STAGE II For the beginning of Senior when we stared to re-design of the W-Hotel, the first major change is the odd triangular glass wall of the living room that was replaced by using the pure vertical flakes of glass. The second major change is the lineal path from outside of the hotel to the inner restaurant on the second floor.

STAGE OF DESIGN Entrance STAGE I For the entrance of the traditional Chinese garden prohibits the eyesight from looking though the interior directly, a sense of mystery emerged. It reflects the connotation of the ancient wise man perfectly. On account of this, we use the mountain-like triangular panels covering on the surface and leave a circuitous path for visitors to walk though. For the original concept of entrance, we merge the flat panel with folded bevel and the shape of mountain which refer to the modern and tradition of Jiang-nan respectively. To enhance the visual impact, we contract the boundary behind the front wall next to the each side of the entrance, to create the illusion that the entrance grows from the building.
STAGE II To criticize designing in form-oriented especially for triangular mountain-like panels and glasses of the entrance and the curtain wall in the living room, we determined that the connotation is what we should learn from. For the entrance, we increased the odd shapes and used a union flat wall instead. In front of the wall, there are pieces of mountain-like stones in a flake shape with the vegetation merged, while the gigantic logo of W stands upon the micro landscape. The parking lot appears behind the wall.
Cafeteria STAGE I The theme of this area is rain. Because of the complexity in other spaces of the hotel, we supposed to design the cafeteria with a simple style in order to give the gigantic space a visual rhythm. At first, we wanted to use some metal vertical curves which mean the falling rain to break up the space, and reduce the luminance of the space and use the globular light which means the moon to create a somber atmosphere just like the raining night. But then we considered such style did not quite fit the cafeteria and need to think out a new way.
STAGE II How such a modern space blends into an ancient traditional culture is an indispensable question we need to solve. We want to concentrate the classic garden in such interior space. It’s not so good if one can look straight thought the space when he just enters. So we need to put something to obscure vision. Based on the analysis, we found bamboo curtain can keep the privacy and transparency of every part in cafeteria; meanwhile, it also protects the completeness within this space. We set two entrances: the first for adjusting the mental status because we want the guests to be tranquil and peaceful; the second is the real one which leads to the dining area. These two entrances are connected with a serene pathway. In front of the second entrance, we set two shallow pools with figure of Buddha and lotus. The guests can see such peaceful scene before having dinner. In the sidewall of the interior which has an array of cases with different Buddhas, we want show the guests a incomparably grandiose and silent scene.
Roof Landscape STAGE I The micro landscape locates in the roof regarded as a pure place for meditation at the beginning. The fundamental materials could be white wall, pieces of stone, vegetation, waters and sand road. However, the traditional materials reflect the modern genre. The functionality includes coffee bar and water-poor. For the roof which made of traditional tiles, however, to release the form of the roof in that makes the possibility for visitors who stand in front of the entrance and viewing the roof that shows a mountain-like skyline. it is the way that we create the mountain on the roof.

STAGE OF DESIGN Rooms
STAGE I About the guest room, we intend not only to setup a place with a high-quality service and comfort, but also to create a wonderful place that could connect the relation between modern and tradition, which can recall the unforgettable memory in the traditional residence, meanwhile, with high-comfort and high-tech modern elements, which can make the period in guestroom much more convenient and comfortable. There were always three parts in the traditional house: entrance, public area and private area. We use the method which is always used in the entrance of ancient traditional residence to add spatial richness in guest room. After that is the living room just like the public area for meeting with other people, such design can avoid disturbing the private activity. Eventually, the private area also consists of two parts: bedroom, balcony and washroom. The bedroom and balcony are separated by the TV wall, such thought also comes from the traditional residence which always use the furniture to separate the different part of the space. Right, what we try to do is to bring back the traditional living style into this fast and modern period.
W Store STAGE I W-store is a shopping center belonging to the W-hotel. Compared with the normal shopping mall, the W store locates in each W-hotel and provides specific stuff like items for daily use, gifts or artifacts, classified by women, men and kids.
The left draft shows the imagination of the W-store at beginning. I would like to explain it from two aspects. First, based on the abundance of stuffs sold within the W-store and the strict classification, I designed an open shelf with the clapboards set horizontally as the displaying desk for choosing stuffs by customers. Meanwhile, with the strips of light set behind the each of clapboards, the effect was determined to be phenomenal with a global viewing. Top: The research of traditional dwellings. Middle: The layout. Bottom: The visualization of living room.
Second, to represent the theme of Jiang-nan, I used the concept of “Deepness in Yuan”, which created the variety in layers within eye-sight. For the operation, I opened several holes on the shelves, where allowing the visitors could see each others by looking though the holes. In other words, you could understand the hole as a frame of the photo, a moving photo, in light of this, sometimes the photo is empty, sometimes the part of the visitor’s body bursts into the photo, or the eye-sights join within the hole, in that the variety of the relationship within the visitors has been created via the holes on the shelves.
Steak House STAGE I Have you ever imagined the grace and fragrance of the experience that were immersed in the wine? Actually, it’s the feeling we want to create. We are willing to endow every space a story about itself, the translucent arcshaped lounge, the fluctuant roof, even the dazzling light from it. We firmly believed that the wonderful experience come absolutely not only from your tongue, but also from your heart.

KEEP ROAMING General Invasion For the invasion, we added several new functional spaces within the W-Hotel, like the theatre and a swimming poor. Meanwhile, we would like to take care of the details of the spaces existed already, to select the proper materials and testify the lighting system. What’s more, for some of the specific space like cafeteria, we may design the system of visual identity for it. We have not accomplished this assignment by now, but generally, this project will be finished by May, 2013.

HIMALAYAS Concept The initial concept of this installation was the organism-like objects flowing in the air of lobby. While the gigantic objects may obstruct the sight view of the visitors, the further solution was to replace the objects with thousands of tiny single object. In other words, the abundance of tiny objects consist of the organism-like gigantic objects.
Design progress The main task i faced with in this project was laying on technology in building model. The software for modeling i used during this project included Cinema 4D and Rhino. Now, i would like to share the designing progress i experienced with you.

Modeling in the Rhino.
New Method of Modeling in Cinema 4D The limitation of modeling in Rhino was obvious. It was hardly re-modification and high-occupation in system memory. The alternative method came up with using the Cinema 4D.
I.Create a entity object
For Cinema 4D, once created the shaped polygon object and transformed it into the HyperNURBS. There were two factors that i can control the way of tiny object arraying. First is the Subdivision level, Here is the sample shows the transformation when the range of HyperNURBS moves from 1 to 3. Second is the Distribution Mode, You can choose from Edge, Vertex, Polygon Center, Surface and Volume. Here are the effects respectively.
II.calculating and drawing the contour lines Edge
III. Arraying tiny objects to each contour line Field Research The lobby of Jumeirah Himalayas Hotel is a space with 13-meter high, 6-meter wide and 20-meter long. The original building was designed by a rata isozaki.
This picture shows the entity organism-like objects was first settled into the lobby. However, the objects not only blocked the sight view, but also create the intangible pressure above the head of visitors.

To create an installation in the lobby was an arduous work i have never done before. To judge this project rationally, the most difficult thing is in building computer model. But for me, from the starting of concept to the visualization, the enhancing in computer skill was enormous.

PROJECT: PROJECT: Museum interior Design (6-Hours Quick Design) CLASSIFICATION: Museum Design PERIOD: Senior DESIGNER: Zhiyuan Cheng TUTOR: Mingqiu Du DURATION: Dec, 2012 About the Project This is a quick design lasts for 6 hours on a A1 paper, from the concept to the design. The base is an unadorned edifice of traditional chinese medicine museum in Anhui province. The functionality is exhibiting predominately, with the working space for the officers and the public leisure areas like coffee bar. Personally, I love the four courtyards the most in that not only I use the vertical stairs to link the two floors, but also the four of the stairs within whole building stand for an integrated existence which the visitors could recognize the stairs immediately and find their way.

STUDYING CENTER RENOVATION PROBLEMS
SOLUTION
Problems of the Base Here is the conclusion of the general problems we faced in the present.
For the Base First, Rearrange the number of classrooms in each floor by reducing the size of each classroom. Second: Move the student lockers to someplace else, and use glasses instead of walls to induce the nature lights. Third, To create an exhibition room and a storage room to show or store respectively. Forth. Re-tagerting the function of corridor and re-design. Fifth, To enlarge the size of washrooms and include both gender for each floor.
First, the usage of entirely classroom is queried. There are nearly 1/3 space without any function at rear of the each classroom while students sit in front normally. Second, the corridor between the two classrooms is dim and narrow due to the student lockers in corridor block the sunshine and reduce the space. Third, for the hand-made models or the display boards, they hardly have the place to be settled. Fourth, the long corridor for resting on the second floor to connect two buildings has seldom been used. Fifth, the washrooms separated by man and woman in different floors are not convenient for students.
For the Teaching Pattern Situation: From the freshman to the senior, the fundamental behavior of students within the classroom includes having lectures, drawing with the full-size paper, hand-made modeling, discussing the projects of groups, self-working with laptop. Example: For the most classrooms in western country, which are subject and functionality oriented. The students take the classes with different classroom, or choose workshop or library such specific function spaces they love to.
Problems of the Teaching Pattern First, the function within the classroom includes lectures drawing and modeling which is disordered. Second, the density in using rate of the classroom is low. Third, the variety of instruments settled within classrooms is chaotic. Fourth, it is hardly provides the self-learning mode within the classroom.
Solution: To provide there kinds of classrooms. First, the 4 lecture rooms for 24 students which specific holding the lectures. Second, the 3 half self-learning rooms for 25 students, include the drawing course supervised by instructors, or students self-learning. Third, the 1 workshop with a facility room for 56 students, which provides comprehensive learning includes hand-made or machanical modeling, computer using and drawing.

Layout Design and streamline analysis The studying areas locate in the left side of the main-stair. The lecture rooms and half self-learning room lay in the first floor, for the second floor, workshop and exhibition room settled there. The reason why lecture rooms and half self-learning room put into the first floor due to the high frequency in use for the students from the freshman to the junior. Public areas locates in the right side of the main-stair. Especially in the corner of the space which is easy to find and avoid confusion with the working space. Traffic areas includes two vertical stairs, two corridors across the studying spaces and a long corridor. The lineal traffic areas detach the studying areas and public areas perfectly.

PROJECT: A Crazy House CLASSIFICATION: Residential Design PERIOD: Sophomore DESIGNER: Zhiyuan Cheng TUTOR: Guhong Chen DURATION: Apr, 2011-May, 2012 About the Project This project is my first project of interior design in any real sense. Before as a sophomore, for a freshman in the college learns the fundamental knowledge and the basic drawing skill predominately. This project I focus on creating a comprehensive shape of living room mainly. The urgent need to express self. I use Rhino to model and associate with Vray to render.
For Parsons
Concept The concept of this design is simplest as to create a beauty, a beautiful flowing shape. Even there are some samples which i can learn from, however, the toughest challenge lies in the model. As I used the Rhino, the final visualization seems beautiful, on the contrary, I totally disagree that the project can be used for a real family in that the abstract shape and lacking in considering of details. But honestly, I regard this process of designing as a trail of the technology when I retrospected. And at that time, I wrote on the presentation to my self: I wish it will become a good start.
From China Academy of Art
A CRAZY HOUSE Living room The intention of the living room comes from the Cave restaurant in Australia. The regular shape of the Cave restaurant is audition oriented in that to create an absolute space of hearing while having the dinning. Unlike the cave restaurant, the regular shape transformed into the un-regular shape in my design work. However, i never think of considering of hearing experience at that stage, the only thing i care about is the shape. It seems shallow, but for true.
This hand-draft was the only one for this project that I could find now. From then on, I abandoned to drawing on the temporary papers, but a notebook instead.
This process shows my first trail on modeling irregular shape in Rhino. For today, I can easily handle it or provides more options on surface with Cinema 4D. However, to use Rhino on that day do cost my abundant of time, especially on learning and exploring.
The layout of the house

The Visualization, Rendered by Rhino with Vray
Kitchen The kitchen I wanted to create is a genre of modern with the stainless material for the operation panel. It is a dramatic comparison between the flowing roof made in wood and the stainless operation panel. For the kitchen-side of the roof, I collected the lineal flakes of roof into the top of the shelf upon the kitchen, as a consequence, the connection point of the roof and the kitchen are joined coherently.

HAND-MADE MODEL OF LOSONE’S HOUSE Architecture Analysis As you can see, the entire architecture appears with an absolute graphic. From the top-view, which you can see the main-enterance with a rectangular shape insert into the perfect circle. Besides beauty, the rectangle detaches the living spaces and the traffic areas perfectly. For the nature lighting, there are two vertical windows opened next to the stairs, which provide lights for stairs. The glass curtain walls were frequently used within the building. Meanwhile, the dam-boards were settled on each floors.
Interior Layout Analysis Due to the simplest graphic shape of circle and rectangle, the layout of interior space is strictly obvious. Traffic areas lay in the middle, both sides are living areas. For the first floor, we can see the facility room and storage room. The two bedrooms with bathroom, balcony and kitchen are locate on the second floor. Then, there is an inside duplex space connect with third and forth floor. The public balcony lies in forth floor, which shares a special circular hole upon the roof with the soft sunshine lights up the balcony.
Features of the model The astonishing feature of model is the method in displaying with the rotational floors, through this method, we can easily switch the status of the model between entirely opened and absolutely united. To realize it, we used a vertical axis as the central model rotation. What’s more, once the model entirely opened, to avoid the sinking of upper floors coursed by the gravity, we designed an interlayer which includes two flakes to maintain the stability of each floors by pressing from both sides, meanwhile, the floors can be rotated too. One more thing, to solve the problem that the curve wall can hardly build by brittle PVC-foam-board, we create the idea with cutting the lineal traces shallowly on the PVC-foam-board to against the self tension force while it curved.

The Concept of Finger Ring No.2 This finger-ring looks like a blooming flower upon the circle ring. Actually, for the fundamental concept, I would like to create an abstract shape which connects with the normal circle ring. As you can see, the transformation of the abstract part happens both horizontally and vertically. This is a product focused on shapes. However, as a starting of the designing product, there is more work need to be done.
Making Steps 1. To build a paper model 2. Unfold the paper model and paste it on the silver strip. 3. To cut the shape of paper model on silver strip by linear cutting. 4. Shaping the silver by hands. 5. Polishing

Digital or Film I got my first digital-camera as a reward of entering the college in 2009. However, I turned digital-camera into the film-camera shortly. Not only because the soft texture of the photo but also the way in taking which I appreciated. Unlike the digital-camera that you can press the shoot unlimitedly, the film-camera could only press for 36 times as a roll of film. In that case, which provides the dramatically circumstance for ruminating. Here is the contrast, for a digital camera, you may takes dozens photos with an object, and to select the best one afterward. But for the film-camera, You have to ruminate for dozens of time until you press the shot and get the best result. Personally, I view the way to using the film-camera I mentioned above as a way of meditation. For masters, who hardly take the shoots but with the masterpiece of each one who take.

PAINTING AND SKETCHING (High School) To salute the Jean Édouard Vuillard The cells of art have already emerged on painting when i was nine in the primary school, As a consequence, i entered the high school specialized on painting. We took general courses in the morning and painting in the afternoon, In other words, I am the person who tolerating in the morning of rationality and waiting for the perceptual afternoon. In that time, the majority students who pursuing China Academy of Art would copy a high-score painting and recite in the examination pervasively. On contract, our teacher just thrown us with a book of Jean Édouard Vuillard, whose works moving us intrinsically. We were growing in a sensitive and perceptual environment and affecting by the works of Vuillard. Actually, my characteristic of painting is affected by Vuillard strongly. The right corner one was trying to learn from the Vuillard.

01 Women Women is a name for the public exhibition which evolved from a feminist exploration and expression as a point of departure for an examination of LGBTQ visuality, subjectivity, and identity in the visual culture of China. As the friend of Abby Chen, the curator of Women, I have done the booklet design for the exhibition in Shanghai, and the invitation letter in the San Francisco. For the invitation letter which seems to be the simplest work you can imagine, however, the details we have communicated for more than twenty times, such things like the way of folding, the capability in reading, to be unique or to be integrated. 02 Edge Gallery These works were designing for Edge gallery, an art gallery located in Hongkong. My job was communicating with artist who will exhibit in the coming exhibition. Via the chatting, I need figure out what is the best style of graphic fits to the artist. 03 PIN-UP It was an exhibition held by Hongkong University Shanghai Study Center in 2011. The exhibitors were three young architects from Korea. Besides assisting curator and communicating with the exhibitors, I designed a booklet and the poster for this exhibition. For the booklet, which bounded by an elastic in the middle, while the each pages had the different direction. When folded up, the booklet looked unique and easy in reading.
