The popular Mercredi Show began its 2009 fall session on September 2, 2009 at Carencro’s Pelican Park. The free, family-friendly outdoor concert series is scheduled 6-8:30 p.m. every Wednesday through October 21st. The concert series, which showcases popular local bands, also is held every Wednesday in March through the second Wednesday in April each year. The Mercredi Show concert is an outgrowth of a similar event in Dieppe, Canada, Carencro’s sister city. C’est magnifique! This is truly an event that you must not miss. For those of you who have not attended one of the concerts hosted by the City of Carencro and Carencro’s Parks and Recreation Commission, well, let’s just say you are missing out on a wonderful way to spend a picture perfect evening with your family and friends. At the September 16 concert featuring Geno Delafose & French Rocking Boogie’s Zydeco band, a crowd of approximately 700 attendees enjoyed fabulous music, free food, and the beautiful scenery of Pelican Park. While the bank played, local softball teams were playing on site and enjoying the entertainment. The only charge is $2.00 for beer; the parking is even free! Murray Conque, Chairman of the Carencro Parks and Recreation Commission explained that the event is funded by local taxes dedicated to the recreation programs in Carencro, coupled with generous sponsorships underwritten by local businesses. Anyone interested in future sponsorships should contact Carencro’s Recreation Commission at 896-8481. Your name will be highlighted as a sponsor throughout the yearly series. What more can you ask for?

Today I had the opportunity to learn more about Rotary and how it was founded. It was organized in 1905 by a man named Paul Harris. He and some business associates got together in Chicago and decided to create a forum for the dissemination of ideas as well as an organization which embodies the motto "service above self". I have been a Rotarian for nine years now and have enjoyed being a part of a local service organization that has international reach. Upper Lafayette Economic Development Foundation has the same principles as Rotary in that we have a common business interest in our region of Acadiana. Like Rotary, Upper Lafayette has both the opportunity and obligation to make our community a better place. Rotary is based on four basic principles of business ethics: 1. Is it the truth? 2. Will it be beneficial to all concerned? 3. Will it build better relationships? 4. Is it beneficial to all concerned? Please join our effort in being the best version of ourselves! Upper Lafayette Economic Development Foundation is an association of proactive individuals and business leaders, joined together to be a catalyst for change. The Foundation’s mission is to enhance and direct the positive, planned growth of Upper Lafayette, focusing on quality of life, while participating in the overall development of the Greater Lafayette Metropolitan Area. UPPER LAFAYETTE ON THE MOVE…. NORTHWOOD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH REBUILDING UNDERWAY Palm Sunday 2009 was a beautiful day, celebrated by Northwood UMC along with the many dozens of other churches in the Acadiana region. By 8:30 p.m. that evening, however, an electrical fire began in the rafters of the quaint church and razed the sanctuary. Much was made in the local media during the Easter holiday, but what is the status of the church’s rebuilding program today? Jan Swift, ULEDF Director, interviewed Rev. Ann Sutton and Dr. Sonny Corley for the foundation’s television show, “Upper Lafayette, On the Move!” which will air in the coming weeks. In a nutshell, Northwood is getting back on its feet! Well-known Carencro architect, Lynn Guidry, has been hired to design the new and improved floor plan of the church. Lynn was the original architect involved in the church’s beginnings in the early 1990’s and was the obvious choice for Jan Swift, Rev. Ann Sutton and Dr. Sonny Corley many reasons. “As comfortable as putting on an old pair of shoes,” mused Dr. Corley on what a perfect match the architect is for the rebuilding project. “Lynn knows us and understands the needs of the congregation,” Corley added. Although design plans are still being finalized, the new facility at the crossroads of Moss Street and Gloria Switch will be approximately 2000 square feet larger than the previous one. Class rooms will be more spacious and the floor plan more user-friendly for the congregation’s needs. In the meantime, Northwood UMC is fully operational and invites the community to visit! Worship is held weekly at Magnolia Court located on Gloria Switch Road until construction is complete, a gift for which the congregational is truly grateful. Insurance money is in place so all systems are go! For more information call Rev. Sutton at (337)235-9145. Congratulations Northwood. ULEDF wishes you the best of success!

TEURLINGS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL LAUNCHES CAPITAL CAMPAIGN ULEDF hosted Steve Dupuis at its September meeting to hear details of the Teurlings Catholic High School capital campaign underway. Dupuis explained that Clark Field no longer adequately meets the needs of the school community. Teurlings plans to install a state-of–the-art field turf surface to enable competitions to take place in all types of weather. The athletic complex will include a 3,000 seat stadium and give all team sports the ability to practice year-round. Teurlings also plans to make the stadium available to its feeder schools’ athletic teams. For more information please contact Steve Dupuis at sdupuis27@cox.net or (337)303-4066. Thank you for supporting Teurlings! Special Thanks to Acadian Ambulance Service for a wonderful September membership meeting! We were treated to a beautiful facility, great food, a unique overview and tour of the new headquarters of Acadian Ambulance, and the entertainment of comedian Murray Conque! All in all, we have received many favorable comments about how rewarding it is to attend ULEDF meetings. Please encourage others to attend and join ULEDF. Upper Lafayette is certainly On The Move!
