UPPER LAFAYETTE ON THE MOVE... Letter from the President: Mr. Adrian Baudoin Wow! What a beautiful first weekend of October. That cool snap and low humidity is just what we needed. Add in a little Ragin’ Cajun Football winning streak, and it’s a great start to the fall season in Lafayette. Let’s hope it stays with us for a while. Along with the perfect weather, October brings election season. Not only are we voting on our elected officials, we are also deciding whether to keep our consolidated form of government in Lafayette Parish. A couple of weeks ago, Upper Lafayette hosted a discussion about the pros and cons of consolidated government. Thanks to our distinguished speakers, our attendees were able to get a good understanding of the benefits and disadvantages, to learn about the recent history of government in Lafayette, and to gain some insight on the tax implications of the upcoming decision. We would like to express our appreciation to Don Bacque, Bruce Conque, Mike Hefner, Ed Abell and Conrad Comeaux who made the discussion possible. We also hosted our first annual Run Upper Lafayette event in partnership with Bridge Ministry of Acadiana to benefit their programs. Over 100 runners and walkers showed up early that Saturday morning at Pelican Park in Carencro to get Mr. Adrian Boudin Acadiana Computer Systems in a good run for a great cause. Apache Corporation Donates $100,000 to Lafayette Area Non-Profits Apache Corporation, an independent exploration, development and production natural gas company, hosted an inspirational event at the Crowne Plaza on September 8, 2011, giving away $100,000 to local charities in our community. Upper Lafayette is already familiar with Apache’s dedication to our community, having been the recipient of over 400 crape myrtles granted to beautify the University Exit at I-10. Give Where We Live Facebook was an employee-driven project to improve Lafayette through an online, democratic voting process posted on FaceBook, Local people were invited to vote, every day, for their favorite charity in the quest to receive grant monies to further their missions! The ultimate grand prize winner, Dreams Come True (a nonprofit organization dedicated to granting the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses) was granted $50,000.00. Other top vote getters and grants included Dreams - $25,000; Healing House - $10,000; Healing for Heroes - $5,000; and Maddie’s Footprint - $5,000.

UPPER LAFAYETTE ON THE MOVE... Rabbi Barry Weinstein of Temple Shalom Organizes 9/11 Memorial Event Rabbi Weinstein of Temple Shalom in downtown Lafayette, a humble and inspirational friend of Upper Lafayette, organized a moving memorial service on the 10th anniversary of the 2001 attacks on the United States of America. Held at 8:00 a.m. at the downtown Lafayette Memorial at Parc Sans Souci, local officials and public-safety leaders such as City Chief of Police Jim Craft, Fire Chief Robert Benoit, City-Parish President Joey Durel and others participated in the Rabbi Barry Weinstein at 9/11 Event ceremony, which included hoisting of an enormous American flag and prayer services, as well as inspirational speeches by veterans such as Lt. Col. Danny Gooch. Rabbi Weinstein along with Bishop Michael Jarrell of the Catholic Diocese of Lafayette led the group in a call to remember peace. Firefighters at 9/11 ceremony

Rabbi Weinstein, whose birthday happens to be September 11, shared the following quote in a press release announcing the event, "Since the 2001 attacks, I have searched for an appropriate way to honor the memory of those who perished. I hope this event strikes the difficult balance of remembering those who sacrificed while giving hope to those of us still here. Again, this year, I shall offer words of prayer for our beloved America, for her continuing strength and security, and words of gratitude for the blessings of liberty and freedom which are

Upper Lafayette September Meeting Presents Pros and Cons on Deconsolidation Vote Upper Lafayette hosted a community forum on September 21, 2011 which presented the facts on the upcoming October 22, 2011 vote on deconsolidation of Lafayette City and Parish government. Well known community leaders Bruce Conque and Don Bacque, Charter Commission members, presented the pros and cons of the initiative to an overflowing crowd at the Holiday Inn on NE Evangeline Thruway. Conque’s presentation focused upon changing demographics and the need of the City of Lafayette to regain its autonomy and control its own destiny insofar as Council votes on the city’s quality of life, Lafayette Utilities System, police and fire protection issues, etc; Bacque focused upon the expense of duplicating government (elected officials and services) and the original reason Lafayette City and Parish agreed to consolidate in 1992. Lafayette Parish Tax Assessor Conrad Comeaux was present to answer questions concerning tax ramifications of the proposal, and Ed Abell, original Charter Commission chair in 1990, presented a background about how Lafayette Parish originally embraced consolidation and the economic reasons for which it was enacted. An interesting alternative was presented by Mike Hefner, demographer, about possible alternatives to an up or down vote on deconsolidation. The “Hefner Plan” proposes that five City of Lafayette districts be created which would allow Lafayette “City Council Members” to vote strictly on issues affecting the city of Lafayette. The Charter Commission considered this proposal but did not pursue it in its deliberations. If the deconsolidation vote fails, this option and other alternatives will hopefully be up for deliberation by the community. After the meeting, many people still had questions about how to vote on the ballot. given that it is worded in “legalese.” They knew their position, but not whether to vote for or against the initiative as set forth in writing on the ballot. In a nutshell: Vote “For” if you want to deconsolidate the City and Parish of Lafayette; Vote “Against” if you want to continue with consolidation and perhaps tweak the Charter to protect the city of Lafayette’s right to govern itself as the other five municipalities (Broussard, Carencro, Duson, Scott and Youngsville) are currently enabled by law. Upper Lafayette urges you to vote, always, and in an informed manner. Voting is your constitutional right and privilege: Do not waste this precious resource to make a difference for all of us.

IceGators Looking Forward to a Successful Season Opening November 11! The Louisiana IceGators are very excited for their upcoming 2011-2012 season with the home opener at the Cajundome on November 11, 2011. General Manager Louis Dumont stated, “We are looking to pick up where we left off last season. Coach Kevin Kaminski, who came on board midway through the season, turned the team around and has it headed in the right direction. Coach has recruited well all summer and cannot wait for camp to open up October 9th. We have, who we believe to be the number one goalie in the SPHL, Mike Brown. Of our 28 home games we will play most of them on the weekends. We feel that there is no better value in the area for family fun and entertainment. There will be exciting promotions all season long.” Dumont further stated, “Starting new this season is our partnership with “Bullying Stops With Me” and Acadiana Open Channel. We will be visiting schools here in Acadiana to speak with students about the serious issues of bullying. Our players and the Gator Girls will speak of their own experiences with bullying and how they dealt with it in the school.” In honor of local military heroes, the IceGators will pay tribute to both veterans and active military before and during the season opener on November 11. UPPER LAFAYETTE ON THE MOVE... Run Upper Lafayette A Huge Success! With 139 runners and over 225 people present, the first annual Run Upper Lafayette held on September 17, 2011 at Pelican Park in Carencro far exceeded our wildest expectations of success. With all profits going to Bridge Ministry of Acadiana, $4,500.00 was raised through the generosity of our community. Working as a team for six months in preparation for this wholesome family event, Jennifer Reynaud, Executive Director of the Bridge, and Jan Swift of ULEDF endeavored to pull together sponsors and volunteers to create the model for a yearly event promoting Upper Lafayette and the Bridge. With the beautiful sounds of the Nathan Sam Band presented by Surge Productions and delicious food prepared by Prejean’s Restaurant, a good time was definitely had by all present on that glorious day! ULEDF is grateful to the generosity of sponsors Festivals Acadiens, IberiaBank, and the Jim Lambert Law Firm, and in-kind sponsors Acadiana Bottling, Prejean’s, Sideline Sports and Printing and Surge Productions. Forty-three Serteens from Lafayette High volunteered to join us on that early Saturday morning, along with Madame Cindy Barry, their teacher/ Kat Crappel Two Run Upper Lafayette sponsor and long-time runner. Carencro High’s Interact Winners! Club was most helpful in organizing the Run Upper Lafayette t-shirts/packets for distribution to our participants. Most importantly, the run could not have taken place without Run coordinator, Todd Delahoussaye with the Cajun Road Runners team, who timed the event, provided direction and kept ULEDF on track in organizing the details of registration, promotion and other critical details which ensured a well run event. Look forward to next year’s Run Upper Lafayette in September 2012. Until then, better lace up those running shoes and get in gear!
