I have learned that in life, as well as in business, that what you don't say is just as important as what you do say. Dale Carnegie teaches its students about the danger of the three C's. The three C's are never to Criticize, Complain, or Condemn. When Upper Lafayette began as an organization, there were other North Lafayette groups and individuals who did a lot of the three C's. Our group took the opposite approach and our goal was to make a positive impact on our community. We wanted to bury the past and look to the future with great hope, optimism, and enthusiasm. I challenge all of you to assist ULEDF in being the "best version of ourselves". What accomplishments would you like to see become a reality for Upper Lafayette? I know that I have not always given my best effort to create solutions to the many problems that we face. However, I believe that the members of the Upper Lafayette Foundation have done our community a great service in not criticizing, condemning, or complaining about the ways of the past. We can all do more. In the words of Mr. Carnegie, "If you can't sleep, then get up and do something instead of lying there worrying. UPPER LAFAYETTE ON THE MOVE…. APACHE CORPORATION AWARDS ULEDF 100 CREPE MYRTLES FOR I-10 PROJECT! Upper Lafayette Economic Development Foundation has been selected to receive 100 red and white crepe myrtles through a grant from the Apache Foundation, a non-profit group under the umbrella of Apache Corporation. The Apache Foundation Tree Program was launched by Apache Founder Raymond Plank in 2006 with the goal of planting 1 million trees in the communities in which Apache operates, which includes Lafayette Parish. “As a company that makes its living producing natural resources, Apache takes its responsibilities to the environment seriously by continually assessing the company‟s „footprint‟ on the planet and implementing appropriate actions to reduce that impact,” said Obie O‟Brien, director of Government Relations and Corporate Outreach. Planting trees is an effective way to better communities by reducing sound, producing oxygen, storing carbon, providing shade, reducing erosion, and increasing property values, O‟Brien explained. Through the program, the foundation purchases and donates native seedlings or young trees for beautification projects coordinated by counties, municipalities, schools, churches, parks or other non-profits. The organizations receiving the trees are responsible for planting and caring for the young trees after Apache has delivered them. “The mission of the Apache Foundation is to leave the world a better place – through scientific study, practical application of environmentally sound principles of land use, planning and tree-planting as a method of carbon sequestration, and other activities that will improve the human condition around the world, particularly in the areas in which Apache operates. As reported throughout the last year, ULEDF is working to revitalize the I-10/University Ave. exit. The success of this project would not be possible without the generosity of Apache Foundation. Please watch our progress as the trees are planted in early January 2010! LINC Designated Neighborhood No. 4 Holds Meeting at Dupuis Recreation Center Over 100 people filled the LINC Neighborhood Committee meeting led by Lafayette City-Parish Planning Manager Mike Hollier and staff on October 26, 2009. Residents were asked to identify what was important to them in their neighborhoods and surrounding areas: drainage, traffic congestion, etc. The government held the meeting to give concerned citizens an opportunity to participate in the plans for future development of their LINC Designated Neighborhood, which encompasses the Northeast Quadrant of I-10 and I-49 bordered by I-10, I-49, Bayou Vermilion and Gloria Switch Road. It is hoped that by involving residents as “Coterie and Neighborhood Advisors,” people with vested interests in how their neighborhood is maintained and developed will stay involved and ensure that sound decisions are made. Safety concerns for increased traffic as the area is developing was one of the most pressing topics raised. ULEDF‟s own Michelle Leder, who serves as a member of the Lafayette City-Parish Planning Commission, was present at the meeting to answer questions and share knowledge of the planning process.
