Honoré (pictured left), emergency preparedess expert, will be presenting at a joint meeting with ULEDF, Rotary Clubs of Lafayette, Lafayette North, Lafayette Pinhook, and Lafayette South, and the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce on Veteran’s Day, November 11th at the Cajundome Mardi Gras Ballroom.

Lt. General Honoré, perhaps best known for leading Task Force Katrina, is praised for bringing the relief effort out of chaos in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Honoré is currently a Senior Scientist with The Gallup Organization, where he is working on developing questions to determine levels of preparedness and is also a CNN Emergency Preparedness Contributor. Honoré is on a mission to create a “Culture of Preparedness” in America, which he explains as investing in preparation prior to the event. He is a strong proponent of creating a national preparedness plan that focuses on family and community preparedness and standards for educating children about what to do in a disaster. Some of the ideas Honoré suggests are the need for dual trained teachers who can be disaster responders, having generators in drugstores in each geographical area so people still have access to medicine, and have cell phone towers that can be lowered before a storm and then raised after the storm. He defends these investments in a time of economic hardship because for every $1 spent on preparedness can save up to $9 in relief effort costs. In addition to these endeavors, General Honoré is lending his preparedness expertise to the Haiti relief effort, particularly with the Haiti Water Project, which he will be discussing during his presentation this November. The Haiti Water Project aims to provide clean, safe water for one of the most water-impoverished countries in the world, particularly after the earthquake. The goal of the project is to create sustainable water resources that empower local churches to meet the needs around them. Just one well can provide fresh water for 1,000 people. Part of the proceeds will benefit the Haiti Water Project.

I am extremely fortunate to follow Mayor Hazel Myers whose capable leadership has opened the door for incredible growth and opportunity in Scott.” Morrison is a graduate of Acadiana High School and Louisiana Technical College, in addition to other state certifications in Economic Development and Political Education. Morrison will take his new position at the start of next year, creating a vacancy for his District 1 Council seat, which he has occupied for the past 4 years. During his campaign, Morrison pledged to make headway in economic development programs that will prepare the city of Scott for future growth, including increased street connectivity and the Apollo Road extension. Morrison also plans to implement programs for community development that will address quality of life issues, such as weatherizing homes, bill assistance and faith-based initiatives.

UPPER LAFAYETTE ON THE MOVE... Letter from the President: Dr. Ross Judice A few weeks ago, Upper Lafayette sponsored “Quest For Your Best,” a personal development symposium, which featured Dr. Barbara Ardoin who taught us the valuable lesson of deep breathing in order to reduce our stress response. While the relationship between leadership, stress, and performance is well documented, only a small number of companies today address stress management in their leadership programs. In terms of mental capacity, leaders selfreport that they are particularly struggling with their ability to focus, be present, and to think as creatively and deeply as their business requires. Linda Stone, lecturer and former Apple and Microsoft executive, describes part of this mental struggle as an issue of 'continuous partial attention'; the habit of continually trying to focus on multiple things at once. Mobile devices and the internet have made this worse. Over 600 high-potential leaders within Microsoft completed stress management workshops that included a simple, deep breathing technique. The deep breathing was taught as a means to expand an individual leader's mental capacity, in two primary ways: a) to reduce the impact of stress by moving from the emotional "lizard brain" to the rational executive brain; and b) to increase mental focus by returning to the present moment, person or task at hand. This particular technique was chosen because it could be used as both a stress-reduction technique and as very simple mindfulness practice (breath awareness). Feedback from the participants indicated that the breathing technique was a valuable tool and continued to use post-workshop. Dr. Ross Judice

Take a moment at your desk to turn off all sounds in the room, breathe slowly and deeply for one minute, focus your thoughts on your breath, and notice the wave of calm relaxation combined with focused attention.

New Member Spotlight: Opelousas General Health System Opelousas General Health System has operated continuously since May 27, 1957 to provide quality health care to the community. OGHS is a 286 bed full service medical center with over 1,000 employees and 125 active physicians. Operating out of its convenient main facility at 539 E. Prudhomme St. in Opelousas, it also has two other campuses at 3983 I-40 S. Service Road in Opelousas and 1341 I-49 S. Service Road in Sunset. Gary Keller, pictured at right, was selected to serve as the new President/CEO of OGHS, on August 12, 2010. Keller brings 36 years of hospital administration and senior leadership expertise, most recently as CEO of Lafayette Surgical Specialty Hospital and an owner of the Schumacher Group where he led growth from $3 million to $270 million in the first 12 years of operation. Opelousas General recently joined the Louisiana Stroke Network, a telemedicine initiative launched by another ULDEF member, Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. The Louisiana Stroke Network is enabling rural hospitals like Opelousas General to quickly diagnose and treat stroke patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Louisiana is part of the “stroke belt,” where the death rate from stroke was 49.2 or more per 100,000 population in 2006. This network aims to greatly reduce these statistics by using robotic technology that remotely places the specialist in the room with the patient. Since the network became operational at Opelousas General on September 20th, there have been half a dozen patients seen by specialists in a remote location. Gary Keller, CEO Opelousas General Health System

ULEDF thanks Opelousas General Health System for continuing to improve our quality of life here in Louisiana and its continued support for Upper Lafayette!
