We are coming off of an incredible start to 2014! We just hosted our annual Upper Lafayette Business Success Story event where we honored Richard Zuschlag and Acadian Companies. For me, the best memory of the event was when Richard spoke about his early days in the business: the fun tidbits that not many people know that really allowed us to get to know him better and understand what he experienced in reaching the success that may look easily achieved to an outsider, but in fact, was hard earned. Who knew that Richard drove the ambulances for the first two years of Acadian’s operation, or the fact that on the radio in his broadcasting days, he was known as “Dick Richards” because the name Zuschlag was not a ready fit for our cultural climate here in Acadiana.

I share this story with you to emphasize the power and substance we experience at Upper Lafayette meetings, and the reason we host meetings that provide insight into the hearts and minds of our esteemed speakers. Our meetings showcase individuals who are known for their business acumen, but who also have a willingness to share their insights into success, leadership and teamwork. Without fail, each of our business leaders called upon to speak have given credit to their dedicated employees. And you know what, they have all experienced incredible loyalty from employees who have been at the core of their success for decades. And by the grace of God, each of our speakers has also felt that they could safely talk about themselves and they have opened up and spoken to us in a way that they may never have done before. This kindness and willingness to be real and share their innermost thoughts has inspired each of us in attendance to reach up to the stars to attain own personal greatness. It doesn’t get any better than this! Perhaps humility, intelligence and drive are the common threads that have led to the outstanding careers of our many Upper Lafayette Business Success Stories we have shared in the past four years, such as Herb Schilling (Schilling Distributing), Todd Citron (Hub City Ford), Ed Krampe (McDonald’s of Acadiana), Ged Fleming (Home Furniture), Bob Guilbeau (Prejean’s Restaurant), Terry Rogers (Northside Paint), Bryan Tabor (Ace Plumbing), Karl Breaux (Breaux’s Mart), and Richard Zuschlag of Acadian. I want to personally thank each of them for being a part of bettering our community and for the support they show Upper Lafayette.

Upper Lafayette Philanthropist of the Year Event We are proud to announce that Nelson Warner, Bridge Ministry of Acadiana, will be the recipient of our Fourth Annual Philanthropist of the Year Award. Nelson Warner has dedicated his life to bridging the gap between the haves and have-nots of Acadiana. Upper Lafayette Honors Acadian Companies & Richard Zuschlag Upper Lafayette was proud to honor Richard Zuschlag and Acadiana Companies as our 2014 Business Success Story of the year on January 22, 2014 at the Ramada Inn Conference Center. With an overflowing crowd of 150 members and guests, our emcee, Gregg Gothreaux, President and CEO of LEDA, shared the story of Acadian Ambulance’s humble beginnings and the hard work and determination necessary to grow the company, which enthralled the crowd. Especially enjoyable were the personal reflections shared by Zuschlag as he offered heartfelt thanks for the award. Recalling his early days, he told the story of how in 1971, he and his two friends, Roland Dugas and Richard Sturlese, joined to form Acadian Ambulance Service, Inc. in Lafayette Parish. Still in his 20’s, Zuschlag recognized Upper Lafayette is to proud to honor an incredible opportunity to meet the void formed Richard Zuschlag and Acadian Companies when local funeral as the 2014 Upper Lafayette Business Success Story homes announced that federal law prohibited them from providing transport services to local hospitals. Starting with humble beginnings of $2500 and two ambulances manned by Vietnam veterans who had served as medics (and driving the ambulance himself the first two years), Zuschlag recounted the effort taken to engage sufficient public support to keep the company’s ambulances operating. Upper Lafayette Honors Acadian Companies & Richard Zuschlag Gothreaux stated that Acadian’s growth throughout its four decades of service was enabled by innovative methods of enrolling ambulance memberships to underwrite the service, as well as the Acadian Ambulance Communications Center with its unsurpassed computer technology and professional staffing which serves as a model for the nation, enhanced 911 services that identify the address where paramedics are needed, a world class EMS academy, among many other practices that are copied nationwide. A native of Pennsylvania and a graduate of the Capitol Institute of Technology in Washington, DC in 1970, Zuschlag’s decision to stay in Acadiana more than four decades ago has resulted in six subsidiaries now known as “Acadian Companies” with over 4,000 employees in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi. Zuschlag stressed that the success of Acadian Companies is attributable to the loyal and dedicated employees who form the heart of the company. Upper Lafayette is blessed to have Acadian Companies and Richard Zuschlag as loyal and supportive members. Congratulations to Richard and Acadian for your incredible business success and thank you for making our fourth annual Business Success Story an incredible event! We are also grateful to The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco Free Living for serving as our generous sponsor of this event.

Gauthier’s RV Center Ready to Meet all of your Travel Needs Upper Lafayette is pleased to welcome Gauthier’s RV Center as one of our newest members. For the past 35 years, the Gauthier family has served Acadiana with their extensive selection of recreational vehicles, manufactured residential homes, and trailers. Jim Gauthier, only in his 20’s at the time, founded Gauthier Homes with his brothers Robert and John, in 1979. At that time, the Gauthier brothers were exclusively selling manufactured residential homes. By the late 1980s, the business had expanded with the financial assistance of Guaranty bank, and they began adding recreational vehicles to their stock. With a new name and a new focus, Gauthiers’ RV Center continued their hard work, building their way up into the heart of Lafayette’s local business scene. By 2008, they had received the honor of winning recognition as a Top 50 dealer in their industry, and a wall in the dealership is dedicated to showcaseing the many awards the dealership has received from its peer organizations With the move to a more convenient location on Interstate-10 in 2003 in Scott, Gauthier’s RV Center now provides a wider variety of services, extending their merchandise from recreational vehicles to include travel trailers, fifth wheelers, toy haulers, and horse trailers. Gauthiers’ RV carries the top manufacturers in the industry, including Spree, Spree Escape, Mobile Suite, Tradition by DRV, Flex by Augusta RV, Durango, Sportsmen, Coyote and many others. Today, the business thrives on the sale of their RVs. Typically, the vehicles range in value from $14,000 to 15,000, and they offer financing for their customers. They offer two types of recreational vehicles: a motorized model and a trailer which is towed behind a truck during transportation. We had fun visiting Gauthier’s when we met with Jim Gauthier, his brother John, and staff. We encourage you to check it out yourself and see the elegant line of recreational vehicles which will suit all of your travel needs.

Gauthier’s RV Center is located at 124 N. Ambassador Caffery Pkwy. in Scott. For more information please visit their website at www.gauthiersrv.com, or call (800) 235-8547.

Gregg Gothreaux Presents State of Lafayette Economy at Upper Lafayette Meeting Gregg Gothreaux, President and CEO of Lafayette Economic Development Authority, served as emcee at our January Upper Lafayette Success Stories event and shared 2014 Economic Indicators for Lafayette. He left no doubt that Lafayette is a great place to live, work, shop and invest. According to The Milken Institute's annual index of Best-Performing Cities, Lafayette is the #24 Best Performing City in America, and leads the nation in both Wage Growth, at 7th place, and Job Growth at 12th place. The index rank the nation's 200 large metropolitan areas and 179 smaller metros. In the Institute's index, employment growth is weighted most heavily due to its critical importance to community vitality. To read the full report, visit http://www.milkeninstitute.org/publications/publications. taf?function=detail&ID=38801446&cat=resrep. Area Development declared Lafayette as the number one Gregg Gothreaux leading location for 2013. "The CEO of LEDA growth in Lafayette's economy over the past several years can be greatly attributed to steady growth in the energy and healthcare industries, which account for 40 percent of the area's GDP," Gothreaux stated. "These industries remain relatively recession-proof and will continue to contribute to Lafayette's steady economic growth, while providing an impetus for our growing finance and entertainment industries." Gregg Gothreaux Addressing the Crowd at the 2014 Upper Lafayette Success Stories Luncheon

FDI Magazine’s American Cities of the Future report listed Lafayette as the #1 small American city of the future for strategy. Our clever marketing slogan, “Innovation with an accent,” was a key player in this designation. More information can be found online at http://www.fdiintelligence.com/Locations/Americas/American-Cities-of-theFuture-2013-14. In 2012, Lafayette generated $5.7 billion in retail sales. Although 2013 data was unavailable at the time of his presentation, Gothreaux speculated that our city surpassed the previous year’s figures. The per capita income of Lafayette ranks in the top 9% in the United States, weighing in at $50,546. Finally, the unemployment rate in Lafayette falls at 4.1 percent, compared to the national average, at 7 percent, and the state average at 5.6 percent. We are so grateful to Gregg Gothreaux and his staff at Lafayette Economic Development Authority for preparing the data for this presentation. To learn more about the economic state of our parish, please visit www.lafayette.org, or call LEDA at (337) 593-1400.

Welcome to New Member: Valerie Gotch Garrett, APLC Valerie Gotch Garrett is one of those dynamic people that you just want to gravitate toward. Her professional accomplishments are many, and yet, the truly striking thing about Valerie is her warm spirit and contagious laugh. She makes you feel that anything is possible. Valerie grew up in Upper Lafayette Parish, and studied at the Immaculate Heart of Mary (K-8). She is a 1978 graduate of Holy Rosary Institute and graduated from USL with two degrees: Bachelor of Arts in Upper Elementary Education and Public Relations & Interpersonal Communication. Valerie began her law studies after having two children and earned a Juris Doctorate from the Southern University Law Center. She has been blessed with five children and four grandchildren, and is married to Kenneth Chaisson, a realtor with Van Eaton & Romero. A

practitioner

concentrating

on family law issues, Valerie is also certified to handle capital cases. Her work in criminal defense began when she appeared before Federal Judge Valerie Gotch Garrett Rebecca Doherty who saw her potential and encouraged her to pursue that field of practice. With more than 20 years of experience, Valerie has witnessed the cycle of despair and crime that can affect families of poverty. She speaks of working with young juvenile offenders who end up repeating the cycle of jail time and believes that utilizing rehabilitative programs rather than incarceration of youth is a way to end the vicious cycle of turning to crime. Valerie’s first-hand experience has led to the realization that poverty, mental health issues and drug use are three common issues for juvenile offenders in the criminal justice system. Valerie is active in our community, serving as a Lafayette Airport Commissioner. She is a member of the Lafayette and Louisiana Bar Associations, a Barrister of the American Inns of Court, active in Valerie Garrett Accepting Award at Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and Women Who Mean Business Luncheon numerous legal organizations. She 2010 has been honored as a “Woman Who Means Business” by ABiz in 2010, and has received the Lafayette Bar Association’s Lafayette Volunteer Lawyers’ Outstanding Attorney Award for the past 3 years and was honored as 2013’s Top Lafayette Volunteer Lawyer. When asked why she works at bettering the world around her, she stated, “I love my community, so I will try to do whatever I can for it.”

Upper Lafayette Honors Business Hall of Fame Employees As a new feature at our annual Upper Lafayette Business Success Event, we asked our member businesses situated in Upper Lafayette Parish to identify valued and loyal employees who have helped grow their companies. We have been so inspired by the heartfelt stories about these dedicated employees who are the true reason for the incredible business success enjoyed by our members. And in today’s business climate, where many younger workers never expect to stay at the same place of employment for any long period of time, it is inspirational to hear of employees who have been on the job 30, 40 and 50 years. At our January 2014 meeting, our inaugural Business Hall of Fame Honorees were Jennifer Reynaud of Bridge Ministry of Acadiana, and Bill Vidacovich of Acadian Ambulance, each of whom exemplified the spirit behind this award: they make a difference each and every day at their places of employment!

Jennifer Reynaud was nominated by Nelson Warner of Bridge Ministry because of her dedication in building up the wholeness and self-esteem in the lives of the under-resourced in our community. She works each day in the pursuit of God’s work and not in pursuit of recognition of status or glory. Upper Lafayette has been blessed to work with Jennifer in our annual Run Upper Lafayette which takes place each September. Jennifer is one of those people who always get things done, and done well.

Bill Vidacovich has dedicated 40 years of service and dedication to safety and efficiency on behalf of Acadian Ambulance Service that is a tribute to his commitment to excellence. He was Acadian’s first and only mechanic in 1973 and has grown its fleet to hundreds of vehicles, and 14 fleet maintenance shops with 103 employees. Bill instituted the Allsafe Driver Safety program, designed the ambulance’s interior module for added safety, brought the fleet to GM warranty station status, began the inhouse instruction of modular ambulance bodies, and introduced use of the fuel-efficient sprinter ambulance which earned Acadian the private-sector leadership award in the “Going Green” competition. He is active in his community and church. Bill’s dedication has truly led Acadian Ambulance to a level of excellence no one could have imagined 41 years ago!

Upper Lafayette Economic Development Foundation expresses deep gratitude and appreciation for its esteemed colleagues and 2014 Business Hall of Fame Honorees Jennifer Reynaud and Bill Vidacovich. Congratulations!
