UPPER LAFAYETTE ON THE MOVE…. NORTHSIDE HIGH RECEIVES GRANT TO BUILD MOCK COURTROOM

Upcoming Events Meeting Schedule 2009 July 15 September 16 November 12—Special Guest Chief Justice Kitty Kimball Locations to be announced. Contact: jan@upperlafayette.com

A room full of judges, local attorneys, the presidents of the Louisiana Bar Association and Louisiana Bar Foundation, and other dignitaries crowded into Northside High’s new mock court room on May 4, 2009. With a $20,000 grant from the Louisiana Bar Foundation, Northside was able to convert a pre-existing class room at the high school into a first class mock courtroom. Liz Tullier, a highly motivated, engaging teacher of the law-related curriculum, obviously has the respect of the students in her classes. Just as importantly, her students are gaining the respect of competitors statewide: the team placed first and second in an Acadiana Mock Trial Competition, as well as having individual students place first in competition at the state level. Liz Tullier The Louisiana Center for Law and Civic Education has designated several high schools around the state, including Northside High, as “Law Signature Schools.” Louisiana Bar Foundation’s incoming president, Drew Ranier, of Lake Charles, stated proudly that the model courtroom project, initiated at Northside High, will be implemented at other deserving schools around the state of Louisiana with monies donated from the foundation. Please share this wonderful news so that others may know the good things going on right here in Upper Lafayette!

UPPER LAFAYETTE ON THE MOVE…. ACADIAN HILL COUNTRY CLUB HOSTS ROTARY SOUTH EVENT FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS We proudly salute ULEDF member John Guilbeau and Acadian Hills Country Club for hosting the 4th annual golf tournament to benefit Special Olympics Louisiana. Held this year on April 27, Rotary Club of Lafayette South raised approximately $31,000.00 to further the cause of this wonderful charity. UL Football Coach Ricky Bustle served as Honorary Tournament Chairman. The crowd was filled with other local celebrities including City-Parish President Joey Durel, Council members Jay Castille, Keith Patin and Jared Ballard, Lafayette Chief of Police Jim Craft, and of course, many familiar faces from Upper Lafayette! Generous prizes were awarded and most importantly, the special Olympic athletes in attendance were glowing with pride at being honored on this special day! According to Special Olympics Louisiana’s website, “2.25 million athletes worldwide (552,499 in North America) train year-round for competitions that are styled after Olympic Games. Each year more than 15,000 competitions in both summer and winter sports are held in communities throughout the world and there are more than 700,000 Special Olympics volunteers worldwide. In a Chronicle of Philanthropy poll in 1994, "Special Olympics, which promotes athletic competition for the intellectually disabled, was widely viewed as the most credible charity (in the United States.)"

G. Carlson, R. Gaubert & J. Durel

This year marked the first year where the special Olympic athletes played as a team rather than in individual competition. The team outdid themselves and scored a six under par! CongratuSpecial Olympic Athletes w/ lations to all who participated and had a memorable time. Mayor Durel
