Local TV station KDCG was just recently added to its portfolio. Delta purchased the station from businessman Bobby Dupre, whose “The Bobby Dupre Show” remains on the air, as has much of the station’s programming. Chuck, who says he was attracted to the opportunities Delta presents and the fact that the media group is privately owned, maintains he will be committed to offering local programming. “Our staff will strive to mirror the local values of Acadiana with our programming content in radio, television and interactive platforms,” he says.

UPPER LAFAYETTE ON THE MOVE... Upper Lafayette Hosts Fourth Annual Crawfish Boil at Teurling’s Teurling’s Catholic High School could not have provided a lovelier setting for Upper Lafayette’s annual crawfish boil held on April 19, which drew a crowd of over 100 guests. The evening was crisp and clear, with the setting sun providing a breathtaking backdrop of the new stadium being built at TCH. Father Hampton Davis offered a moving tribute and blessing to our endeavors, and we heard inspirational words from Principal Mike Boyer. Coach Sonny Charpentier was our chief organizing force for the event and every detail was orchestrated perfectly. Jake Delhomme, Teurling’s beloved football star, spoke of his love and pride for his alma mater. Humble and kind, Jake is a powerful example of a true “star.” He took time with all of us, taking photos, visiting, and making us feel at home. What a gift this evening was and how grateful we are to Teurling’s for welcoming us to their beautiful school.

UPPER LAFAYETTE ON THE MOVE... A Conversation with Cecile Walters Hebert, Walters Funeral Home With my family’s investment in Walters Funeral Home and Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, my future is tied to this area. I am a firm believer in living where you do business, so I’m very eager to see residential and retail ventures flourish. I envision an Upper Lafayette where creative people choose to live: neighborhoods with fewer restrictions, but enough planning and development to protect the investment and ambiance; larger lots, wider streets, and easy access to get into the heart of Lafayette; and residents who value privacy, individualism, and smart growth. Upper Lafayette wants to attract people who want character in their neighborhoods, not just in the architecture, or the layout, but in the people that live there. People who embrace individuality, not try to stifle it.

My target profile of an Upper Lafayette resident 1. Middle class 2.. Independent thinker 3. Enjoys the outdoors and values open space 4. Entrepreneurs 5. Values “smart growth” 6. Artistic, unique, “creative class” Cecile Walters Hebert

As my husband and I begin our search for this type of neighborhood, we’ve come to realize that Upper Lafayette has an incredible opportunity to set itself apart and craft a distinctive difference from the types of neighborhoods currently being developed in Southside Lafayette/Youngsville/Broussard. Cecile Walters Hebert is the office manager at Walters Funeral Home at 2424 N. University Ave. in Upper Lafayette. Super 1 Foods Opens In Carencro

Super 1 Foods held a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating its grand opening on Thursday, April 26, 2012. Jay Holmes, Carencro Store Director, introduced his team of managers to city and government officials, Super 1 executives, and customers. “Super 1 Foods prides itself on giving back to the community. We will begin that commitment today,” said Holmes. Located at I-49 Service Road and Hector Connoly Road in Carencro at Exit 7, the 55,000 square-foot store offers a wide variety of groceries, baked goods, and general merchandise. The store also has a fuel center, pharmacy with a drive-through window, bakery and deli, and an open-air section with seasonal merchandise and displays. As the ceremony was under way, Super 1 Foods granted $1,000 in contributions to the City of Carencro, Carencro Fire Department, Carencro Police Department, Carencro Middle School, and Carencro High School. Mayor Brasseaux commented on the gift from Super 1 Foods and the fact that they are open for business in Carencro. “The opening of Super 1 Foods in Carencro means that people who normally do not grocery shop in Carencro, but go to Lafayette or Opelousas, will now have another option and have the convenience of shopping in Carencro. Super 1 Foods/Brookshire Grocery Company has shown its commitment to being involved in the community in which it operates with the generous donations made at the ribbon cutting ceremony.” Special thanks to Stacey Judice, Community Chronicles, for content and photo.

UPPER LAFAYETTE ON THE MOVE... Oakbourne Country Club Hosts Open House

Tom Stewart, General Manager of Oakbourne Country Club

Oakbourne Country Club hosted an Open House on April 26, 2012, celebrating its brand new look. An excited crowd gathered to enjoy delicious food and refreshments. It was a gorgeous spring evening which highlighted the natural beauty of the club’s golf course, landscaping and amenities. Under the helm of its General Manager, Tom Stewart, who joined Oakbourne in November 2010, the private club focused on updating Oakbourne. “The club was not realizing what a resource it had,” Stewart says. “Food and beverage is such a terrific way for a private club to generate revenue, not just for member food and beverage, but banquets, weddings and special events. One thing we knew we needed to do was to brighten the place up, give it a fresh look, and just bring it into the 21st century.” Interior Design Solutions of Breaux Bridge served as the design team directing the project, and local talent was utilized as much as possible. One major change is the renovated bar, featuring Cambria quartz countertops, new cabinets and shelving, stainless sinks and bins and a mosaic glass/stone tile backsplash. Hanging on the wall is a custom-designed metal sign with the Oakbourne logo fabricated by Begneaud Manufacturing. Metal-flecked Polyflor safety flooring covers the area behind the bar. The carpet in the mingling space was removed and replaced with wood plank flooring. Opened in 1955, Oakbourne began as a member-owned private club with an 18-hole golf course. About 13 years ago, the facility added a tennis center with a two-story pavilion and pro shop. In the last 10 years, the member areas, including the grill, were reconfigured and enlarged. During that renovation, the club closed off the “Hebert Room” memorializing local PGA Champions and Ryder Cup players Jay Hebert and Lionel Hebert. In 2008, the driving range was expanded and equipped with a 121-foot net to protect neighbors from errant golf balls. Oakbourne can accommodate any party from a small group to 300 guests. Upper Lafayette has enjoyed hosting meetings at the club in the past, and is hosting its July 18, 2012 luncheon at the club. UPPER LAFAYETTE ON THE MOVE... Upper Lafayette Fund to Assist Carencro Flood Victims Two months following the catastrophic flood that engulfed areas of Carencro and the surrounding communities, many people have still not obtained assistance. Elderly citizens, as well as young families, are among our neighbors who remain unable to move forward due to lack of resources such as money, guidance, or labor to rehabilitate their flooded homes. The area has not been declared a federal disaster site by FEMA so it will not qualify for funds to assist the community. Many relief agencies reportedly have not been able to adequately respond to the calls for help. Please do not just sit by if you are able to help. You can make a difference by donating to the Upper Lafayette fund, administered by the Community Foundation of Acadiana, by visiting our website at upperlafayette.com. Your donation will be recognized as a tax-deductible donation and will be distributed via a donor advised fund to a deserving 501c(3) non-profit organization, church or school which is directly helping the flood victims. Thank you and please keep all flood affected families in your thoughts and prayers. For more information, please contact jan@upperlafayette.com. Upper Lafayette Receives $8,000.00 Grant for Work on University Ave. Gateway Project The Lafayette Convention & Visitors Commission celebrated the award of $160,000.00 to local museums, non-profit and governmental organizations at a luncheon on May 9, 2012 at the Lafayette Hilton. The grant monies are collected through local hotel and motel taxes generated in Lafayette Parish, with over $2 million being re-invested in community projects over the past 15 years. Beginning in 2009, Upper Lafayette has been fortunate to garner Lafayette Enterprise Grant funds totaling $42,000.00 which has enabled us to spruce up the quadrants at the I-10/University Ave. Exit and to hire mural artist Robert Dafford to create UL themed logos. Partnering with the Office of Community Development of LCG, this year our foundation received $8,000.00 to continue work on this highly visible project. In 2012, our foundation is working with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff ’s Department to utilize inmate labor to enhance the landscaping on the interstate berms, and to finalize the UL Lafayette logos in progress. Serving on the selection committee which determines eligible grant recipients, Mike Michot was also on hand to deliver the ceremonial checks to each organization. Mike spoke warmly about the retiring Gerald Breaux, who has served as Executive Director of LCVC for 30 years. Gerald has been a friend to all of us, and from day one, reached out to inquire what he and LCVC could do to help Upper Lafayette in its mission to improve our community. Thank you, Gerald, and best wishes on this next chapter in your wonderful life.

Gerald Breaux
