UPPER LAFAYETTE ON THE MOVE…. ABIZ HONORS ULEDF MEMBERS ED KRAMPE AND JOEY DUREL! On August 26, 2010, the Convention Center overflowed with attendees of Acadiana Business’s second annual luncheon honoring the Top 50 Privately Held Companies in Acadiana. ULEDF’s Whitney Bank was a presenting sponsor of this prestigious event. Among the honoree businesses were ULEDF members Acadian Companies, Hub City Ford, Schilling Distributing Co., Home Furniture Co., McDonald’s of Acadiana and Fenstermaker & Associates. In order to qualify for this distinction, the company must be based in this six parish region, and not be a subsidiary of a company based outside of the region. Based upon gross revenues, the list of elite companies which drive our economy was truly impressive. For more information, please see www.theind.com.

As a special surprise for the crowd, as well as the recipients, Acadiana Business honored two special men well known for their contributions to industry and the community. Ed Krampe, founder of McDonald’s of Acadiana and V. P. of ULEDF, was bestowed the Business Achievement Award. Recognized as a force in the local restaurant industry, Ed is renowned for his never ending quest to upgrade the product and facilities offered to his clientele. From humble beginnings in 1972, Ed, his family and loyal team have built McDonald’s of Acadiana into a blockbuster business garnering $46 million in revenue in 2009.

A truly surprised Joey Durel was selected Executive of the Year. A seasoned business man and civic leader prior to serving as LCG Parish President, Durel’s drive to transform Lafayette into a nationally acclaimed city offering a unique fiber-optic network, as well as his current proposal Joey Durel for LCG to invest in the “Horse Farm,” led Acadiana Business to recognize his special form of leadership. “I accepted this award on behalf of all the Lafayette CEOs and executives whose hard work and excellent leadership make Lafayette thrive. When government is working well and a community is flourishing, it is because of the success of local businesses and their leaders . My administration is fortunate to work alongside many of these companies and their people. I have come to believe that the positive accolades received by this government and this administration are simply a reflection of Lafayette’s strong business community.” Congratulations to ULEDF members Ed Krampe and Joey Durel for a job well done!

Emerging leaders, surveys tell us, increasingly want to be social entrepreneurs creating ventures for social change - they want to bring their values to work, to feel that their organizations have a meaningful purpose, and to see that they have an opportunity to make a difference in their workplace and the world. Upper Lafayette Economic Development Foundation is a small organization making a difference by bringing seasoned leaders together with emerging leaders at our monthly meetings, and telling the story that Lafayette is a great city for emerging leaders. If you are thinking about starting or expanding your business, pay attention. Lafayette was ranked 9th Best Performing Large Metro/City in the nation citing job growth (22nd), salary growth (10th), and 5-year high-tech GDP growth (19th) as key indicators (Milken Institute, November 2009). Our unemployment remains below state and national levels. According to last October's Fortune Small Business, Lafayette was ranked second best mid-sized market in the nation for small business start-ups based on factors like a growing economy, affordable workforce, stable housing market, and low crime. Our per capita income is in the top 8% of all counties in the U.S. (Bureau of Economic Analysis). Our cost of doing business ranks 32nd lowest, income growth ranks 19th best and job growth ranks 24th best among the largest 200 U.S. metro areas (Forbes Magazine, March 2009).
