Jan Valik was born in 1987 in Bratislava, Slovakia. Valik graduated with Master in Fine Arts Degree (MFA) from Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, Czech Republic in 2012. During studies, in 2010, Valik was awarded a Studio Prize from Academy of Fine Arts, an annual Prize for an outstanding results in artistic research. Following year he was selected among finalists of the Exit Prize 2011, an emerging artist prize from University of JE Purkyne in Czech Republic. In 2012 Valik participated at RIACE, an Artist-in-Residence program of cultural exchange in Orissa in India, followed by two group exhibitions in India. In years 2013 - 15 Valik joined a number of exhibitions and Artist-in-Residency projects including CitĂŠ Internationale des Arts in Paris, France, MauMau Works in Istanbul, Turkey, and at Kvilda Arts Centre in Czech Republic. In 2015 his painting was among finalists of Painting Prize 2015, an annual award by VUB Foundation in Slovakia. In 2016, Valik has participated at BankART Studio NYK Residency program in Yokohama. Here Valik has deepen his creative research in exploring Japanese and Western respective traditions in painting. After return from Japan, in 2016, his painting created in Yokohama was awarded a 3rd place of Painting Prize 2016 in Bratislava, Slovakia. In April 2017, Valik will present his first solo exhibition outside Europe - at Niche Gallery in Tokyo, Japan. Following this development, Jan will present his work in an Artist talk at Tokyo University in June 2017. His current efforts in art are connected foremost with bridging and researching parallels of Japanese and European painting traditions.
