The Mattawan Consolidated School system is unique because it is a unified campus. All the school buildings and sports facilities are on one campus. The village of Mattawan is located on the eastern border of Van Buren County and can be easily accessed from I-94.
The schools straddle the central part of east Van Buren County and the central part of west Kalamazoo County and serve an area just west of Portage and Kalamazoo. Mattawan Schools are a part of the Van Buren Intermediate School District and offer one traditional high school, one middle school, one later elementary and one early elementary with a total student population of just under 3,900 students.

PROGRAMS OFFERED
Instructional Program: We “comfortably challenge” students using diverse techniques, addressing individual needs. We’re aligning our PreK-12 curriculum through Professional Learning Communities.
Specialized Schools/Programs: Mattawan offers special education and alternative placements, including the Van Buren Learning Center, Base Program, Vo-Tech, ATYP, and other district programs.
Special Programs: Gifted programs include ATYP, dual enrollment, grade-level accommodations, and various competitions and clubs (Odyssey of the Mind, Science Olympiad, etc.). Early Middle College starts in 10th grade (Van Buren ISD partnership).
Co-curricular Activities: Mattawan offers numerous extracurriculars. Elementary: Scouts, Girls on the Run, theatre, etc. Middle School: Interscholastic sports and ski club. High School: Band, choir, athletics, forensics, and more. Award-winning band/ vocal music programs offer travel. Competitive athletics (Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference). Comprehensive activities program (fine arts, athletics, and more).
Student Achievement: Mattawan students are high-achieving (1170 average SAT, top in SW Michigan). Many take AP exams (350+) and dual enroll (123 at KVCC/WMU, 64 in Middle College). National Merit Scholars and other awards. ~$3M in scholarships awarded in 2021.

What I like most about Mattawan are the teachers and staff; I truly feel like the majority of teachers here care a lot about their students and their success. They will help you if you need any assistance or extra guidance. One thing I would like to see change at Mattawan is the lack of funding in our arts programs (theatre, band); I wish our school administration showed as much enthusiasm about the arts as the students committed to them.
