Michigan School Band & Orchestra

Thank you for joining us this year for the MSBOA District XI Marching Band Festival. We celebrate tonight the students of all bands gathered here for their countless hours of hard work and dedication in preparation for tonight’s performance. Please show your appreciation for their efforts and accomplishments by being generous with your applause for all these bands.
The high school marching band is an integral part of a school’s music education program. The combination of music performance with movement and showmanship is a unique and thrilling production for the student and audience alike. The marching band is often the school’s largest and most widely visible music ensemble, each with its own style and traditions. Through the pursuit of excellence, the marching band promotes the values of musicianship, self-discipline, and esprit-de-corps.
The MSBOA Marching Band Festival provides an evaluation of the high school marching band using standards of excellence. Considering a band’s Classification, adjudicators evaluate one of three Captions: Music, Marching, and General Effect Showmanship. Each adjudicator awards a Caption Rating resulting in an overall Final Rating.
The Music caption evaluates three areas of the band’s overall music performance: Tone Quality and Intonation, Technique, and Musicianship. Comments not affecting the rating may be given regarding the repertoire’s suitability, complexity, creativity, continuity, and variety.
The Marching caption evaluates three areas of the band’s overall marching performance: Fundamental Marching Skills, Individual Technique, and Ensemble Technique. Comments not affecting the rating may be given regarding the visual program’s overall design, continuity, variety, suitability, choreography, staging, and integration.
The General Effect Showmanship caption evaluates three areas of the band’s overall showmanship: Music Effect, Visual Effect, and Coordination of the music and visual elements. Comments not affecting the rating may be given regarding the show’s suitability, complexity, creativity, continuity, and variety.
