This project began by thinking about combining geocaching and review-based web resources, to create a way for users to be explorers in their environments, while letting them know about points of interest they are close to?

-The current review and recommendation system allows users to leave horribly unpleasant reviews.
EEE 378 - Partnering with students of EEE 378 helped us gather more insight into the feasibility of our product. - The class suggested that the product targeted an already crowded industry. -There is need to focus on our specialization how two remain more different from other services and still cater to a large audience. - Moreover, there were concerns with the manufacturing cost of our original key-chain product. Which we addressed for our final iteration.

Discovery is a location-tracking system that helps users discover and recommend restaurants and retail businesses they find. The system works by combining GPS tracking and a pre-existing review site like Yelp, users can use Discovery to explore new cities while the Discovery device will subtly suggest new places for users to visit.

Pins
Sticker “tags” Stickers are placed in locations to “tag” them. A user recognizes a great spot they want to tag, and places a sticker (with permission) somewhere in the location. The user then scans the sticker’s bar code with the app and activates the sticker, tagging it with what kind of location it is and any information they think is relevant. Other users that have tags matching the ones describing the business will now be able to discover it if they are close.
The pins are the objects that the user will interact with the most. By either attaching them to a key chain or to a piece of clothing/backpack they will be notified when they are close to a location matching the interests they have selected in their profile. The pin vibrates as well as having an incrementally increasing light ring that will tell users how close they are to the location they are interested in going to.
Discovery
App The app is an addition to the existing Yelp app, users will make a profile, select their interests, and register the tags they make. As well as their personal information users can “follow” other users they have similar interests too, adding all of that users locations to things they will be notified of by their pin.
Brian Brian’s company sent him to a conference in Austin, a city he’s never been to. As part of a tourism campaign by the city, Brian and the other attendees of the conference were given Discovery pins to help them explore the city during their downtime. Brian really enjoyed the exploration-based suggestions given to him by Discovery, and will use it in the city he goes home to.

Good for Users Rather than traveling to a specific location, users can explore their immediate location for potential points of interest. Discovery works as an extension to the pre-existing Yelp app, so no new downloads are required. Asking to put a sticker in a location can help build relationships with locals, and well as spread information about Discovery. Users can follow other users that have similar interests, alerting them to nearby locations they have tagged.

Good for Businesses By using location verification, recommendations are always ensured to be by a user who has been to the location, helping to eliminate fraudulent reviews. Because users can only recommend businesses, there are no negative reviews. Anyone who “discovers a location is only alerted that it might be something they are interested in, they have no premeditated ideas about the location. Spontaneous discovery is key.
Discovery Unlike the regular Yelp app no businesses have better placement in the app, an even playing field of up and coming small businesses.
Discovery This is Brian’s favorite burger place at home. Because of it’s less than stellar location and the fact that it’s a relatively new business, it doesn’t have a lot of reviews on the standard Yelp website. By using Discovery to tag the location Brian taps into some of the more adventurous review site users, helping their business get new local customers.
Lucy tagged this location on her trip to Maine. After walking around the shore she stopped in and loved the clam bake. She talked to the owner about tagging the location and they were thrilled. She now goes there every summer.

Technology: - Bar Codes: used to register tags when they are placed. - GPS: implemented to track a user’s proximity to a place of interest. - Existing Yelp App: Discovery is an add-on to the existing Yelp app, users can simply buy the starter package off the app and start using Discovery. - LEDs: lights with intensifying brightness are used to tell a user how close they are to a location. - Vibration Motor: similar to an iphone, the Discovery pin will vibrate when a use is close to an interest point.

For style and color choices we used very similar styles and colors to yelp, due to their strong branding and business image. We thought blue would be the best choice, in contrast with their bright red palette. The round sticker was inspired by the existing stickers they have when a business wins an award on their website.
