BOXOPOLIS SPACE TO SPACE THROUGH BOXES

The anthropologist Marc Eugé refers to train stations as ‘non places’ that provide glimpses of a ‘utopian city world’, due to the way they are designed to function as spaces inbetween our journeys. Observing commuters in various stations in 7

London allowed me to see how movements from one point to another are either obstructed or assisted by the surrounding architecture. The former is what I have noticed the most. In the solution proposed the station becomes the

opposite of ‘non-places’. Both commuters and locals become part of an experience that starts before the journey itself. A place that can be unique to its station and yet hold familiar functions, allowing us to connect and flow with ease.

CIRCULATION STUDY In order to solve overcrowding and facilitate movement within the space, I have created boxes which depending on colour, shape, and arrangement hold various functions. The boxes will contain shops, restaurants, coffee shops, and waiting rooms as well as operating as access. Thanks to the perception we have of colours and shapes the boxes will aid us in navigating the space efficiently delaying obstructions and overcrowding.

Entertainment area (noisy)

The factor which this proposal takes into consideration is the regulation of the flow of people. The walls punctured by the boxes allow openings that work both ways in and out as well as carrying out their operations. Some boxes are located 11

in key areas that allow fast access with no obstruction. The other boxes allow slowerpaced access. The quiet area is located at the front part of the building conveying a calm and welcoming feeling. The noisier area is situated towards the

end where the bars and restaurants are placed. The back opens up to a garden where more cluster-boxes are located. Outdoor boxes function as shelter for those who would want to stay out.

PURPOSE This design will allow people to meet their needs without looking like a conventional space regardless of whether they are in a rush, waiting for a train or just looking to relax. The boxes will be rented to businesses which will allow not only their economic growth but also support the creation of the space itself. The design also incorporated its own staircase and seating, which mould around the geometric shapes.

CASE STUDIES The practicality of this concept makes the project ideal to be translated within other similar spaces. Here is an example of potential waiting areas and shops in a smaller scale station.

IRIS VAN HERPEN RETAIL SPACE DESIGN

24

Iris Van Herpen’s work is well known for her experimental approach in developing sculpture-like fashion, using materials like silicone, metal, glass, and iron. Van Herpen refers to her creations as “optical Illusion” designed to exaggerate 27

or enhance the human body’s movement. The venue designated for this project is located in Japan where the Alexander McQueen store is currently located. The space is set over two floors and it’s ideal to hold Van Herpen’s ready-to-wear

collections. The space will be functioning as a retail space but will hold aspects of an exhibition, to allow Herpen’s work to be showcased appropriately. The space evolves around her work, flowing and flaunting the marvellous shapes and colours.

STAICASE The shape of the staircase was inspired by Herpen’s “Seijaku” collection, which portrays sound waves as geometric patterns. The colours and forms in this collection helped shape the staircase which is the centre piece of this retail space. Hence the double helix design allows people to go up and down from opposite directions, allowing the staircase to be experienced and be alive.

VIKTOR AND ROLF THROUGH FRAGMENTS

40

The space chosen to hold the Victor & Rolf exhibition is the Lindley Hall located in London. Many leading fashion names, such as Tom Ford and Alexander McQueen, have unveiled their designs within this venue. With its vaulted glass ceiling 43

and natural light, the Lindley Hall provides the best setting to present an exhibition for Viktor & Rolf. This venue, equipped with back of house areas as well as two entrances, will hold both the exhibition and retail space. I have taken the opportunity

to take full advantage of the vast space and create an experience that leaves the public in awe from every direction.

47

SPECIAL ROOMS There are two distinguished areas situated on the first floor of the exhibition; they are lightly closed and separated from the whole space. One of the “rooms” is dedicated to their journey in creating the perfume which V&R is famous for. Flower Bomb. The other one showcases one of their latest collections which featured their previous works but in all white. This room shows the importance of all the collections and how they are still present and prevailing.

SHOP AREA The exhibition ends with a space dedicated to Viktor & Rolf’s ready-to-wear collections which the public can purchase and try on, allowing people to feel and “become” part of the exhibition themselves. Other than clothing items, the shop features accessories and perfumes. The shop can be accessed by the public who just want to shop using the second entrance.

AVIATION STUDIO MODERN OPEN PLAN WORKPLACE

60

The aviation studio at Bucks New University is set to expand and have its own facility dedicated to it, in order to create a modern, open-plan space. It will provide a themeless and airy setting that will accommodate a briefing area, fuselage, 63

classroom, formal seating area, and soft seating area. In order to renovate the facility, we were asked to recreate a suggested layout given to us by the head of the department, within an unused workshop. The existing mezzanine will be extended, making

the most of the unused space on the upper level, creating more space underneath for the simulator room, computer room, and classroom.

Entrance and exit Fuselage ‘Sim Box’ Briefing area & display board Flight simultar 65

In order to create a space where students could work together with easy access to all equipment, the space was kept very open plan. As you walk into workshop from the main entrance, to your right is the ‘sim box’, around which is a lot of free space as we learnt many students use the box at one time and need space to move around freely. Next to this there is the 12 seater Plane interior propped against a free standing wall which on the opposite side doubles as a pin board and briefing board. For this reason we also added further seating for students. Straight ahead of the entrance is space to locate the plane fuselage currently in the pipe line of being purchased.

Glass classroom Formal seating - breakout space Soft seating - breakout space Staff room

The classroom, mostly enclosed by glass is located in the furthest corner of the workshop, underneath the extended mezzanine. This is a space for structured lessons, it allows for separation between simulations and noises. Next to it, we have the enclosed black room which holds the flight simulator. Comfortable soft seating in the mezzanine for reading/ lunch breaks or briefings, add a relaxed feeling. Above said area we proposed a projector, giving students the opportunity to watch simulation videos hold presentations. While adjacents are more structured tables and chairs for project work and studying or more formal meetings.
