MED-O-GRAM MARCH 11, 2014
MEADOWS MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
Dear Meadows Families, I am a product of public education, and I have worked in public education for 26 years. I have been the proud principal of Madison Meadows Middle School for seven wonderful years. I have worked in three states, and throughout my educational career I have seen changes in school funding, initiatives, and expectations. Arizona currently has a number of House bills and Senate bills that – if passed – would drastically change the face of public education in our state. Many parents and community members in the Madison School District have formed an organization called Madison Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC). They work tirelessly to ensure that they are informed regarding pending legislation, and they contact legislators regularly to voice their opinions and concerns. Made up of parents and community members, the Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) assesses legislative issues for their impact on public education, specifically as they pertain to Madison. One of their top priorities is securing realistic funding for Arizona’s public schools, currently ranked 47th in the nation in per pupil funding. Levels of involvement range from passing along legislative information to lobbying legislators. See more at: http://www.madisonaz.org/community/citizens-advisory-committee-cac/ #sthash.b0z5ctsC.dpuf If you or your families have benefited from public education and you believe that the voters should be heard, please contact Madison CAC to find out how you can get involved. A link can be found on the Madison School District website’s home page.

MEADOWS ATHLETICS:
Athletic Fees: Parents, another friendly reminder...we need all winter sports Athletic Fees to be taken care of as soon as possible. Please pay your fee (Tax Credit) on line. See our website for the link. Also...help us get your son's and daughter's uniform turned in as soon as their season is complete. Thanks to all the parents that have contributed to make this another successful season for the Rams! Continue to support them as they advance through the VAC Playoffs! Madison Meadows requires all students that participate on an athletic team to pay an athletic fee of $100 to offset the cost of operating our athletic program. The fee pays for coaches, referees, conference dues, transportation, uniforms and equipment. The fee is “given back” in the way of a Tax Credit for the same amount.
Please pay the $100 athletic fee online: www.msd38.org • Click “Tax Credit” on the top right hand side. Scroll down and click “Donate Online”. • Forward the tax credit confirmation email to dvibber@msd38.org and include player’s name and sport. • Credit card payments also accepted in the office. If a student/family is in need of a financial consideration; volunteer assistance to our school and/or athletic program may be considered. If the student meets all of the academic and behavioral requirements, then we will consider providing a waiver that will enable him/her to participate. Sincerely, David Vibber Meadows Athletic Director
IB Corner of the World Dear Parent, We are very appreciative of our wonderful PTM for purchasing Managebac software for our teachers. This month, staff will participate in online training from Managebac and will learn how to navigate through the program and how to access the unit planner template. Thank you, PTM, for this generous purchase for our school. Students at Meadows are learning about the IB attribute of the month of being a “risk-taker.”
Share with your child your personal experiences at being a risk-taker and how it affected you in the long-run Make sure to provide positive feedback when your child attempts to do something new.
The description from IB for risk-taker is… “We approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.”
How parents can enforce the “risk-taker” in their children: Most importantly, make sure your child understands the difference between being a risk-taker by trying new things versus doing things that are dangerous Always try to encourage your child to play a new sport, try a new food when you go out to a restaurant; try a new instrument; and learning a new language Provide a safe place where you can talk about trying new activities and reflect upon how it felt to try something new
Students in Mrs. Lawton’s class are risk-takers as they practice speaking and writing in Spanish on the Smart Board.
Thank the Teacher Appreciation Committee provided teacher’s dinner from Taco Atoyac for parent /teacher conferences. They also provided a grab and go snack. -Kari Blakley
