The strategy formed around the initial Darlington Grove complex demonstrates ideal methods of construction, design and usage of space that would improve the overall sustainability and efficiency of the complex by 38%, had no strategies been implemented. Strategies include: • Double glazed, glass on high sun exposure sides (north-east, north, north-west) • Building orientation in respect to usage of spaces and sunlight/wind exposure • Roof solar panel orientation north at 30° • Double panel pre-cast concrete walls with insulation between, also allowing acoustic comfort • Reduction in leakage within the structure through the materials used • Eaves and overhangs on sides with extreme sun exposure
PEAK HEATING DEMAND
As well as the included strategies, some other elements of the building design that effected heat, light and energy analysis’ couldn’t be documented. This includes: • Vertical gardens on highly exposed concrete panels towards the sun • Vertical shutters that control wind/light emittance into bedrooms • Future site vegetation that may affect thermal mass performance of exterior walls The analysis generated outlines the ideal performance indicators that future iterations should follow as a guideline as well as a module for the future of sustainable vco-living complexes.
