Chapter One The History of the Tie Regardless of the fact that the definition of the necktie in most dictionaries states "a large band of fabric worn around the neck under the collar and tied in front with the ends hanging down as a decoration", its history says a lot more. Men have always found it necessary to tie something around their necks. The earliest historical example is in ancient Egypt. The rectangular piece of cloth that was tied and hung down till the shoulders was a very important part of an Egyptian’s clothing because it was showing his social status. In China, all the statues around the grave of Emperor Shi Huang Ti bear a piece of cloth around their necks, which is considered an ancestor of the modern necktie. In art from the Roman Empire, men are also depicted bearing neckwear that much resembles the contemporary necktie.
From 1924, it became accepted to cut the fabric in a right angle to the weaving direction instead of parallel to it and this method is still used today. The American Jesse Langsdorf came up with the idea and had it patented under the brand name Resilio. Tie tailoring has changed little since then. The products only differ in quality of material and inlay, the quantity of outer fabrics used and the amount of hand labour.

Chapter Two The Bow Tie Adjust the tie so that the one end is slightly longer than the other.

Cross the long end over the short end.

Bring the long end through the center at the neck.

Pull the bow ends forward, squeeze them together, forming an opening behind.

Chapter Three The Four-In-The-Hand Tie The wide end of the tie should be on your right side and the other end should be on your left.

Bring the wide end of the tie over the narrow end.

Then bring it through the back.
Hold the front of the knot loose with your finger, pass the wide end down through the loop in front. Finally, hold the knot and pull the other end of the tie to tighten the knot.

Chapter Four The Half Windsor Tie The wide end of the tie should be on your right side and the other end should be on your left.

Hold the front of the knot loose with your index finger, pass the wide end down through the loop in front. Tighten the knot. 8

These are the four main ties people around the world commonly use. The bowtie, a ribbon of fabric tied around the collar in a symmetrical manner such that the two opposite ends form loops. Then, the four-in-the-hand tie, it is narrow and slightly asymmetrical. The perfect knot for standard button-down dress shirt. The half-Windsor tie, it is symmetrical and triangular. The half Windsor is a simple, professional looking knot for necktie. The half Windsor is a large knot that has a nice uniform shape to it. Finally, the Windsor tie. It is symmetrical and triangular, similar to the half Windsor tie. This knot is usually used on silk neckties or ties that are made of thin materials. A knot you can use with any dress shirt.
