WAND + WOOL PAT TERNS FOR A HANDMADE LIFEST YLE

Justine Stage

THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO ... my children and my dear fella. If it weren’t for my first child, Willow Evelynn, I would not be the woman that I am today. She gave me a reason, and the will, to live. Without my second child, Arthur Benjamin, I would have never known a mother’s love for her son and I wouldn’t have had the motivation to get through my senior year. Because of the never ending late nights, countless hours of lost sleep, and unconditional love

and support from Paul Benjamin, I would not be graduating with a degree in Graphic Design. It’s hard to express the amount of love you have for someone through words but I hope that this dedication shows a small glimpse of how much I appreciate, adore and cherish him as my significant other. There is no one else I would rather tackle this whole adulthood, parenting craziness with. 1

INTRODUCTION WAND + WOOL began as an exploration of combining my craft with my career. In an attempt to create a book that I would personally cherish, I proposed to design a knitting book for the handmade lifestyle. Knitting from this book is meant to be an escape from every day stress. Naturally, knitting garments is a slow process which is why I chose to design my pattern book with the Danish word hygge in mind. Hygge is

loosely defined as an atmosphere of comfortable, calm, warmth, well-being and coziness. It is the ritual of enjoying life’s simple pleasures, or spending time with people you love. While you knit patterns from this book, take time to stop and appreciate your surroundings. Embrace the quite, slow nature of knitting, get lost in your stitch counting and create with intention. 3

ABBREVIATIONS The standard abbreviations used in this book are intended for use with American (U.S.) patterns. In addition to this master list, all abbreviations, that will be used in the patterns, will be listed in the corresponding “Supplies & Details section at the beginning of each pattern. It is recommended to have a solid understanding of basic knitting terms and techniques before beginning any projects in this book.

SAGE HEAD WRAP While the ground begins to thaw and you’re awaiting fresh blooms, knit a Sage Head Wrap. The wrap will keep your ears warm during the spring when a full hat is no longer necessary. The thick, wool blend holds heat but is also a breeze to work with! The Sage Head Wrap will take approximately an hour to an hour and a half to knit and finish. The wrap can be finished by wrapping the yarn around or it can be left as a simple twist. 21
