Junior Achievement of South Central PA Funding & Volunteer Opportunities

Updated: 3/1/16

About Junior Achievement Junior Achievement of South Central PA is a dynamic, growing organization with more than 4,500 volunteers and hundreds of corporate and individual sponsors. JA programs are for all students, Kindergarten to Grade 12, and will touch the lives 54,000 students in South Central PA this school year. In terms of market share, 25% of all students participate in JA programs each year. The national average for JA USA is 9%. Additionally, the efficiency of JA programs versus revenue is continually assessed to ensure a high return on investment for donors. For 2015-16, the average cost per student is $24.44, ranking JASCPA in the top third of all JA offices. More than 87% of JA's $1.3 million budget directly supports educational programs for 54,000 local students.

The Reality of Today  According to the Commission on Crime and Delinquency, the Pennsylvania inmate population has increased by 35.2% from 2000 to 2011. The annual cost per inmate is approximately $42,000 versus the approximate annual cost of $12,500 to educate a student. (U.S. Census Bureau.)  More than half (53%) of U.S. companies report a major challenge in recruiting nonmanagerial employees with the skills and knowledge needed. (Bridgeland, J., Milano, J., & Rosenblum, E. (2011). Across the great divide: Perspectives of CEOs and College Presidents on America’s higher education and skills gap.)

 Every day, 7,000 students drop out of high school. Last year, 1.3 million failed to graduate. By 2020, 15 million more will join them. Overall, young people who drop out are twice as likely as graduates to be unemployed; three times as likely to live in poverty; eight times as likely to wind up in prison; and twice as likely to become the parent of a child who drops out of school. (JA USA. (2012) JA Graduation Pathways.)  Scores from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) dropped again in 2012. The United States is now ranked 36th in math, 28th in science, and 24th in reading among 15-year olds worldwide.  A technology survey shows that 63% of teens text to communicate, and on a daily basis, only 35% of teens socialize with others outside of school. Volunteer Opportunities STEM Summit Each STEM Summit day needs approximately 40 business volunteers to include 10 career panelists and other individuals to assist with the competitions and experiments. This totals 1,000 volunteers for the 2015-16 school year. This is a full day assignment beginning at 7 AM and running until about 3 PM. The STEM Summit is a day-long program held at a high school consisting of nine thirtyminute sessions. There are three sets of experiments, four sets of competitions, and two sets of career panel presentations. The fast pace and constant motion help create an atmosphere of excitement and energy. The goal of the STEM Summit is to inspire students to pursue an academic STEM focus in the remainder of their high school courses to help prepare them for STEM careers in the future. After the completion of the Summit, guidance counselors have a foundation to work with students on appropriate school course work. Volunteer Needs:  Career Panelists - Each volunteer has a specific STEM career and is able to share their background with the students. The goal of the career panel is for students to find the presenters interesting, engaging, and inspiring; props are encouraged. The emphasis is on the presenter’s career journey and how they chose their career. They will spend about 8 minutes nine different times telling small groups of students about their career journey and answering questions as time allows.

Volunteer Opportunities  Competition Assistants - There are four competitions. For civil engineering, students assemble an object using 80-20 aluminum extrusion components or they build the tallest tower using only spaghetti and marshmallows. In the electrical competition, students race to assemble five components in a circuit. A math competition challenges students’ geometry and algebra abilities. And finally, the relay combines math; electrical, nuclear, and aerospace engineering; and culminates with a civil engineering activity where the student walks barefoot across eight dozen eggs.  Experiment Facilitators - Experiments give students an opportunity to be hands-on with science. There are three sets of experiments: one focuses on food science, another focuses on

chemistry, and the final on physics.

YES! is a day-long program held at the middle school level. It consists of a series of activities intended to help students gain an appreciation for the importance that financial and career decisions will play in their lives as young adults. The goal of YES! is to inspire students to appreciate the key issues surrounding careers and financial responsibility.

This program is intended to include all 7th and 8th grade students in a building. The synergy of making the program a daylong effort with every student participating creates a level of energy in the building that adds to the overall impact. In schools where class size is above 400 students and logistics are not conducive to a single day, the grades may be split into two separate days. Both the 7th grade and 8th grade programs consist of six lessons. Each lesson is designed to be approximately 45 minutes. The students will rotate through the six lessons during the day. The volunteer remains in the classroom and teach the same lesson six times. At the completion of the day, all students will go to the auditorium for the final wrap up and grand finale.

In-Kind Support In-Kind Support In-Kind support can come in many shapes and sizes to include printing and photocopying, donations of items that can be used in the auction at the wine event, or supplies such as chemicals to help with the STEM initiative and other JA programs. Wine Event Auction JA is always in search of a variety of items for the silent and live auctions held at the wine event. Items have included jewelry, sports memorabilia, gift certificates for various restaurants or services, tickets to sporting or cultural events, art work, fine wine, and vacation homes. The fair market value of each item donated is tax-deductible, and JA will provide a receipt. Printing & photocopying JA programs require a substantial amount of printed materials. These range in quality from professionally-printed invitations and programs to black & white photocopies for the REAL Life and STEM Summit. Donations of copy paper and/or offers to print some of these materials are greatly appreciated and directly save money, allowing JA to redirect those funds to other programs. Supplies Donations of computers, monitors, and other equipment are also a big help for use in JA BizTown. Further, the STEM Summit and REAL Life programs both require many consumable materials including various chemicals, eggs, latex gloves, etc. Finally, door prizes for the bowling events are always needed and can be any small item in the $10-15 price range.
