PREPARING TO BUY FOR THE FIRST TIME Young adults are often led to believe that buying property is out of reach these days. However, with a regular income and some careful planning, this myth can almost certainly be debunked. Budgeting Budgeting is an essential life skill. Knowing your incomings vs outgoings allows you to see what can be saved. Most banks offer online budget planners and there are also some excellent smartphone apps available e.g. Track My Spend by ASIC. Budgeting is an excellent way to create a clear picture of your spending habits and often highlights obvious overspending in specific areas.

Plan Spending A budget is important because it means you can plan your spending, rather than just living week to week. Planning your spending does not mean giving up all fun, it just means that the fun should be carefully budgeted for! A sensible spending plan would allow 10-20% of your income to be allocated to savings. Around 50-60% is an ideal allocation for living expenses. The remainder can be spent on fun, new clothes, holidays etc. This is only a guide but one worth considering to see if it’s a manageable plan. Create Good Habits Craig J.
