TIPS FOR GARDENING BEGINNERS Anyone new to gardening could be excused for thinking the process is rather intimidating, especially if you have friends or family with sprawling backyards of stunning mature trees and plants. The following gardening basics should set you on the right path making your home or investment property blossom in no time: 1. Soil type Identify what type of soil you have in your backyard. When you know this, you will know how to manage it and what grows best in it. There are three basic types of soil sand, silt and clay - ask your neighbours if you’re not sure.

2. Use organic fertiliser Use plenty of organic matter. Organic fertilisers, compost and mulching materials enhance the nutrient level and encourage life-giving soil microbes and worms. The more you use, the better. 3. Plant similar species together Plant appropriate species together, such as those that require the same soil, light and nutrients. Your local garden centre can provide expert advice. 4. Pests and diseases Craig J. Stephens Managing Director / Officer in Effective Control M 0418 547 938
Learn to identify pests and diseases so that appropriate action can be taken. Spraying with chemicals may be necessary but there are many more environmentally friendly options available. 5. Watering For plants that require a regular supply of water, water deeply every few days rather than a shallow watering every day. A long, deep watering will encourage the plant roots to go deeper in response to the deeper moisture level. Consider catching your own water from your roof if you don’t already have a fresh water tank.
