“The amount of time and investment done at Select Sires on reproduction and fertility of semen is mind-blowing…and it makes my job so much easier! When I can deliver leading SCR bulls with outstanding genetic merit to boot, I’m giving the best service possible to the people that matter to me…my customers!”
“We’re bringing a brand new look to SMS evaluations, providing even more detailed information to you to help manage your herd. My customers know that I’ll analyze and re-analyze their herd facts and cow information until we have the very best matings available for them. Better cows equal happier customers!”
Leading the industry in TPI, Net Merit and SCR categories, just to name a few, aren’t the main reasons people like Arden love their job! “I don’t do it because we have the best bulls, I work for All West to help my customers get longer-lasting, more valuable cattle with each straw of semen I sell. That’s where I get the most satisfaction!”
“We know it’s beneficial in measuring activity, but even more appealing these days are the extraordinary results customers are seeing with CowManager’s health module. Want to catch a sick animal days before she shows clinical signs of not feeling well? Think of the value in knowing that information ahead of time!”
“I never know what to get more excited about – the new bulls coming from our Jerseyland Sires partners, the improved accuracy and out-of-the-box adjustments to our programs, or the highly-trained, extremelyenthusiastic group of people working at All West who are customer-driven!”

Our featured cow
for this year is Budjon-JK ATW Entimate-ET EX 91, a 7th generation EX cow from the great Elegance family in Wisconsin. Entimate is an Atwood daughter from the 2008 Reserve All-American 4-Yr-Old, Budjon-JK Durham Embrace-ET EX 95 with the 2nd Dam being Encore Electra EX 95. Her 3rd Dam is none other than Elegance herself. I have admired the Elegance cow ever since I saw her at Madison in 2000 when she won the 125,000 lb class. In 2013, I had the opportunity to purchase Entimate and add this great bloodline to our herd at Legend Dairy Farms. Since coming to California as a yearling heifer, Entimate has matured into an EX 91 2nd lactation 3-year-old. Entimate is becoming a very influential Brood cow in our herd with frozen embryos by Mogul, Defiant, and Aftershock. Congratulations to Budjon and Joel Kietzman for developing this great family. This outstanding cow is an easy choice to add to our Portfolio of Legends.

President’s Message
By Anthony Souza
Once again it’s time to reflect on what a great year we have had as Holstein enthusiasts. 2017 has seen a lot of big things happen. We elected a new President and Vice President . . . along with Trump and Pence. Mother Nature graced us with some much needed rain. Milk prices are starting to show some signs of life again. Breeders are trying to develop the next great show winner or make the next big genomic star. One thing is for sure, our state association continues to thrive with great people, great cows and great hospitality. This year kicked off with the Fresno-Madera Holstein club hosting this year’s state convention in Carnival Fashion! The Maddox Family hosted this year’s convention sale at Maddox Dairy. The weather was perfect and the food was delicious. The sales averaged $5139. Sticking to the carnival theme, there was a small midway that was highlighted with a giant slide. It was a sight to see some of our senior members racing down the slide with our juniors. This was truly a first class event. The atmosphere was perfect for all ages. The convention concluded with the Senior Banquet where this year’s deserving winner of the Doug Maddox Memorial Senior Breeder award was presented to Dino Migliazzo. The A.J.Quist Young Breeder award was presented to Adam and Lacey Van Exel. Congratulations! This year’s state show was hosted by the South San Joaquin Holstein Club. We had record turnout and fantastic weather. Every year our show continues to grow has become one of the premier Spring State shows in the country. The quality of cattle exhibited top to bottom was impressive. I want to congratulate the Borba families for exhibiting the Grand Champion cow of both the Black & White and Red & White divisions. Along with the show, the association hosted a great sale the Thursday night before the show. I would like to thank the buyers, consignors and volunteers for making this sale a great success. I wish
the buyers the best of luck on your purchases. I would also like to thank Stephen Mast for his dedication and hard work in chairing this sale. Our Junior Association continues to thrive. Junior membership is up and I am so excited to see what the future holds for them. We continue to set the bar when we are competing at the national convention and have become that team everyone wants to beat. Each year California continues to send more junior teams to compete at the national convention. From our Dairy Bowl teams down to our DJM finalist, we wish our juniors the best of luck in Washington. I would also like thank Kirsten Areias for all the work and dedication she does for our junior association. I would like to thank the board of directors that I get to serve with. The leadership and knowledge that is brought to the table is why we have such a strong association. We have a great group of people that represent us and I am truly thankful to have them the board. I would also like to thank our office manager Kate Teixeira for all her hard work behind the scenes and dedication to keeping our association organized and running. In closing, I want to thank all the breeders, industry people and families of our association from the past and present for laying the foundation so that future generations will continue to enjoy what we do. I am very honored and grateful to be a part of this great Holstein family.

National Director’s Message By Pat Maddox
Your Holstein Association through good times and tough times continues to thrive. More members and more Registrations are a continuing trend. Increasing even more substantially are Basic I.D. and Custom Tags sales. Both of these products many times will lead to other products or services that we provide. But also following a recent trend is a decrease in Classification and Sets. Everyone is concerned as the Type evaluations are an integral part of our business and are needed to validate and build upon our Genomic data base. CEO John Meyer has worked diligently to hire and train a full staff of Field Representatives and Classifiers. It has not been an easy chore but he has certainly found and hired some great talent. The main office has continued to do more with less staff. The processes run with amazing efficiency because of a dedicated group of employees. Now, with the new Information Technology (IT) project underway there is much anticipation. The new systems, more than a decade past due, should be a great benefit to both membership and staff. We are looking forward to the efficiencies it will bring as well as giving us the ability to add or improve programs more easily. As fast as the computing world has changed in the last 20 years, it is extraordinary that we have gotten by this long. We will use monies from the reserve fund for this major undertaking and they will do their best to keep business and services going as normal as they can throughout this process. One issue we have had to deal with both here in California and in other regions is with members overuse of Field Representatives. Although they are happy to help, the Field Reps have large areas to cover and are tasked with developing relationships with new members. Some members, instead of learning how to send their EASY registrations off themselves or hiring some clerical help that has been trained, have had the Field reps stop on a regular basis and do the process for them. This has led HAUSA to charge for excess time for these regular duties. In all fairness it is not about the money. It is about the Field reps time and the responsibility that most all members have taken of learning how to do the EASY process or hiring someone to do it. On the Breed improvement side, both the Type and Genetic Advancement committees have spent a majority of their time on one trait, Stature. The last four years or so the Holstein breed has been criticized for getting too tall, too large, and inefficient. There has been some confirmation that Holsteins are getting too large from members with more cow numbers saying that some of the cows are not fitting
into their current facilities. We have made some adjustments on the TPI formula by adding Feed Efficiency and putting more emphasis on Fertility and Productive Life. So we did not penalize a cow for being too large as long as she produced enough milk for her size, lasted and was fertile. With Stature being positively correlated with production, type, udders and feet and legs, it makes it more difficult to reward an ideal cow type without rewarding Stature. To this point we have not put a negative directly on Stature as there is in the Net Merit formula. We do not want to say that even though this cow has milked more, bred back and has better conformation, that she is less valuable because she is too tall for someone else’s operation. We are looking at ways to decrease the correlation of Stature to Udder composite and Foot and leg composite, so that if you are breeding just for udders and feet and legs, you are not unintentionally breeding for Stature. Personally, I do not think the Stature issue is as critical for U.S. Holsteins. A majority of the bulls and bloodlines at the top of the lists are moderate in Stature. Like times in the past, environment usually sends breeding decisions in the right direction. If you have any issues or problems you want to discuss, feel free to call: 559-960-5469.

From the Office Manager By Kate Teixeira
Welcome to the 2017 edition of the California Holstein Association Holstein News annual magazine! These pages showcase the excellence and diversity of Holstein genetics in our state, and the people behind the far-reaching success of our local Holstein industry. It is my pleasure to be involved in this organization and to be part of this ‘Holstein Family’. The key to what makes our industry and association special is the people involved. Their passion, family values, hard work and camaraderie exist no matter where you travel. Because of the black and white cow, we have all been fortunate enough to make friendships near and far. It is with these invaluable relationships that we enjoy the Holstein business. Thank you to those individuals who have volunteered to assist in organizing and putting on our activities over the course of the past year. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated in creating the successful events enjoyed by all! Also thank you to our allied industry sponsors for their continued support in donations. The future of our club is bright- as the California Junior Holstein Club encourages youth and develops skills for them to lead the Holstein and agriculture industries. The programs we offer help shape these enthusiastic young people into confident, articulate ambassadors for the dairy community. From the responsibilities of raising show animals, to knowledge and competitiveness gained in dairy bowl and dairy jeopardy, presence in public speaking and networking at events, our junior members have the confidence and talent to go far in whatever they pursue.
The California Holstein Association’s goal continues to be to advertise and promote our members’ Registered Holsteins to enthusiasts around the country and internationally. We aim to help them capitalize on the consistent added value Registered Holsteins provide in this always evolving industry. This magazine is available online year round on our website www.caholstein.com and distributed throughout the year nationwide. Additional copies are available from the office upon request if you have an opportunity to share our publication with visitors. We worked with a new designer and editor to produce this year’s premium magazineThank you to Julie Ashton and her team at Julie Lynn Designs. I invite you to take part in our various activities in the upcoming months, and I look forward to working with you all. Please don’t hesitate to contact me should you have any questions about our Association, or would like to get involved. Doug Maddox Memorial Senior Breeder Award By Julie Ashton
The most prestigious award that a member of the California Holstein Association can receive is the Doug Maddox Senior Breeder Award. He is a leader in the dairy industry, has a tremendous herd of Holsteins and exemplifies family values. Dino Migliazzo of Atwater, CA, is just one team member of Team Migliazzo behind Dinomi Holsteins. Located in the San Joaquin Valley in California, Dinomi Holsteins is a dairy focused on using the resources they have to become as efficient as possible. With this theory comes the idea that, instead of growing their herd’s population, they work to improve the animals they have through genetics and management. Team Migliazzo is successfully accomplishing these goals and the accomplishment of the goals set out by Team Migliazzo are rightfully reflected in the herd’s genomic numbers. Dinomi Holsteins was started in 1957 by Larry and Irene Migliazzo and has been at their current location since 1967. Today, brothers Dino and Dante and their families are partners in the 800-cow registered Holstein operation located in Atwater, CA. The family owns 250 acres, which supplies 65% of the herd’s forage for the year, and all the hay and grain is purchased. Recently, the family has also diversified the dairy, adding an almond orchard to their operation. The herd is 100% Registered and to date, there have been 56 homebred Excellent and 435 homebred Very Good cows. The current BAA on 300 cows is 103.6. They’ve also bred 45 Gold Medal Dams and 19 Dams of Merit, along with one Gold Medal Sire. The philosophy of the farm is simple. “We make our money selling milk,” said Dino. “You have to realize what your market is and go after it the best you can.” Making milk is something the Dinomi herd continues to excel at. This spring, the herd boasted an impressive 37,148-lb. milk, 3.6%F 1337F 3.1%P 1169P ME average on 772 lactations. Currently, 48% of the herd is made up of 2-year-olds who are averaging over 100-lbs. milk with 4.0% fat. Milk is shipped to Hilmar Cheese, so components are a key factor. “Our goal is for the herd to milk like Holsteins, but test like Jerseys,” commented Dino. The farm consistently is one of the top for milk production in the county and has over 50 California production records and 15 National production records. They’ve also had 23 National and 30 Regional Elite Performers. The farm boasts 41 cows with lifetime milk greater than 200,000-lbs. and 599 cows with lifetime milk greater than 100,000-lbs. Genomics are Key While milk production and components are a focus, genetics are truly the foundation for everything the Dinomi herd stands for. An 11-year Progressive Genetics Herd Award winner, the average CTPI of the herd is +2251 CTPI. The numbers for the genomic tested animals in the Dinomi herd are +2259 GTPI, +507NM, +1004M, +52F, +34P, +4.2PL. The breeding philosphy includes a balance of extreme production with solid health traits while maintaining functional type. To achieve this balance, the team selects bulls they have confidence in. Don’t Forget About Management “If you’re going to do it, make sure you do it right,” was a phrase often said by Larry Migliazzo. Both Dante and Dino have taken that philosophy to heart, whether it’s in building a new commodity shed or cow management. And everything they do, they do with the intent of producing more milk. “You have to wear a lot of different hats during a day,” noted Dino.” One “hat” that the farm is letting someone else wear involved their heifer raising. Calves have been raised at a calf ranch for the past 15 months, and so far, they haven’t had any issues. “More calves are raised off-farm than ever before. Research shows that the first 90 days of a calf’s life set her up for the rest of her life,” he added. By allowing a specialist to raise their heifers, the team can focus more on the milking herd and managing those groups to produce as much milk as possible. 34 | California Holstein News 2017
The Cows Speak for Themselves While the numbers can look good on paper, the real test lies with the cows. One cow that has been a model student for the family is Dinomi Offroad Riley-ET EX-94 2E GMD. With a best record over 47,000 lbs. The Dino & Dante Migliazzo families milk, and a lifetime over 190,000 lbs. milk, she is a former cover girl for Semex’s Offroad and was featured in the Walk of Fame at the 2009 World Ag Expo in California. In 2010, Ryley was the 1st 4-year-old, Grand Champion, Best Bred & Owned and Best Udder of the California State Holstein Show. After that, she was flushed heavily to Atwood, Doorman, Gold Chip, Delta and Kingboy. Her first four classified daughters are all Excellent and she has eight Delta yearlings the team anticipates will be standouts as well. There are several standouts from the Ryley familing including Dinomi Atwood Ryley 9312-ET EX-90. She has two Very Good Doorman daughters including Dinomi Drman Ryley-ET VG-87 VG-MS 3Yr. Drman Ryley is +2211GTPI +3.93T (#2 PTAT Cow in the U.S.) and is contracted to Helix by Accelerated Genetics. She also have a Silver son and Monterey daughter who are both contracted. One of their standout Numero Uno daughters is Dinomi Num Uno Dina 9604 EX-90 EX-MS DOM +2383 GTPI. Her GP-82 2yr Old daughter is +2728 GTPI and has an AltaSuperstar son that will be released this fall by Alta Genetic. She also had the #1 AltaSuperstar female after the 8/16 proof run and today is +2774GTPI +98F +2.62T. A Montross maternal brother to Num Uno Dina is Dinomi AltaDiverse +2686GTPI. He is the #22 DWP$ bull of the breed and was #4 at his highest. Their dam is an EX-91 Super with 48,000 lbs. milk 3.8% fat 3.1% protein. Next dams include EX-90 Goldwyn, EX-92 DOM Shottle then Dinomi DieHard 5258 EX-91 GMD DOM, who is the dam of numerous sons in A.I. and daughters who have produced A.I. sires. The former #1 Goldwyn son in Canada, Dinomi Goldwyn Darius-ET, hails from this family as well. Outstanding Cows and an Outstanding Family The Dinomi herd wouldn’t reach the success that it’s attained without the people behind the scenes. Dino and his wife Alicia have three grown children – Loren, Vincent and Deena – who have all been involved in the farm growing up and are continuing their involvement in agriculture post school. Dino is a past president of the California Holstein Association, serves on several committees for National Holstein Association USA and is a past chairman of the Yosemite Farm Credit Board. Dante is married to Kristi and is the current chairman of the California Milk Advisory Board. With his involvement on that board, promotion is very important to the family as well. “We need to figure out a way to tell our story and lessen the disconnect between farmers and consumers,” Dino commented. The outstanding herd of cattle that Team Migliazzo has bred and developed truly wouldn’t be what they are today without the intense management and care given by everyone at Dinomi Holsteins. This well-balanced herd is one of the best around and continues to improve based on precise decisions made at the genetic level. Again, according to the patriarch of the family, “If you’re going to do it, make sure you do it right,” and this family certainly has been doing just that and more.

A.J. Quist Memorial Young Breeder Award
By Kathleen O’Keefe
The 2017 California Young Breeder award winners are well-known to California Holstein Association members. They took similar paths in their youth - being active in the show ring through 4-H, active in sports, pursuing secondary degrees all while maintaining their love for the registered dairy cow. Adam and Lacey Van Exel of Lodi, CA, have continued to share that passion with others though the show ring, judging, helping with the state sale, state show and other events. While they don’t seek the spotlight, their continuing efforts to assist in organizations and events away from their dairy have made them key players in the state purebred business. Adam, 36, grew up on his family’s operation, Van Exel Dairy in Lodi, CA, home of Exels Holsteins and Jerseys. Very active in 4-H and sports as a youth, he graduated from Lodi High School in 2000 and went on to attend Modesto Junior College. At MJC, he pursued the challenge of post-secondary dairy judging to great success as he was a member of the team that placed 2nd at World Dairy Expo in 2002 and 1st at NAILE, where he was the 2nd high individual. After graduation, Adam returned home and began working at the dairy. Lacey, 33, discovered an early love for the show ring as she exhibited her first dairy animal when she was eight years old. A graduate of Gustine High School, she was also active in 4-H and sports. Like Adam, she also continued her judging career at the next level when she enrolled at Cal Poly, a university with a prestigious dairy judging program. Lacey was a member of the team that placed in the top five at NAILE in 2004 and in the top ten at World Dairy Expo in 2005. While earning her Dairy Science degree at Cal Poly, she was active in the Los Lecheros Dairy Club, participated in the Dairy Challenge and Western Bonanza before graduation in 2005. She worked at USDA and a local winery before becoming full-time part of the dairy in 2007. Adam now oversees the dairy operation and the grape fields, while Lacey maintains the cow records and manages the calves and ET work done at the farm. She also takes the lead role in looking after the show heifers, which are kept in a small barn behind their house. They knew each other from showing cows over the years, but really started connecting at a California Holstein Convention about 14 years ago where Lacey won a door prize - a Black & Decker stud finder. Seeing no use for it in her life, she gave it to the overjoyed guy sitting next to her…and the rest is history. “I will tell you that the stud finder was right on the money - that thing led her to a life long stud!”, laughs Adam. They began dating and eventually were married in 2006. Now the parents of three children - Madison (7), Atlee (6), and Henry (1) - they have seen ups and downs, like most married couples. “We aren’t always walking on sunshine. I believe you have to work on your relationship and hash out the bigger problems, while letting the little ones roll off. But throughout the clouds and rain, those struggles let you see how far you’ve come and grown together. It makes you appreciate the sunny days more because you know how much you did together to get to them”, explains Adam. Both Adam and Lacey credit Mike Deaver as being an important mentor while they were learning the ropes in the show ring. “For me, growing up with mostly grade cattle on our small farm, my parents would purchase calves for me at purebred sales and that’s how we got to know Mike. He was the one that pointed our family in the right direction. He taught me what to feed, how to grow hair, etc.”, notes Lacey. Adam agrees about the importance of Mike’s input. “Mike was a big influence on me too. He was one of the best fitters and always took time to teach me something. He always encouraged me to try things that I didn’t think I was able to do, out of fear or not knowing how.” Adam also credits Joey Airosa as a steadying hand in his life. “Joey has always been there since I can remember going to the bigger shows. As my father’s friend, he had to ride the fence line 36 | California Holstein News 2017
of being hard on me and also giving me that kind word when things weren’t going so good. He was always that calming voice in the back of my head and could make me laugh even at the worst situations!” The reputation of quality registered cattle carrying the Exels prefix is well-known, but Adam and Lacey have a couple individual cows that are particular favorites. One Adam, Lacey, Madison, Atlee & Henry Van Exel is Will-Tattoo Lacey EX-91, a Goldwyn daughter owned with Will & Amy Iager that won the CA State Holstein Futurity in 2012. The second is their favorite Jersey, Whitney Oaks K Beth EX-93, a cow that has made her name in the show ring as Grand Champion of the CA Jersey Spring Show in 2015, as well as placing 2nd in the Senior 3-Year-Old class at World Dairy Expo and being named ABA Reserve All-American Senior 3-Year-Old in 2014. Breeding the next generation of good ones is an ongoing challenge as genomics continues to change the industry. “When we are looking for ‘show bulls’, we are dealing with a very small selection. A few years ago there were 20-25 bulls that could fill that niche, but now it seems there are only 3-4 bulls that fit that mold”, notes Adam. Rapidly changing sire lineups are another challenge. “Then you start with the production side of the equation and what is your preference? Milk? DPR? Fat? GTPI? SCS? NM$? There are so many things that uniquely qualify these bulls, it makes your job very tough to glean what bull will throw the real traits we are looking for. We have a new hot bull every three or four months and with the rapid sire turnover just in the time of a cow’s gestation period, it makes it hard to assess these bulls completely.” They love farming in California, but acknowledge the state is making dairying more and more difficult. “The state is making it hard to want to dairy here, so the number of cows is probably going to get smaller. But where you have people that work as hard as dairymen do, there will always be a passion for cows. I hope that we can keep up the level of competition that we have seen at our state show these last couple of years. It has been great seeing people that are new to showing really dive into it and do it the right way with the assistance of people that know and care about cows”, Adam states. In spite of the challenges in the Holstein business and in dairying, both Adam and Lacey love their life on the farm. “Five and ten years from now, we want a healthy family where the kids are free to chase their passions, what ever they want to do. If their passion is for the dairy, we want them to go work for someone else AFTER they finishing college with a business degree. An important part of future success in dairying will be having your nose in the books and making sure things look good to the bank”, observes Adam. On good days and bad, Adam and Lacey, like most dairy producers, feel raising their kids in the business is a real plus. “They get to see mom and dad work hard, be tired, and still get up and smile - still go to church and help coach softball. That’s what makes what we do great. No matter what people say, not everyone is cut out to do this; not everyone has the commitment to do what we do and the great part for us is that the kids get a front-row seat to see if they want to do it as well.”

Junior President Message By Cort Rowley
It has been an honor to represent the California Junior Holstein Association as this year’s President. For those of you that I have not had the pleasure of meeting my name is Cort Rowley and I am from Visalia, CA. My project began at the age of six and currently consists if twenty registered Holsteins, Jerseys, and Brown Swiss. This next year I will be attending Oklahoma State University with a major of Pre- Veterinary Medicine with an emphasis in Dairy Cattle. I have been fortunate enough to be involved in this wonderful association for the past eight years, participating in State Dairy Bowl and Dairy Jeopardy Competitions. Each year, our juniors have the opportunity to attend countless events such as State and National Conventions, State Show, Cow Camp, and more, allowing us to gain more dairy industry knowledge and lasting friendships.
On behalf of the Junior Holstein Association Officer Team and our junior members, I would like to thank all of the donors who have made our events possible and for enabling us to travel to National Convention every year and continuing to support us in all our endeavors. Thank you to those who organize our Silent Auction fundraisers at every State Convention and State Show. Another huge Thank You goes to our National Team Coaches, Kirsten Areias and Sarah Zonneveld, and to Kate Teixeira, whose dedication and love for our members has made our association one big family.
This past January, the entire Junior Association gathered at the 2017 California State Holstein Convention, where many juniors competed on Dairy Bowl teams and in Dairy Jeopardy, as well as the Prepared Speech contest and the Folding Display contest, competing for a spot at the National Holstein Convention in Bellevue, WA. Those participants are as follows: Junior Dairy Bowl Team- Timothy Elmer, Rachel Mancebo, Vicki Paolini, and Emma Van Loben Sels; Senior Dairy Bowl- Hayley Fernandes, Jacob Fernandes, Kylie Konyn, and Abbi Prins; Junior Dairy Jeopardy- Lindsay Elmer, Joey Spina, Kaylie Vander Meulen, and Kiara Konyn; Intermediate Dairy Jeopardy- Mackenzie Elmer, Hannah Mancebo, Alyssa Timoschuk; Senior Dairy Jeopardy- Karleen Lopez. We would also like to highlight our Distinguished Junior MembersTony Lopes and Hannah Van Dyk; and our Young Distinguished Junior Member- Hayley Fernandes.
Our association welcomes new junior members every year with open arms. I encourage all young people with a passion for dairy cattle to become members of our association and participate in all of the educational, fun-filled activities available. Our next junior event is Cow Camp at CSU Fresno, in Fresno. Cow Camp is an exciting and engaging few days that include touring Fresno States Dairy Unit and learning many new things. The application can be found online at www. caholstein.com. We would also like to express our gratitude to Mrs. Carol Regusci, our 2017 Honorary Junior Member. We would like to thank her for all of her hard work and dedication to the California Junior Holstein Association. We are a better association because of all your support. I am looking forward to another amazing year! Thank you.

Memorial Awards Brock Jarrett Toledo Memorial Scholarship Winner Kiara Rose Gilardi is the 2017 receipient of the Brock Jarrett Toledo Memorial Scholarship. She is the past president of the CJHA, of which she participated in dairy bowl and dairy jeopardy for the past eight years. Kiara recently graduated from Los Banos High School as Valedictorian. She will attend Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in the fall majoring in Dairy Science. Kiara hopes to become a large animal veterinarian and maintain optimum herd health in order to assist California’s dairy farmers in continuing to produce the highest-quality products. This scholarship was established by the Toledo family in memory of their son, Brock, who died in 1996. It is awarded annually to a graduating senior who shares Brock’s enthusiasm for 4-H, agriculture and love of the livestock industry.
Cortney Borba Memorial Award Aspen Silva is the winner of the 2017 Cortney Borba Memorial Award. She will be a junior this coming year at Modesto High. She is active in her local 4-H, where she serves as President, and Hi 4-H where she is Vice President. She is the incoming Regional Sentinel for Modesto FFA and has played softball for the last two years. She has been showing since she could do peewee at the age of 4. This summer she is looking forward to the fairs as well as hosting a student from Ohio for a week with the local Hi-4-H group and show them the sites in California. Her family is also hosting a student from Germany for the 2017-18 school year. The Borba family honors the memory of their daughter Cortney each year by recognizing the Junior Show Grand Champion exhibitor. Congratulations to this year’s winner!

By Jessica Telgmann
BREEDER OF THE FUTURE GIRL Kylie Konyn, 14, is a six-year member of the 56 Ranchers 4-H Club and California Holstein Association. She is a previous recipient of the Young Breeder Award. She owns Aspire Holsteins, owning 54 registered animals. This prefix came about from her love for the dairy industry, she wants to “aspire and dream big.” Kylie is active in the Junior California Holstein Association, having competed at the state convention for numerous year. In 2016, she competed at National Convention, where she was on the winning Junior Dairy Bowl team and placed 2nd in her speech division. Kylie exhibits passion for the dairy industry throughout her schoolwork, as she focuses many of her projects around dairy cattle. This past year she was able to compete at the State Science Fair with her project in Mammalian Biology, “Does Age Affect the Conception Rate in Dairy Cattle,” where she placed 4th. This talented young lady has held straight A’s from kindergarten through 8th grade, being on Gold Honor Roll nine times thus far. Through 4-H, Kylie has gained lifelong skills that she has been awarded for. She was awarded the Platinum Star this past year, which is awarded
BREEDER OF THE FUTURE BOY Billy Marchy, 14, of Ceres is the 2017 Breeder of the Future Boy winner. Billy is active in Sacred Heart 4-H and Stanislaus Holstein Club. He prides himself on being a fourth generation dairyman who proudly brings animals to fairs to educate the public about the best natural drink, milk! Billy won many awards in the showring this past year, taking home Grand Champion Holstein and Junior and Senior Champion Female at Cow Palace. based on leadership. Record-keeping has also become a skill Kyle shines at; she received high point Intermediate Champion. Serving as club Secretary two years, corresponding Secretary, Co-Chairman for the Christmas Parade and Jr Leader for Veal, Dairy and Poultry projects allows Kylie to help others. Toddling through the barn is where young Kylie got her start in the industry. She loved to follow her dad around the family farm and attributes having younger twin siblings to “being stuck outside.” She became an entrepreneur by trading her labor for dairy cattle, her first being Drummer and Storm. She hopes to continue those deep bloodlines through her herd. Kylie believes that respect is important in our industry. Every day, she strives to be a well respected dairyman like her father. She recognizes that dairy is dwindling, especially in her county, and wants to help dairy farmers to make a good impression on each and every person that she encounters.
three times and is looking forward to attending again this year. He has shown four times at the State Holstein Show and participates in the Holstein Activities at the State Fair. He enjoys attending the State and National Convention and said this last year was truly an honor. He learned more about Dairy Bowl, Jeopardy and the Speaking Contests; he also became inspired to one day try for an officer position within the Junior Holstein Association. In 4-H, Billy has received his Gold Star, been Treasurer and Secretary, 4-H Teen Leader, High Seller for Chicken BBQ and awarded Gold in local project competition. He was also named the Outstanding 4-H Dairy Exhibitor at the California State Fair in 2015, Principals Honor for sixth, seventh and eighth grade and proficiency in Dairy levels one, two and three. Billy enjoys working side by side his father on the family’s farm. He takes pride in all of his animals in and out of the showring. He does chores every morning before heading to school for the day. He enjoys seeing the industry prosper.
Through the Junior Holstein Association, Billy has attended Cow Camp
YOUNG BREEDER OF THE FUTURE GIRL Kiara Konyn, 10, of Escondido, is the 2017 winner of the Young Breeder of the Future Girl Award. The fourth grader is a third year member of the San Diego 56 Ranchers 4-H Club and the California Junior Holstein Association. She enjoys helping others; through school she attended a Compassion Experience which opened her eyes to third world countries culture. Showing has become more than a hobby to Kiara, as she exhibited her cattle at the Western Classic, East County Junior Fair, State Holstein Show, San Diego County Fair, Ramona Fair, So Cal Fair and the Western Grand Nationals tallying multiple Reserve Heifer and Reserve Supreme Champion Awards. Showmanship has become her specialty, as she 58 | California Holstein News 2017
won showmanship at all but one of her shows, noting she edged out 40 other participants at the Western Grand Nationals. Within the family herd, Kiara owns 30 animals and leases another nine. The herd average score is 81 while maintaining an average of 24,810 pounds of milk with 902 pounds of fat and 779 pounds of protein. Kiara enjoys Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy, and Dairy Speech Competition. This coming year she hopes to represent California at the National Holstein Convention in Washington.

National Distinguished Junior Member Semi-Finalists TONY LOPES, GUSTINE, CA “I am a Dairy Farmer. It is as much of who I am as anything else I have written on this page,” commented Tony Lopes of Gustine, CA. His families raised 3200 cows, while he owns 50 Registered Holsteins. “I stand fourth in a line of Portuguese Dairy Farmers, and owe everything I have in my life to the Holstein Cow.” Tony has competed numerous times at the state and national level in dairy bowl and dairy jeopardy, having won national titles in Junior and Senior Dairy Bowl, and Intermediate Senior Dairy Jeopardy. “While competing well at National Holstein Conventions is exciting and noteworthy, I believe that what I do the other 360 days of the year holds precedence over success at competitions. This includes my work on the dairy, my role in the CJHA, and my education at Cal Poly. Growing up, I lived a very typical “farm kid” lifestyle, with the entire dairy serving as my stomping grounds and first classroom. Understandably, over time, my duties changed. As of the end of elementary school, I no longer could spend the summer in a baseball cap, shorts, a tee-shirt, and rubber boots, checking my cows, building forts and befriending the dairy cats. I was then looked upon to assist wherever necessary, and as I grew, so too did my responsibilities.”
HANNAH VAN DYK, TULARE, CA “I cannot remember a day in my life that did not involve the activities of a dairy farm,” is how Hannah Van Dyk starts her story of Junior Holstein work. “In April 2013, my family sold Shining Star Holsteins, due to tough economic conditions. The months leading up to the sale were very hard for my family. However, in order to keep my project thriving, I had to continue to push forward and grow. I chose 10 of my lactating cows that were genetically superior to the rest and successful in the show ring and I was able to move them to a dairy farm ten minutes from my home.”
His responsibilities on the farm include sire selection and field work and through his years of hard work, he has been able to invest his wages back into growing his herd of Registered Holsteins. He has held many offices at the state level over the course of his involvement, including one term as state President. “Ultimately, it would be a dream to follow the footsteps of my role model Doug Maddox and become the President of Holstein Association USA.” “After completing my studies in June of 2018, I hope to explore opportunities to receive a Master’s degree in Business Administration or begin my career in an industry support role, before coming back to and continuing my family’s legacy in dairy farming. Being a fourth generation dairy farmer and the oldest son of a dairy farmer doesn’t always mean that you will want to carry on the family business, or love the cows. It just so happens that I do, and I am incredibly thankful to have had this passion honed by my involvements in Holstein Association USA.” with one another, and I have learned to manage situations even though I am miles away.” She is also very involved in CJHA activities, having traveled to National Convention and earning the national title for Dairy Bowl in 2016. She has served as President of the Junior Association and District 9 Dairy Princess. During high school, she was very active in FFA. Her dedication allowed her to win the State Proficiency Award for Dairy Production Entrepreneurship. She also ended her high school career as a Tulare Western Valedictorian. While at Virginia Tech, she is majoring in Dairy Science with a minor in Spanish. She is active in the Dairy Club, having served as chair of the Showcase Sale this past year. She was also a member of the dairy judging team and hopes to compete at World Dairy Expo this fall.
Hannah was able to keep her Registered heifers and rent facilities 5 minutes from home. She then had the responsibility of caring for them on a daily basis. When she started college at Virginia Tech, she developed an arrangement with the local high school farm to house her cows and heifers. Her father manages the farm and her herd while she is away. “Working with my father while I am away at college has been a blessing. We have strengthened our ability to communicate
“After graduating, I would like to become a sire analysist. I believe that discovering prospective dams and new young sires is a very important part of the dairy industry. I would like to have role in developing our future dairy cattle bloodlines.”
YOUNG DJM FINALIST - HAYLEY FERNANDES, TULARE, CA
junior division of Dairy Jeopardy at the national level.
Hayley Fernandes of Tulare, CA, was one of the eight juniors announced as a Young Distinguished Junior Member Finalist. Her father and his brothers run and operate several dairies located throughout California. Even though she does not live near her family’s dairy, she has found ways to still be involved. Her current herd inclues 15 animals, of which five are bred and owned. She has exhibited at the local and state level and one day hopes to walk the colored shavings in Madison, WI, with an animal she has bred. Her favorite Junior Holstein activity is Dairy Bowl, and she has been fortunate enough to be on a winning team at the state competition as well as earning a national title in the junior division. She also won the 64 | California Holstein News 2017
“The connections I have gained through Holstein Association has given me access to many of these opportunities”
Hayley plans to attend Cornell University majoring in animal science with a concentration on dairy science and political science. She plans on being involved in the dairy industry post graduation as well as continue to expand her show herd. “I have received many plaques from contests, but I’ve come to realize that my greatest accomplishment is learning a lifetime of knowledge in a few short years,” commented Hayley in her YDJM story.

Remembering Friends LUELLA BOONE By Linda Langerwerf, Durham, CA Roy Boone was a Holstein breeder from Orland, CA. He was a leader in the Northern California Holstein Breeders Association. He developed a herd and the DeeBeeDee prefix that was know throughout California and even nationwide. He was a California Senior Breeder whose name goes back in California Holstein archives with Nunes, Quist and Maddox. Roy passed away several years ago but his name is the prelude to this story. I once wrote that Roy Boone was a Legend…something I still believe. To many legend stories there is a heroine…someone who stands with, maybe slightly in the shadows, and supports this man through the years. Such was Roy’s wife, Luella Boone. Luella was a petite woman who loved the cows they bred and developed. She was a mother to Doug (former CHA director and state convention chair), Bill and Debbie. This writer saw Debbie for the first time in a fair show ring. She was poised with a smile on her face and not a hair out of place as she glided her cow to first place in the showmanship line. I wanted to be her! But back to Luella, her grace extended to this daughter, who had clearly inherited her father’s love of bovines. Luella guided her daughter to lessons of impeccable appearance…even in a showring full of kids and cows. Luella passed away this past week at the age of 96. She was married to a legend, lived as a heroine and left a legacy of family and friends in Northern California and the Holstein archives. Luella Boone passed away peacefully at home in the Capay District on the morning of December 21, 2016. She died following a brief illness surrounded by family. She lived until just 25 days shy of turning 97 years old. She is survived by son Doug Boone (Connie), daughter Debbie Pata (Ric) and daughter in law, Charlene Boone (Bill), sister, Melba Gollnick (Irville). She was predeceased by her husband Roy Boone, son Bill Boone and grandson, Todd Boone. There are forty-eight living descendants, including children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Luella Francis Reiser was born in the small town of Tripp, SD, of German speaking parents on January 15, 1920. Luella moved with her family at the age of five from South Dakota to northern California in 1925. She spent her entire life from that point on in the Capay District north of Hamilton City. She attended grammar school in Capay and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1938. Until her death, Luella was the
FRANK LOUIS PAULO Frank Louis Paulo passed away at his Pismo Beach home on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at the age of 87 surrounded by his family. Frank was born in Hanford, CA, on November 17, 1929, to Frank D. and Helen Gomes Paulo. For 65 years, Frank was a devoted husband to his one and only love, Irene. Frank and Irene along with his brother, Edward H. Paulo, began the family dairy in Hanford and raised their five children on that ranch. 68 | California Holstein News 2017
oldest living graduate of Hamilton Union High School. In 1942, Luella married Roy Boone, literally, the “boy next door” and moved to a neighboring farm, spending the rest of her life less than a mile from where she was raised. Over the years, Roy and Luella developed one of the nation’s finest herds of registered Holstein cows, raised a herd of registered Hampshire hogs, ran a commercial Hereford cow calf herd and farmed extensively in the Capay area. Roy and Luella raised their children on the farm, teaching them the value of hard work, persistence and education. Those values continue to be passed down to succeeding generations. Luella loved talking with people, being active and volunteering. For many years, she volunteered in the nursery at the Evangelical Free Church in Orland. She was a volunteer at Enloe Hospital as a “pink lady” for nearly twenty years and also volunteered with the Capay Women’s Club at the Glenn County Fair and helped check in thousands of fair entries over the years. At the annual Capay Fireman’s dinner she ended the buffet line with passing out bread and a smile. Luella was an avid gardener and spent hours tending to her extensive flower gardens. She loved animals, and for years was the point person in Capay for orphaned or injured birds. She loved to travel and treasured the memories of cruises in the Caribbean with her sister Violet Quiring, West Point graduation for her grandson, the Summer Olympics in Atlanta with her companion Marty Passaglia and her grandchildren’s weddings in Hawaii. She enjoyed hearing her grandson sing in Hawaiian, the annual Avenue of Lights, road trips and a good bar of chocolate. She greatly appreciated the world around her, particularly rainbows and sunsets. Luella’s greatest love was her family. She was simply known as Grandma Boone to most. She proudly shared her “brag books” with friends and visitors and gave selflessly to those around her. She had a tremendous personality, had a “practical,”“no-nonsense,”“straight-forward” approach to life. Luella was sharp and self-reliant to the end, always caring more for others than for herself. She will be greatly missed by all. Throughout her long life, Luella never lost faith and held true to her Lord and Savior. Her service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28 at the Evangelical Free Church in Orland. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to HUHS Old-timers Scholarship Program, P.O. Frank was a member of several groups including the State and National Holstein Association, Pismo Moose Lodge, Knights of Columbus, Kings Country Club, Hanford Fraternal Hall Founders Group and many more. Always a dedicated Son, Brother, Husband, Father and Grandfather. Frank is survived by four daughters; Linda Cotta, Karen Brautigam and husband Mark, Jeannette Cardoza and husband Ernie, Renee Brooks and husband Steve; his son, Frank Dean Paulo and wife Donna; twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; a sister Helen Cardoza and husband Eddie and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, his brother, Edward Paulo, and adopted sister Mary Vanderof.
RICHARD A. EASTERSON Richard Andrew Easterson was born August 1, 1929 in Eau Claire, WI. At the age of seven he moved to Alma Center where he was raised by his grandparents, Frank and Edith Adams. He graduated from Alma Center High School in 1947. On June 30, 1949, Dick was united in marriage to Jean Rush at the Rush family home in Black River Falls. The couple began their life together farming in Alma Center, Melrose and Northfield, before moving to their farm in Otter Creek Township, rural Augusta in 1964. When they retired in 1994 the couple moved to Colorado, where he worked as a classifier and consultant to the Holstein Association. In 1988 they relocated to continue work with the association in Fresno, CA. Dick was involved over 40 years with the association. When living in California they always returned to Wisconsin each summer to spend time with family and friends. Dick had made a decision to move back to Wisconsin permanently in 2013, before setting up an apartment he suffered a debilitating stroke which then required the nursing care he received the past 3 years at the Fall Creek Valley Care Center. Dick’s love for his family and dairy farming led to his commitment to the 4-H organization. He was one of the founding fathers of the Thompson Valley Travelers 4-H Club, where he served as a dairy leader and mentor to many. He served as a Holstein judge at county fairs and dairy shows throughout Wisconsin. One of his most memorable involvements was with Stars of Tomorrow. With this program he helped match up registered Holsteins to be raised by 4-H and FFA members. For many years Dick was a part of the “Chain Gang” for the Augusta School District, walking the field and moving the chains at all the home
football games. He also enjoyed serving the district as a school bus driver. Dick and Jean loved to polka and he always claimed he knew how to polka before he could walk. For several years he also sang with a polka choir known as St. Henry’s Polkateers. Dick and Jean were members of the United Church of Christ, College Community in Fresno. Through the church they volunteered their time helping others, often at the soup kitchen. They also volunteered with the Mission Disaster Program. Through this program they helped rebuild a parsonage on an Indian Mission in Nevada, with the clean up after the fires in California, and after a tornado in Oklahoma. They both spent a great deal of time talking with and listening to the victims of the disasters, which was a comfort to so many. Dick will be remembered as a man with a quick wit and a fast come back. Being an only child he appreciated his large loving family that meant the world to him and tried his best to share his love and time with all of them. Dick will be dearly missed by his 5 children, Carol and Ron Strauch of Augusta, Linda Hipkins of McDonough, GA, John and Jeanne Easterson of Osseo, Patricia and Larry Schwoch of Augusta, Marcia and Joe Bauer of Eau Galle; son-in-law, Roger Baier of Eau Galle; 11 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; wife Jean; daughter Orpha Baier; grandson Brian Veenendal; and son-in-law Robert Hipkins. As published in the Eau Claire, WI, Leader-Telegram
