President’s Message

By Anthony Souza

What an amazing year this year has been. One thing is for sure, milk price might off a bit, but the demand for great registered cattle is at an all-time high! Looking back over the last few months, 2018 has started off with a bang. Our 2018 State Convention was held in Sonoma hosted by the Redwood Empire Club and was nothing less than a great time!! The Convention kicked off with host night with a great sale that averaged $4700. Our juniors had a record turnout and our local clubs were represented well. The Convention concluded with the Senior Banquet and the A.J. Quist Award being awarded to great friend of mine, Aaron Matheron. The Doug Maddox Senior Breeder Award was presented to Mike Mulas. Mike was also this year’s Convention chair along with his wife Denise. Mike was very deserving of this award and did a great job in organizing this year’s Convention.

LtoR: Carol Borba, Adam Van Exel, Hank Van Exel, Stan Henderson, Larry Gerber, Stephen Mast, Graisson Schmidt, Anthony Souza & Rodney Paulo. Not pictured Jessica McIsaac.

The State Holstein Show was hosted by the South San Joaquin Club in Tulare. This year’s show was judged by Chad Ryan, WI. We had a record turnout in numbers making our State Show a show everyone wants to pay attention to. Mother Nature graced us with some unpredictable weather at the beginning of the week and blessed us with some great sunshine on show day. I want to congratulate the Borba family with taking home the honors of Grand Champion!! Great cows and great people is what make the third week in April every year very special to our Association!! I would also like to congratulate all our exhibitors that exhibited at Western National in Richmond, Utah. California was well represented! As I mentioned earlier, our junior program is thriving. Whether its in the show ring on the colored shavings or at the National Convention competing in dairy bowl, our California Juniors rock!! I am so proud of our youth that are coming up in the Association. The leadership that is being instilled in these young people is awesome. I would like to wish the best of luck to this year’s dairy bowl and dairy jeopardy teams representing California in Michigan. Our juniors are always the team to beat - keep it up! I would also like to congratulate Alexandra Gambonini for being selected a Semi Finalist for the National Distinguished Junior Member recognition. Best of luck to all our juniors! Finally, I want to extent a big thank you to Kirsten Areias for all she does for our Junior Association. In closing, I want to thank the state Board of Directors for their dedication and time to keep this association one of the best in the country. I want to say a special thanks to our office manager Kate Teixeira for all of her hard work and dedication to this great association. Finally, I want to thank all our membership and colleagues within the dairy industry. It is truly about the people!!! Anthony Souza, CHA President

National Director’s Message By Pat Maddox

First of all I would like to thank all Holstein members for the opportunity to serve you the last six years. It has been both challenging and rewarding as we worked through the ups and downs of the dairy industry. My main hope is that I am leaving the board with the Holstein Association healthy and heading on a great course for the future. Some of the biggest challenges have been on the core programs of Registration, Basic ID and Tags. Although many steps have been taken to streamline these processes, some of the checks and balances are still hurdles on some of our dairies. Our dairies cannot afford to have many disruptions before it starts to affect its efficiency and profitability. The dairy industry is in a constant state of change. Roller coaster milk prices make long term planning and investments difficult. Dairy operations, breeders and memberships are declining. With Fewer members it puts more leadership responsibilities on those that are left and our boards on all levels have more members that are not actively owning cows. All levels, local, state and national are searching for ways to keep meetings vibrant and engaging. We have a very successful youth and young leaders programs but it has been a challenge to transition those young adults into senior leadership. In part because even if they end up back in the industry, very few will actually be dairy operators and Holstein breeders.

These are just challenges, not road blocks. As dairy operations adjust so will the Holstein Association. The new Information Technology (IT) project will revamp all HAUSA programs and processes. It is an opportunity to make improvements now but also have a platform to make future improvements easier. I expect all processes to be easier, all information to be more readily accessible and to be able view and operate everything on a variety of devices. Whether a desktop computer, tablet, cell phone, watch or whatever comes next, we should be able to view information, order products or complete registrations and transfers. Of course all of this takes time, money and really smart, progressive employees. Holstein USA is in a great position to make it all happen. Please support and encourage the new director as we move forward to accomplish great things. If you have any issues or problems you want to discuss, feel free to call: 559-960-5469.

From the Office Manager By Kate Teixeira

Welcome to the 2018 edition of the California Holstein Association Holstein News annual magazine! These pages showcase the excellence and diversity of Holstein genetics in our state, and the people behind the far-reaching success of our local Holstein industry. It is my pleasure to be involved in this organization and to be part of this ‘Holstein Family’. The key to what makes our industry and association special is the people involved. Their passion, family values, hard work and camaraderie exist no matter where you travel. Because of the black and white cow, we have all been fortunate enough to make friendships near and far. It is with these invaluable relationships that we enjoy the Holstein business. The California Holstein Association’s goal continues to be to advertise and promote our members’ Registered Holsteins to enthusiasts around the country and internationally. We aim to help members capitalize on the consistent added value Registered Holsteins provide in this always evolving industry. With this in mind, services are available to aid in advertising for sales and events and we invite you to inquire further. Please mark your calendars with some important dates: Annual Planning Conference where discussion and decisions regarding the State Show, State Convention and all activities takes place- October 20 in Lodi. State Convention is scheduled at the Tachi Palace in Lemoore February 14-16, and will follow a slightly different and exciting schedule. The 2019 State Holstein Show will be held at the Turlock Fairgrounds on April 18-19.

Thank you to those individuals who have volunteered in organizing and putting on our activities over the course of the past year. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated in creating the successful events enjoyed by all! Thank you also to our allied industry sponsors for their continued support in donations. The future of our club is bright- as the California Junior Holstein Club encourages youth and develops skills for them to become leaders in the Holstein and agriculture fields. The programs we offer help shape these enthusiastic young people into confident, articulate ambassadors for the dairy community. From the responsibilities of raising show animals, to knowledge and competitiveness gained in dairy bowl and dairy jeopardy, presence in public speaking and networking at events, our junior members have the confidence and talent to go far in whatever they pursue. Our newest junior program- the CA Junior Holstein Show Contest- is a great way for kids from all areas of the state to get recognition for their work with showing Holsteins. If a youth in your family or club is showing at the fair this summer, please submit an entry! Young dairy enthusiasts also take note of our Cow Camp dates- July 25-27 at Cal Poly, SLO- where we offer a fun few days of learning experiences. This magazine is available online year round on our website www. caholstein.com and distributed throughout the year nationwide. Additional copies are available from the office upon request if you have an opportunity to share our publication with visitors. Thank you to Julie Ashton and her team at Julie Lynn Designs as editor and designers of this year’s premium magazine. I invite each of you to take part in our various activities in the upcoming months, and I look forward to working with you all. Please don’t hesitate to contact me should you have any questions about our Association, or would like to get involved. Follow the California Holstein Association on Facebook and online to stay current on events and news, and in turn, feel free to share your Holstein news with us as well! Best wishes for a great year ahead, Kate Teixeira, office manager CHA

NOTICE At the 2018 Annual Membership Meeting, held on January 26 in Sonoma, members approved a change to the Association’s bylaws. This will restructure the board of directors to be comprised of all atlarge representatives, rather than from specific clubs. The number of directors is reduced from twelve to seven, as some seats were vacant from dissolved clubs. Director terms remain the same- 3 years, and not more than 2 consecutive terms. Article V. Section 2 now reads: The authorized number of Directors shall not be less than five (5) and not more than nine (9), until changed by amendment of these Bylaws duly adopted by approval of the members. The exact number of Directors shall be fixed, within the limits Specified, by resolution duly adopted either by the Board or by the members.

Warhorse - A Veteran I would like to thank the California Holstein Association and those responsible for my receiving the Distinguished Service Award April 20th at the California B&W Show at Tulare. This was greatly appreciated, and I was truly honored to receive such an award. My association over the years with and through the CHA have been most rewarding and enjoyable. In the past years, working for the CHA as Director of Promotions doing the Annual was a great experience. Later, being on your CHA Board of Directors and then serving as President, was most rewarding and a great experience. For 50+ years, I have worked and supported the Holstein cow, other breeds and the dairy industry through the ups and downs of the dairy business and the value of the Registered cow. This has not always been work, but rewarding and fun. I would like thank my understanding wife Marlene and great daughters Christy & Anne for their support in this endeavor. Again, thank you to the California Holstein Association and the many of you for your support over the years for this award.

Doug Maddox Memorial Senior Breeder Award By Julie Ashton

The Doug Maddox Memorial Senior Breeder Award is by far the most prestigious honor a member of the California Holstein Association can receive. A committee of past winners selected Mike Mulas of Arroyo-Vista Holsteins, Sonoma, CA, to be recognized with this achievement. Mike was involved in the Redwood Empire Junior Holstein Club starting in the 1970’s, eventually reaching the office of President. He showed as a junior in 4-H and continued to show with friends and partners as a young adult. As a senior member, he served on the Redwood Empire board, and is once again serving on that board. He is a past member of the California Holstein Association Board of Directors, and has been chair or co-chair of numerous Redwood Empire Club Sales and California State Convention Sales. He is also past President of California DHIA. Arroya-Vista Holsteins consists of 600 organic and 200 conventional Holsteins, along with 325 acres of vineyards. Mike and his wife Denise personally own more than 100 Registered animals under Mulas Dairy Company. Mike was a member of the Blue Boy Syndicate with Ken Callaway and George McClelland. They purchased a heifer by Sunnyside Standout bred by Ocean-View in the State Convention in Stanislaus in 1982. They also purchased Hale-Valley SWD Jambo (EX-90 EX-MS GMD DOM), who went on to the be the #1 CTPI Cow the following year. She has one Excellent and six Very Good daughters and produced over 100,000 lbs. milk lifetime. The Cabernet Syndicate, formed by Mike, George McClelland, Jim & Bill Genasci, Hank Van Exel, Larry Gerber and Jack Lerch, purchased Velvet-View-JK Sunburst-ET (EX-93 3E GMD DOM) for $25,000 at the 2005 California State Convention Sale. Sunburst is from the Sher-Est S-Wind Saturday cow family. Her offspring and their offspring have grossed over $100,000 in sales over

the last decade. She had six Excellent and eight Very Good daughters. She has a Goldwyn daughter sell for $20,000 at the 2009 National Convention Sale and Ruann Dairy has a Domain great-granddaughter that is EX-92. Another syndicate, Redwood-5, purchased Cranehill Advent Fancy-ET (EX-90), who is from the Markwell Bstar E Raven family. Her Red Armani was purchased by Stephen & Patrick Maddox and was the winning Spring Yearling at the 2017 California State R&W Show and the Western Spring National R&W Show. Mike was also a partner with Carl Vierra in Desirebull Genetics, who produced/proved such bulls as Marcrest Encore, Nunesdale Bellwood Abe, Nunesdale Kismet Elation and Ocean-View Roy Shane. He and his wife, Denise, have been married for over 30 years, and were chairmen of this year’s past State Convention held in their hometown. They have two children, Deondra, who is an OR Nurse, and Michael, who is a Vineyard Manager and also manages their family vineyards. Outside of the dairy, Mike has been a Schell-Vista fireman for 38 years, serving as Association secretary for 20 years. He was also an Assistant Football Coach for over 38 years, and was inducted into the Sonoma Valley Hall of Fame in May 2018. The Mulas Family was given the Dairy of the Year Award in 2017 at the Sonoma County Fair and were honored for their water policies and use of recycled water by the Golden Gate Salmon Association.

Velvet-View-KJ Sunburst-ET (EX-93 3E GMD DOM) was purchased by the Cabernet Syndicate and has grossed over $100,000 from the sale of this family’s progeny. 34 | California Holstein News 2018

Mike’s involvement within the California Holstein Association and partnerships with fellow dairymen make him incredibly deserving of this year’s Doug Maddox Memorial Award.

A.J. Quist Memorial Young Breeder Award

By Kathleen O’Keefe

A quick glance at the track record of Aaron Matheron’s early years in the Holstein industry tells you all you need to know about his path to winning the A. J. Quist Memorial Young Breeder Award in 2018. The son of Duane & Barbara Matheron, Aaron and his older brother, Ryan, grew up with an appreciation of sound, hard-working dairy cattle. His career with Registered Holsteins began on his family’s farm, Hilmar Holsteins, where he picked out his first show calf at the age of 9. Aaron did plenty of showing throughout his younger years including efforts in 4-H and FFA where he exhibited cattle at the local fairs all the way to the CA State Show and the Western Fall National Show. A member of the National Champion FFA dairy judging team at Hilmar High School, he also joined the judging team at Cal Poly, where he was an active member in the Los Lecheros Dairy Club before graduating in 2003. He returned home to the dairy and is now a partner in the family operation of Hilmar Holsteins, located in Hilmar, CA. The herd consists of 2000 cows with a 27,530M herd average. Of the 320 Registered Holsteins in the herd, 18 are scored Excellent and 118 are Very Good. Aaron credits his father, Duane, and his uncle, Dale, as being his primary mentors in the business. “They taught me a great work ethic and they were never afraid of new ideas. They’ve always been very progressive and looked for new ways to move forward.” The family also crops 650 acres and has diversified into high-density olive trees to produce olive oil for the local market. The goal at Hilmar Holsteins is to breed the perfect commercial cow: lots of milk with high components, and high DPR meaning cows get bred back. He was an early adopter and full believer in genomics as a herd improvement tool. “The advances in just 10 years is amazing - we can see the results in our herd. I think it’s possible in another 5-10 years to have a herd average of 30,000M

Aaron & Kaylene Matheron and presenter Gilbert Teixeira.

5.0%F 4.0%P with the help of selection through genomics.” Shortly after college, Aaron and two of his friends, Eric Durrer and Eddie Machado, formed the partnership of Trifecta Genetics with the intent of investing in some deep-pedigreed, high-index cattle. They’ve had notable success from their small group of cattle – they’ve bred six Excellent cows, put five bulls into AI, had the $23,000 sale topper at the 2015 Airosa Dairy Extravaganza Sale, and just recently sold a +2861 GTPI Marquee daughter for $70,000 in the 2018 Run for the Roses Sale. And interesting enough, one animal he’s had success with is Cabernet Gwn Shine-ET (EX-90 EX-MS), who has one Excellent and 12 Very Good daughters. She is a granddaughter of Velvet-View-KJ Sunburst-ET. Aaron continues the family tradition of giving back to the industry and the community. He is a Dairy Leader for the Hilmar Colony 4-H Club; has been a part of the California Dairies Inc. Young Leadership Program and serves on the organization’s Quality Committee. He’s a past President and current board member of the Tri-County DHIA, and is also a board member of the Turlock Pentacost Association.

Trifecta N Mallory-ET recently sold for $70,000 in the 2018 Run for the Roses Sale. She was the #1 GTPI and #1 NM$ Marquee daughter of the breed at sale time. 36 | California Holstein News 2018

He enjoys his home life with his wife, Kaylene, and their daughter, Madilyn. Kaylene has a career away from the farm as a dental hygienist. Aaron makes a special point to thank her, “She lets me enjoy what I do for a living at the dairy.” In spite of the milk price and regulatory challenges of dairying in California, Aaron is excited for their family’s future in the state. “If we keep looking forward and stay progressive, there are good times to come here in California!”

The fees to participate in TriStar AMR are a $17 per month herd fee, plus $2 per completed 305-day lactation recorded that is loaded for Registered Holstein® cows, which covers data collection and processing by ATA, and loading into the HAUSA herdbook system. TriStar AMR is not included in Holstein COMPLETE™, and at this time, AMR records are not eligible for recognition programs. Junior President Message By Hayley Fernandes

Hello, my name is Hayley Fernandes, from Tulare. This past January I was elected to serve as President for the California Junior Holstein Association. I have been an active member of the Association since 2013, competing at the state and national level in dairy bowl and dairy jeopardy. This fall, I will be attending Cal Poly SLO to study Dairy Science, where I will still be apart of the Junior Holstein Association. Looking back on this past year, our juniors were very successful at the National Holstein Convention in Bellevue, WA. Our junior dairy bowl team consisting of Timothy Elmer, Rachel Mancebo, Vicki Paolini, and Emma van Loben Sels, all of which were first year competitors, ended with an impressive 3rd place finish. Our senior dairy bowl team consisting of Abbi Prins, Hayley Fernandes, Kylie Konyn, and Jacob Fernandes, concluded in an extremely impressive 2nd place finish, receiving Reserve National Champion titles. In the dairy jeopardy contest, Mackenzie Elmer was the National Champion of the Intermediate division. Lindsay Elmer, Joey Spina, Kaylie Vander Meulen, and Kiara Konyn, represented California in the Junior Division. In intermediate, Hannah Mancebo and Alyssa Timoschuk competed, and Karleen Lopez competed in the Senior division. California claimed all three winners in the Senior division, as Mackenzie Elmer received 1st, Abbi Prins was 2nd, and Hayley Fernandes was 3rd. California also had the honor of being represented by a Young Distinguished Junior Member, Hayley Fernandes, Distinguished Junior Member Semi-Finalist, Hannah Van Dyk, and Distinguished Junior Member, Tony Lopes. Overall, California was highlighted well by its impressive juniors on the National stage. This past January, the Redwood Empire Holstein Association hosted a fantastic state convention. Juniors from across the state got together,

competing in dairy quiz competitions, attended host night activities, and created friendships that will last a lifetime. The goal for many was to receive an elusive spot on the national team to compete this summer in Traverse City, Michigan. The individuals selected to compete include the following: for the junior team, Vicki Paolini, Emma van Loben Sels, Rachel Mancebo, and Reese Renati. For the Senior team, Alyssa Timoschuk, William Claflin, Karleen Lopez, and Timothy Elmer. In the Junior Jeopardy contest, California will be represented by Mykel Mull, Jennifer DeVries, Lindsay Elmer, Kaylie Vander Meulen, and Joey Spina. Jacob Fernandes, Hayley Fernandes, and Hannah Mancebo will all compete in the Intermediate Jeopardy Contest, and Mackenzie Elmer will compete in the Senior Division of Dairy Jeopardy. California is extremely proud of these members, and excited to see them compete! Our next major event will be our annual Cow Camp Activity. This year, Cow Camp will be back at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, from July 25-27, and open to youth ages 9-21. Attendees have the opportunity to learn more about Dairy Science at Cal Poly, partake in dairy related activities, create friendships, and have a very enjoyable time! I am honored to serve the association this year, and excited for the upcoming opportunities! Hayley Fernandes, CJHA President

Breeder of the Future Award Winners BREEDER OF THE FUTURE GIRL

By Jessica Telgmann

Samantha Gambonini, 15, of Petaluma, is the 2018 Breeder of the Future recipient. The freshman is no stranger to the dairy farm or the show ring. Growing up on her family’s dairy, Samantha lives and breathes all things dairy. Samantha began her herd at the age of three, when her father gifted her Gamlake O Man Kazlyn. Her herd has since flourished into 38 animals, including one Jersey to keep the herd colorful. The show ring has become a second home for Samantha, as she is constantly competing. She exhibits her cattle at local, county, state, national, and international shows. Last year, her 5-year-old (Gamlake Destry Sallie) was exhibited at World Dairy Expo, where she took 3rd and Best Bred and Owned in the Junior Show. Also, at the North American International Livestock Exposition, Sallie was 1st in the open and took home 2nd five-year-old and Best Bred and Owned of the Junior Holstein Show. Samantha Also had luck in the showmanship class at NAILE, she was the 5th place individual. Her biggest joy comes from exhibiting Sallie against other elite cattle, knowing that she bred her own animal. Samantha says “I never thought someone that lives on a small dairy like me would ever get the chance to compete in these large shows. This has shown me that my goals can be reached.” She also enjoys judging dairy cattle, and has a keen eye for it. She has even been awarded the opportunity to judge in Scotland for being on the 3rd place team at the International Dairy Judging Contest.

Logan Silveira, Samantha Gambonini, Mykel Mull and Holstein USA Representative Katharine Correia.

YOUNG BREEDER OF THE FUTURE BOY

YOUNG BREEDER OF THE FUTURE GIRL

Logan Silveira, 12, of Chowchilla, is a two year member of his 4-H Club and California Holstein Association. He says his passion for the dairy industry started at age 8, when he started working on his family’s dairy, Silveira Dairy. He would get up each summer morning at 5 A.M. and follow his dad around during chores. One of his first duties was to push up hay with a shovel and later graduated to using the tractor to do the task. He enjoyed helping repair equipment and working on tractors after the cows were fed. From then on, Logan’s responsibilities and passion have grown.

Mykel Mull, 11, of Chowchilla, is the 2018 winner of the Young Breeder of the Future Girl Award. The sixth grader is a second year member of the Merced County Holstein Club, Dixieland 4-H Club, and the California Jr Holstein Association. She isn’t your average dairy farmer’s daughter, actually her family doesn’t dairy any longer. Mykel decided she wanted to rejoin the dairy industry and she funded her first heifer purchase with proceeds from her Boer goat herd. She not only has 8 dairy heifers, but also 13 Pygmy, 19 Dairy, and 49 Boer goats.

As soon as he could, Logan joined 4-H and started raising his own heifers. He walks them frequently, sometimes twice a day. To date, he owns six Registered Holsteins. In May 2017, he won the Supreme Champion Yearling Heifer at the Chowchilla Fair with his first replacement heifer named Annie. Some family friends mentioned that he may like Dairy Bowl, so he joined the Merced Dairy Bowl team and that was his first introduction to the California Junior Holstein Association. He competed in Dairy Bowl and Dairy Jeopardy at the 2017 State Convention. He was the 1st place written exam winner, being the only contestant with a perfect score. His Novice Dairy Bowl Team also won 3rd at the convention. That first experience really lit his internal fire for the competition. Judging has become one of Logan’s favorite competitions, that may be accredited to his good placings in contests. He has competed at Holiday Dairy, Western Classic, and Fresno State Red Wave Sale Judging Contests. He consistently placed in the top four at all the competitions he competed in last year. Judging has also helped him to have a keen eye while selecting his animals from the family herd. He and his father are also working on his breeding selection choices.

Junior Holstein Association has become a significant piece of Mykel’s life. She enjoys the many opportunities that it provides; she’s active in showing, Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy, Display Board, workshops, and both State and National Convention. One of Mykel’s favorite dairy experiences was competing in Dairy Jeopardy and Display Board, with her winning Scientific Board, at National Holstein Convention at Bellevue, Washington in June, 2017. She says the friends she has made through Dairy Jeopardy and Dairy Bowl feel like an extended family. In the show ring, Mykel has competed at the Madera District Fair, Chowcilla Fair, and Los Banos Fair. She has added to her show string with new heifers she purchased the State Holstein Sale. This year, the young competitor is excited that her first heifers are now bred and will be calving in shortly. Mykel is not only active in Junior Holstein; she also keeps busy with her 4-H and school activities. She not only exhibits dairy heifers at the fair, but also her goats, beef cattle, pigs, sheep, and Vet Science and Community Service Projects. At school, she is an Honor Roll student, a Student Council Representative, and a competitive player in the History and Science fairs.

DISTINGUISHED JUNIOR MEMBER SEMI-FINALIST ALEXANDRA GAMBONINI, PETALUMA “My involvement on the farm as a young girl was the spark that ignited my interest and passion for the dairy industry,” wrote Alexandra Gambonini in her essay for the National DJM contest. “Since then, I have experienced and learned so much about this industry that I love and have been able to completely enrich myself with its many opportunities.” Alex Gambonini is the daughter of Frank and Stacey, and has two sisters, Frankie and Sammie. She is a junior at Cal Poly, double majoring in Dairy Science and Agricultural Business. After graduating, she hopes to either return to the family dairy farm in Petaluma, or attend graduate school to receive or Masters in Dairy Nutrition or Business Administration. She grew up on her family’s dairy, where they milk about 250 organic Holstein cows. “Gamlake Dairy is the spark that ignited my true passion for the dairy industry and the Holstein cow,” she writes. Alex has had a passion for the Holstein cow her entire life. Her father bought Alex her first registered calf at the Redwood Empire Sale when she was just one, and he gifted her another animal when she was 8. Since then, she has built a herd of cattle that has earned her state and national recognition. This past fall, APGambo Atwood Keenan was the winning Junior 3-year-old, Intermediate Champion and Bred & Owned Grand Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show, an accomplishment that Alex has had her eye on for years. “My dream that I had since I was a young girl finally came true. On top of that, Keenan’s ancestry goes back to one of the average cow families

that my dad had originally given me that allowed me to eventually breed and grow into a champion.” Showing is not Alex’s only passion for the dairy industry either. She has participated in Dairy Bowl, where she has won both the State and National competition, as well as Dairy Jeopardy, where she won the Senior Division in 2016. She has also served as President of the CA Junior Holstein Association and is the Chairman of the Holstein Association Junior Advisory Committee. She is also an avid dairy judger. She has traveled to Madison, WI, for the National 4-H Contest where she was 5th overall. Her FFA chapter was the National Champion and they earned a trip to the International Dairy Judging Contest in Edinburgh, Scotland. She is also on Cal Poly’s collegiate dairy judging team. “From my first steps on Gamlake Dairy to my commitments in agricultural associations, leadership roles, and competitions, I am confident that the dairy industry is where my future lies. I am incredibly thankful for the opportunities that I have been given and for the passion I have developed through my experiences on Gamlake Dairy and the Holstein Association.”

Remembering Friends ANTHONY J. EVANGELO Anthony Joe Evangelo of Hanford passed away Monday, January 29, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 64. Anthony was born May 16, 1953 in Hanford to Mamie and Tony Evangelo of Stratford. Anthony devoted his life to dairy farming from a young age, milking cows alongside his uncle, Joe Contente. He would graduate from Lemoore High School in 1971, West Hills College in 1973 and soon after began working for Norman H. Martin Dairy in Stratford as a herdsman. In 1979, he married Teresa Dutra of Hanford and in 1983 they started their own dairy in partnership with her parents. Anthony and Teresa had three sons, Tony, born in 1981, followed by Matthew in 1983 and Jason in 1985. Anthony was fond of all animals, especially his cows and his loyal dog, Duke. He was a man of few words, but carried a tremendous work ethic and a wonderful sense of humor. He cherished spending time with his family and was always ready for a card game or talking Dodger baseball with fellow fans. Anthony was a member of PFSA #138 Stratford and regularly attended mass. Anthony is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Teresa, sons Tony (Carolina) of Visalia, Matthew (Lauren) of Hanford, and Jason of Hanford; five sisters, Alice Randall of Visalia, Mary Evangelo of Lemoore, Patsy (John) Noel of Exeter, Diane (Arnie) Schaffer of Santa Barbara, JoAnn (Steve) Black of Pleasanton; three brothers, John (Barbara) of Lemoore, Joey (Lucia) of Hanford and James (Annette) of Hanford; uncle Tony (Naoma) Contente of Sunnydale, Texas; father-in-law Myron Dutra of Hanford, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. ROSEMARIE VIERRA It is with great sadness that the family of RoseMarie Vierra announces her sudden passing at 4:24 am on Thursday, May 3, 2018, at the young age of 74. Sweet, classy, beautiful RoseMarie was born Jan. 5, 1944, in Hanford, CA to John and Rose Muniz of Lemoore, CA. RoseMarie married her “Mr. Wonderful” husband, Lloyd Vierra, in 1962, raised three children, and

resided in Gustine, CA for 46 years. She was the best: wife, mother, sister, homemaker, passionate gardener, smooth dancer, active member of the Gustine Pentecost and Our Lady of Miracles Societies. RoseMarie was well-known for her baking specialties. Hand-picked Patterson apricots became pies, cobblers, and jams, anticipated at family functions, bringing top dollar at charity auctions. Her soft Portuguese sweet bread rolls gained similar renown; cookies and loaf breads always ready for family visitors. Her garden was her daily joy; her favorite place to toil and spend time, her talent and passion leaving an abundance of bloom and color; a haven for the birds she loved; her Eden. Gifted with creativity, RoseMarie applied her talents toward floral adornments of “Our Lady”, the central statue for the O.L.M Portuguese Festa. And could she dance. Light-on-her-feet from honeymoon to recent days, she and favorite dance partner, Lloyd, delighted friends as he led her around the floor to swings and two steps. Quiet. Poised. Undeniable radiance and warm smile. Our RoseMarie. RoseMarie will be forever remembered by her husband of 55 years, Lloyd Vierra, and his children, Andrew (Robin) Vierra, Mary Beth Vierra, and Bridget Vierra. RoseMarie will also be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Jonathan Satterfield and Matthew Satterfield, by her brother Ronald (Nancy) Muniz, her sisters, JoAnn (Joe) Billitti, Nadine (Craig) Buswell, Sophia Muniz, and Mary Theresa Muniz, brother-in-law Eugene (Carolyn) Vierra and sister-in-law, Ines (Frank) Martin. RoseMarie will also be forever remembered by her nieces and nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

RoseMarie is preceded in death by her parents John N. Muniz and Rose Rocha Muniz of Lemoore, CA. Her family and friends remember her as “a beautiful heart,” “one in a million,” “Sweet RoseMarie,” and “a classy lady.” Her sweet nature, her sparkle and infectious giggle, her playful spunk and love of a big laugh will be dearly remembered. She was the center of her children’s world, but she’ll always be her husband’s “Pretty Woman.”
