Market McVinney Auditorium 018

ISOLATED URBAN ISLAND The Cathedral Square, located between Downtown and Upper South in Providence, was the center of the pedestrian-oriented urban fabric. But now it has blocked the two areas entirely because the I-195 has interrupted the circulation. There are only a few bridges connecting both areas now. The McVinney Auditorium, with two entrances facing to two opposite directions, was almost demolished by the government. But it has the potential to reactivate the square and help this area to be regenrated.

This area has been redesigned many times, most recently by I.M.Pei, who attempted to create a “funnel” between two areas in order to make the square dominant in the downtown. A new project in this building must imply the historic importance of the Cathedral, continuing Pei’s intention and initiating new intervention.

SECTION In summer, the outer wall of the first floor will be entirely open, making the whole building become the “funnel between the two areas. The gentle downslope of the main ramp, the continuous material and the welcoming opening will naturally lead people directly to the square, not to mention a grocery market will turn to a new directional pull in this food desert area. 1

PERSPECTIVE Lobby

PERSPECTIVE Exterior & Interior market The complete Cathedral Square will be reactivated again, restoring the original role of the Cathedral and creating a center once more for the neighborhood. People living in this area can buy fresh food from stalls and enjoy lunch and dinner in the restaurants during the daytime. Performance events will fill Cathedral Square with activity at night as well. Also, the market will remind citizens of the old foot-friendly path when pedestrians can easily go through the building to walk from one side to the other.

The Broad Street Synagogue is located in a low-income neighborhood. Young people, mostly aged from 20 to 24, have no jobs after graduating from high school. As the center of three areas in Providence, the Synagogue is proposed to change into an educaiton center for providing education and job opportunities. The original disconnected circulation was designed for confined space. However, in order to organize a new educaiton center, all the connections should be strengthened because it is better for people to choose which space they want to go instead of providing a fixed path.

The circulation should be extended based on the original logic accordingly, leaving these tracks as new space characters. The existing building has strong hierarchy, sequence and proportion. These can still accord with the new functions by reorganizing the space. Big space like auditorium can still be the center of the building and easy to access while small space like classrooms and offices can be on the upper levels at each side of the atrium.

To reconnect the platforms around the atrium, some “bridges” should be created in the center. The existing 45 degree platform axes stick out the existing building, implying new potential functions on these”bridges”.

New closed space can be created by extruding these axes, adding new space for new functions. New open paths can also be created by offsetting them, adding new connections between functions. The shape broke the facade where there were glazed glass, The open french windows has made the building become more open to the public.

Almost all the parts of the existing building was kept, however, the order has changed. The entrance has moved to the side. Instead of going through an enclosed corridor to enter the atrium, people can easily enter the center of the building because the sequential order has been weakened. The front facade changed into an auditorium by making use of the existing stairs.

SECTION A-A’

The original atrium has turned into an interesting space where people on each level can have eye contact with each other from each side. The lecture hall is at the center of the space on the first floor while the classrooms and the offices are on the top floor. Good view would be necessary for the library and the canteen so they are on the second floor.

This center is also accessible for people who are physically challenged. The elevator and the ramp at the entrance and on each level can provide convenience for them.

t Temple tain Buddha’s Relics Palace 016

GIVEN CONDITION To keep the relics of Buddha, the Buddhists built the underground palace. Generally they will build a "STUPA" on the palace for worship ceremony. In this project, I designed a temple on the palace with the 'STUPA' as the prototype. Each step of the worship ritual is the soul of each room. After the visit of this stupa, the visitors can complete the worship ritual to the Buddha unintentionally.

REFLEC

Urban Exhibition a Adaptive Reuse of 20

CTION

about 9/11 Attack Waterplace Tunnel 017

CURATORIAL STATEMENT Wall of Hope, the hundreds of hand-painted tiles have been removed from the Waterplace Tunnel in Providence due to the tear and wear. In memory of the September 11 Attack, these tiles have stayed here since 2002 but only a few people knew the significance behind the facts. The mental projection, rather than the fact itself, has more impact on the public while the tiles cannot convey it. The Reflection explores this internalizing psychological process by presenting both the objects themselves and the space where they are exhibited.

The reflected surface, both physically and mentally, will be emphasized in the analogous gestures. The form, the shadow and the material of the selected objects showed the stereotype and subjective impression of the Attack, which stimulates critical thinking among the public. “We may be afraid but we will not live in fear.” This was the epigraph of Wall of Hope. Rather than explanation, the exhibition is to help people experience themselves. Only with the understanding of feelings behind the tragedy can we have the real “ Hope” in our mind.

MAIN EXHIBIT WALL OF HOPE The tile panels were covering both sides of the Waterplace Tunnel. As the connection between the Square and the river, the tunnel stays at an important location. The concentration will be attracted to the center in the Square but shred beside the river.

EXHIBITS SELECTION

1

FACT In this stage, the art pieces were selected to imply 9/11 attack gently.

1

As the beginning of the exhibition, The Twin Towers lighting installation emphasized the negative impression we had by introducing an infinite concave space which similar with the footprints of Twin Towers. Both the people in the Square and on the bridge can immediately have a basic understanding of the main subject, which is quite important to an urban exhibition.

2

Iván Navarro, Untitled (Twin Towers), 2011

2 Jacin Giordano, Cube, 2010

Erich Hauser, 19/81, 1981

Joan Serra, ME-PP-A2-3, 2013

3

The Cube Series are all explorations of unstable or uncontrolled condition which can abstract the collision narratively. Although they are from different artists, they are created in the same form language. The cube by Jacin Giordano was created after multiple damages: pouring, scraping, cutting and tearing. The rough and straightforward result implies the damage on the structure. The cube by Erich Hauser is in a risky balance. Divided lengthwise, he transformed basic elements. The unstable result implies the damage on pipes. The cube by Joan Serra collapsed under the high pressure. The irreversible result implies the damage on decoration details.

REFLECTION In this stage, the art pieces were selected to interpret the fact both objectively and subjectively. After reflecting on our past attitudes, new criticized opinions will be generated.

3

The main art piece, Wall of Hope, set the tone for this stage: Looking back is for looking ahead while looking around is for looking inside.

4

Objectively speaking, all the records, texts or images, all witnessed the whole tragedy. However, they were actually reflections of some political and cultural problems . The Front Page, collected by Hans-Peter Feldmann, can be seen as a meditation in front of historical representation.

Rhode Islanders, Wall of Hope, 2002

9/11 Artefacts, 2001

4 Identity

Michelangelo Pistoletto, Uomo In Piedi, 1962-1982

Beloved

5

Subjectively speaking, the selected 9/11 Artefacts were exhibited not only in memory of the 7 victims from the Rhode Island, but also to initiate a deep conversation with our inner world. Daily life still goes on so new willpower, motivation and courage have to be found. These artefacts are reminders of existence, not lost. The Mountain and Sea is a simple tight hug between two people. The most simple gesture is the most quintessential expression of our emotions. Now strong inner heart connections have been set up before entering the meditation space.

5

Hans-Peter Feldmann, Antony Gormley, Front Page, 2008 Mountain And Sea, 1987 - 1988

The mirror painting Uomo In Piedi by Michelangelo Pistoletto, criticizes these news. When you look in the mirror, a life-sized image of a man is standing in front of you with his back to you. The reflection is so genuine that you can hardly tell it’s fake.

Property

6

MENTAL PROJECTION In this stage, all the perceptional pressure are released and people finally get a pure land where they can focus on their own opinions.

6

John Margaritis, Walking On Water, 2017

As the final step of the psychological process, this piece is for triggering the final meditation. Walking on water by John Margaritis is using void to fulfil the volume. It is not only a new layer of the water, but also a new layer of the impression in people’s mind.

ERN Mahogony wood table Changeable pattern 2018

Wax, paint or oil are all used for protecting the wood and revealing the authentic wood texture. One type of wood can have various textures when we apply different finish on different grains. Here is the design of a game table that each wood block on the surface has its own unique texture. The user can switch the location of wood “tiles and redesign the new pattern. To achieve the noteworthy color differences on the mahogany, these blocks were covered by three layers of milk paint and three layers of glossy polyurethane.

These legs are an experiment of using woodturners to make four table legs at one time. Four legs were glued together with one piece of newspaper in between at first. Then, with the side view of the leg in front of the turner, four huge wood blocks were turned together so then each of them can be exactly symmetrical. The flat surfaces of these legs were faced to the center so that some simple joints like dominos can still be applied. This table is 28 high, 2 inches lower than normal desk but suitable for a group of people playing games on it.
