ARORA

The world will not evolve past its current state of crisis by using the same thinking that created the situation. -Albert Einstein

2

This simple quote by Einstein triggered and has been steering my journey in the academic and professional realm of architecture and urban design so far. It puts forward the fact that opening our minds to imagination and looking at the numerous possibilties in any situation is crutial in order to transform the world, the way we want it to be. Imagination!- It is a tool to guide us through the possibilities of how the world can be. It is truly fascinating that we hold the power as architects to transform our imagination/drawings into reality. However, as they say, “with great power comes great responsibility.” I try to work on any design project not just with problem solving approach but also exploration/experimentation approach.

Why me? 4

Allround ness

For the last year, I completed multifaceted tasks of various typologies of projects. Not only, I worked on working drawings and renders, but also on BOQs and technical bid documents. I believe architects need a wide range of knowledge along with indepth knowledge of some topics. Understanding various perspectives along with many services and norms involved in a project is essential in architecture projects. As per my previous experience, I consider myself an all-rounded architect.

Bold deci sions

I believe, making bold decisions during design development and execution stages is crucial in any project. Once we set determination to improve the quality of life of our clients, making bold decisions becomes quite effortless. During the design development of an ortho hospital that I previously worked on, I learned to make bold decisions according to site conditions and observations.

Colla bora tion

Successful projects are the result of strategic teamwork. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of team members and working in the best possible manner to utilize resources and skills to their full potential is a key part of any project. For the last 5 years, during college and during professional practice, I have collaborated with multiple team members with an open mind.

Detail orient ation

As Ludwig Mies van der Rohe has said, “God lies in details. “ It is essential to work on intricate details throughout the design development and execution stages of any project. As I have previously worked in a detail-oriented small-scale firm, I am confident in my detail-orientated work. I have learned that we must question our basics and the standard details that we follow to see if there is a better possibility if there can be a unique, more profound detail as per the situation.

I am an Architect at work and enthusiast in life. Shaka Laka Boom Boom (an Indian series with magic pencil which converts drawing to reality) inspired me to pursue architecture in my childhood. With time and experience, I understood the famous proverb “With great power comes great responsibility.” Henceforth, I aspire to serve people and environment with my abilities and acquired skills. I believe that passion is my number one forte in life, hence collaborating with people with the same passion has always been my priority.

Historically, formation of Delhi was along Yamuna. With time and pressures of urbanization, we have forgotten the roots of the city. Adding bunds and diverting natural flow disturbed the ecology even further. Vision is to create a new institution, commercial, and entertainment hub for the capital city to make way for the riverfront. This will bridge the gap between Delhi and its river.

Rethinking Yamuna Riverfront at Indraprastha Estate

Project Summary 32 hectares of defunt site has the potential to be transformed into a riverfront hub. Through land use analysis, it was observed that most of the area is institutional activity dominant and there is only one small market in the vicinity. Also, west bank of river is high density residential area which lacks open green spaces. Therefore, considering all these factors, a mixed use hub has been proposed with large amount of planned green spaces. With 3-layers planning approach, an attempt has been made to carefully develop people-centric development along with maintaining ecological balance.

17

Master Planning An attempt is made to develop a mixed-use hub comprising of institutional, commercial, residential and entertainment spaces that aims to connect the city with river through porous built form and variety of activities. Taking clues from requirements of the context, area is distributed as- 35% institution, 30% commercial, 30%residential and 5% services. Existing metro station is connected to the existing Chatt Puja Ghat through central green pedestrian spine. Further, elevated walkway connects the metro Concourse level to institutional area and commercial podium welcomes Pedestrians through sloping climbable roof. Existing greens have been retained and area with large patch of trees is planned as city forest area with a small pond. Taking inspiration from Chandigarh and Toyota woven city, Grid planning is done with blocks size small enough for better walkability and large enough for better efficiency. Building forms in these blocks are designed to interact with each and further lead to riverfront. 3 variety of built forms are planned- for road front, river front and pedestrian spine. Water reservoir is planned to prevent floods during monsoons and to provide water in dry season. The built form of this reservoir is planned such that it also acts as a public space. Also, huge wetland will help replenish ground water.

Vision Vision is to re-arrange and redensify the settlement with a consideration of future and creating a people-centric and non-motorization transportation district. 28

Sarojini Nagar Redevelopment

Master Planning The master plan aims at creating a vehicular free passage throughout Sarojini Nagar. The major roads have been converted to under-passes that lead straight into the basement. The ecology green corridors on top promotes the vast biodiversity as well as community living. We envision Sarojini Nagar to be a vibrant place to live, work and play, a place with well-connected neighbourhoods along with enhanced economic growth and cultural diversity. Porous built form makes district centre as a focus point. The inherent potentials of the site are strategically utilized. Metro station plaza is planned with mixed use development. 95 % of the existing trees are retained and pedestrian spines are planned along huge chunks of greens. People-centric spaces are ensured by creating pedestrian and bicycle only routes and zones, reducing domination by autorickshaws in market area. Vehicular access is restricted to certain points. 2 pedestrian spines welcomes residents and directs them towards Community green which is further connected to main commercial plaza. Row housing is efficiently planned to redensify the area without compromizing the green areas. Site Plan

Sarojini Nagar Redevelopment

Key plan

Commercial Plaza The famous Sarojini Nagar Market was originally a local market but now it caters to entire city. Existing market area is quite congested. Most of the footfall comes via metro. To reach the market area from Sarojini Nagar metro station, one has to cross heavily congested road. The proposed masterplan combines metro station plaza with the market plaza, thereby creating a safe pedestrian only zone. This commercial plaza is also connected to the community green area which wlcomes all residents through pedestrian spine. Graduation Project- Urban Design Studio

Service Apartments

Key plan

Service Apartments are planned for people with jobs in the vicinity. Since these will cater to various kinds of population, therfore the requirment will be variable. Therefore, three types of service apartments are planned. The flexible arrangements of 1bhk, 2bhk and 3bhk apartments allows to create multiple terraces at different levels. These terraces are east-side facing overlooking at commercial plaza and community green. These service apartments are connected to the commercial plaza via underpass.

Design Development and Budget Tentative Budget came out to be 7 crores (initial budget was 3 crores). Dr. Jain was dumbstruck and decided to postpone the project. Then, principal architect suggested the client to construct in phases and multiple options along with tentative budgets were prepared for the client to decide. Client finalized the option with B+G+1 and insisted on shifting OT to the basement. Sunken Court was proposed for 2 purposes- firstly to ensure daylight in OT-complex, secondly to shift canteen to a shaded place. Professional Work

Waterproofing Since, water table level is high in Punjab, in this case -3’ from NGL (-4’-0” from road level), waterproofing details were very crutial to ensure useable and clean basement. Therefore, double layers of protection were planned. First layer was of HDPE membrane and second is the concrete itself as crystalline concrete has been used.

The healthcare industry is traditionally associated with sterile white palettes. This is not the most welcoming tone in many situations, but this is particularly true in waiting areas or meeting spaces such as reception or onsite cafes, places where you want patients to feel calm. However, to add vibrancy subtle colors have been used in the waiting hall.

A RE

This project comes under PWD Delhi (Healthcare). On 10,000 sqm of site a New Block of FSL is proposed which is connected to the existing building on upper floors. The brief was to achieve maximum possible FAR. Total FAR area achieved (Existing block + Proposed block) is 11925.88 sq.m. In order to cater this area, large number of parking spaces is required. Therefore, we proposed automated MLCP above ESS (Electrical and Services Station) block along with some double stack parking on stilt floor. There is provision of crime science lab, guest rooms and dormitory on the ground floor. On upper floors, open plan labs and corridor cum open office are planned for flexibility and to increase efficiency of spaces. S

Working Drawings After Design Development Stage, a site survey was conducted, it was observed that actual distance between existing block and site boundary was less than distance in drawings. So, in order to ensure minimum space for fire tender movement without damaging existing trees near boundary wall, building was resized and minor changes were planned in the layout. As per those changes, working drawings were produced 4
