URBAN
POSTGRADUATE COLLEGE FOR MUSIC AND FINE ARTS LOCATION: ROCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM This project explores the theme of urban infill and is located at challenging historic context. A postgraduate college for a University of music and fine arts is required to be built between the cathedral in Rochester and the Norman castle nearby. New music equipment and rooms, residential accommodation and public social areas will be set on the site. The design concept of the new college is aimed to blend in with the surrounding contexts and contours as well as adapting sustainable design to create a comfortable environment for the students.

Site Access
Site Location Map
There are different types of shops located on the main streets, such as pubs, restaurants, hotels, groceries, information centre. The Rochester Cathedral and the Norman Castle in the centre of the main street are one of the tourist sites.
Traffic Density
Sun path, site access points, traffic density and car park areas are some of the elements that affect the design of the college. Site with south-east facing angle optimises natural day lighting and advantages for materials with good thermal mass. All the site access points will be relocated and adjusted according to the needs. Furthermore, the road between the site and the Cathedral are pedestrianised due to busy traffic. Last but not least, the college should also provide sufficient car park areas for visitors and teachers. Postgraduate Student Flat
The student flat building is located between two existing houses along the main street. It contains eight flats which are planned on both ends and leaving a void in the centre acting as the main circulation. Natural daylight penetrate through the skylights and brightens up interior space.
Cafe
The second cafe in front of the student flat is acting as a connection between the main street and the college campus. Sliding doors are used at the front entrance which creates a relaxing and casual environment for students and visitors.

Sketch model - Library area
An open area is remained outside the library which provided outdoor reading area for students. The ground floor level of the library is one floor lower than the pedestrian path and they are connected by installing new staircases. The outdoor study area is more flexible and welcoming.

Site Access
After the renovation of the site area, the landscape pattern in the campus area is separated from the main street. The site is pedetrianised and a cycling path is built accross the campus area which encourages the students to ride instead of driving cars and also for safety reason.
Landscape Design
Different shadings of exposed concrete is arranged in strip pattern which corresponds to the geometrical shape of the building. The public area between the Cathedral and the college is mainly paved with concrete flooring. On the other hand, there are more green area for the enclosed courtyards along the castle wall.
Institution: University of Kent, UK / Academic, January - May, 2014 / Tutor: Michael Richards
Library - External Reading Area
The new staircase outside the library connects the external reading area and the pedestrian path. This provides more flexible reading spaces for the students to relax and study. In addition, Students can also go into the library directy through the second entrance instead of passing through the main entrance and the workshops.

MASTERPLANNING AND STUDENT FLATS LOCATION: CANTERBURY, UNITED KINGDOM A public carpark at the Canterbury City Centre is renovated into a shared area for four new buildings: the student housing, student flats, boarding house and educational building. The remaining carpark spaces will be turned into green areas which provide communal space for the users. The design of the four buildings follows the modular building system and adapts sustainable elements.

Credits: The design of the student housing, student flats, the boarding house and the educational building are designed by a team of four: Kerry Weaver, Petra Inthewoods, Bayan Dahdah and Lai Ka Weng. The shape of the four buildings are designed individually.
The site are reconstructed into a shared area among four buildings: student housing, student flats, boarding house and educational building. The concept of the masterplan is based on the shape of a hand. The fingers represents the four buildings and the gap represents the circulation. The buildings are rotated according to the sun path which can optimise the natural sunlight penetration and reduce the use of artificial lightings.

Paths Division
The student flat building is located at the centre of the site and facing the river. The route between the student flat and the student housing is separated into four parts: green area, pedestrian path and cycling path.
Initial Public Landscape Concept
The open area between the student flat and the boarding house is rearranged into a communal area for the public. It is connected to the other side of the river with concrete platforms. External funitures will be fixed in the open space for people to relax and chill.

South Elevation
The perspective section cuts through the en-suite bedrooms of the student flat. It shows the relationship between the external public space and the student flats, the bedrooms and the internal courtyard. The bedrooms on the ground floor are raised 1 metre high for privacy reason and the risk of flooding. The layout of the bedrooms and shared kitchens are regular. Six en-suite bedrooms shared one kitchen and the roof garden is shared among all the students. The three facades facing the public space are covered with perforated timber cladding. Furthermore, the use of the exposed concrete walls in the courtyard optimises the performance of thermal mass.
