MERCATO 24’ OTTAWA, ON
Mercato 24’ is a project that took place in the city of Ottawa in a suburban area known as Little Italy. Through studying the sites various Community Design Plans (CDP) and researching various proposals what we came to develop was our proposal - Mercato 24’. The site, confined between Gladstone Avenue and Oak Street, is defined by the intersection of the cities Light Rail Transit Line that splits the site into two halves. In the cities future development plans, the site is soon to house
a new LRT station - this defining the future development of the site. The city of Ottawa intends to focus future growth of the city in and around new and existing transit stations. The response to this is to direct Mercato 24’ towards a Transit Oriented Design (TOD), focusing the sites density around the new LRT hub. To support the increased density to be placed on the site, a series of urban moments have been placed within the design such as re-furbishing the existing bike path along the rail to connect to a tiered pedestrian promenade

encouraging traffic through and around the site. These urban moves are then to be supported by a porous building fabric with structures that encourage engagement and interaction among residents and the public. This project then asked us to look at our site on a smaller scale by choosing a structure to develop on the site. This then allowed myself to create a structure that speaks specifically to Mercato 24.’

MERCAT0 24’ - LITTLE ITALY 09. 2018 - 12.2018 OTTAWA, ON STUDIO 6 PROJECT EXISTING SITE CONDITIONS
Mercato 24 is a project located within the confines of Ottawa in a suburban region known as Little Italy. Approximately 22 aces in size the site has been laid out by the Secondary Plan to be an area of future intensification with the insertion of a new Light Rail Transit Station situated between Carling and Bayview Station.

current demographic. The sites demographic consists of various art platforms, studios, federal government facilities and a family-oriented neighbourhood.
Mercato 24 aimed to re-urbanize the site in a variety ways - implementing structures that continue to house and facilitate the artist community, open and green spaces that integrate the major bicycle routes intersecting the site as well as a new skyline that blends with the existing fabric while also becoming a new beacon

existing site. The new proposal aims to take these spaces and give them back to the community in the form of public space, green space and protected pathways
The existing site was characterized by an abundance of surface parking and forgotten pockets of land. In the new proposal, this abundance of surface parking and forgotten areas have been given back to the community in the form of a pedestrian promenade with sunken platforms to house markets and art exhibits, a protected bicycle path as well as green spaces. Surrounding these open spaces are structures catered to house residents, studios, galleries, community spaces and a grocery store. The plan looked to the existing fabric to

THE BUILDING COMMENCED WITH A CONNECTION TO BE MADE AMONGST THE EXISTING RESIDENTIAL FABRIC AND THE NEW PUBLIC AND RESIDENTIAL REALM
THE SPLITTING OF THE BLOCK TO INCREASE CONNECTIVITY THEN RESULTED IN TWO EXTRUSIONS
THESE EXTRUSIONS WERE THEN ADJUSTED TO WORK WITH THE EXISTING BUILDING FABRIC HEIGHT. THIS RESULTED IN A STEPPING BACK OF THE BUILDING FACADE ON THE EAST
TO THEN HAVE THESE TWO SEPARATE STRUCTURES COME TOGETHER TO BECOME A COHESIVE DESIGN, AN ABOVE GRADE BRIDE WAS INTRODUCED AS A MEANS OF CONNECTION
THE SPACE BETWEEN THESE TWO STRUCTURES THEN RESULTED IN A SEMI-PRIVATE RESIDENTIAL COURTYARD THAT INTRODUCES A NEW PROGRAM TO THE RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE

OVERHANG A small but important detail amonst the townhomes are the overhangs and extrusions that enclose each dwelling. This sepration allows for a more personal relationship to be made amongs the homes as a partitioned facaded brings individuality.
SHIFT IN GRADE The shift in elevation from the public realm and the semi-private realm allows for a new relationship to made between the dwellings and the commercial fronts. The seperation allows for a more intimate interaction amongst residents and their home fronts.

LANDSCAPE & PLANTERS The insertion of front lawns as well as garden beds creates an environment suitable to the neighbouring residential homes in close proximity. The mixture of soft and hard landscaping brings a more inviting and relaxed atmosphere.
MATERIAL The three shifts in paving are representative of the shifts in privacy. Change in material is made from the public, to semi-private to private.

The entrances to these town homes are surrounded by greenery and pavings to create an inviting spaces for residents as well as connecting this new fabric with the existing residential fabric . It is with this courtyard space also acting as through way between the existing fabric and the new that the courtyard space is meant to feel more inclusive than exclusive. This want to create an inclusive space is then expressed further by inserting commercial programming along the outer edge of the structure where sidewalks have been widened and placed with plantings and outdoor seating to invite residents to walk and enjoy the amenities. The amenity spaces would consists of programs such as cafes, restaurants and art supply stores to speak to the programs that took place on the existing site.
3
The structure is composed of two buildings, one seven stories and the other four. The height offset between the two structures allows for a relationship to be made with the new structure and the existing infrastructure to its East. The reduction of height of the right structure as well as the stepping back of the structures form in the back to form terraces allows for the building to speak to the two-story residential buildings in its proximity. Situated between these two structures is then a recessed courtyard. Within this semi-private courtyard are the main entrances to the town homes at grade.
5 6
This community of Little Italy is one that puts emphasis on the artistic community as the existing structures consisted of artist studios, pottery studios and galleries. I wanted to create a structures where its form fits to the existing fabric but has a facade that sets it a part from surrounding structures to create a sense of place making and landmark for the site. To then have this focal point designated to the artistic community has then helped to create a space in which existing residents on the site can enjoy and endeavor.

2018 | MURRAY MURRAY
DIRECTOR’S PROJECT 2018:
MURRAY MURRAY THEME: DOORS
The theme of this years Murray Murray project was doors into the future. I was given the door into the year 2060. to represent this what I composed was a series of five axonometric landscapes that tell the story of our landscaped from past, present to future. The axo commences with a blank landscape represent earth before impacted by humanity. As we progress down the second landscape show the evolution of the landscape from weather and time. After this we reach a landscape perfectly flat and intensified with suburban development represent the landscape of mid-19th-century America. Progressing forward is then a series of dense towers to show the need to intensify to keep up with rapid urbanization. The last landscape is then a commentary on the future that we may find ourselves having to start all over again as our impact on earth may eventually become too much for the earth to withstand.

OTTAWA OFFSET OTTAWA, ON
Ottawa intends to control growth through the expansion of public infrastructure and to intensify around new and existing transit hubs. The site exists between two of Ottawa’s planned transit hubs and consists of a combination of big box stores, light industrial, and the St. Laurent Mall. The current fabric of the site neither addresses the cities future growth plan’s, nor does it integrate with its surrounding context.
In response, the proposal creates a vibrant urban environment through the combination of a series of moments throughout the site and a streamlined transportation network. These strategies help the site in meeting Ottawa’s future density needs, in turn, creating a place for the community to congregate via public and private transportation. The proposal creates a continuity within the cities urban fabric that was previously missing.
21
The proposal repositions Coventry Road in order to improve connectivity between major north-south streets, extends the northern residential grid downward into the site, re-orients the entrance to St. Laurent Mall to fit an urban context, and provides density centered around new LRT stops.

allow for a smoother flow of traffic. The street was also widened to allow for an implication of a Complete Street where all modes of traffic are taken into its design and form
NORTH -SOUTH CONNECTIONS The existing neighbourhood, once cut off, is now joined via a new connecting road. In addition, the existing bridge road over the Queensway is met with a roundabout to help the flow of traffic due to the multiple roads that intersect at this point

URBAN FABRIC BREAKDOWN- The St. Laurent site, once occupied by a loose array of big - box stores, required a plan that took advantage of the site’s access to Ottawa’s transportation system. The area, characterized by transit hubs at either end, was once dominated by the car. With the new urban fabric, all modes of transportation are put as a priority, pushing the envelope for a design that encompasses complete streets.

‘KANAL ISTANBUL’
Turkey has proposed a project named “Kanal Istanbul” that consists of inserting a 45- kilometer waterway through Turkey in order to reduce shipping traffic on the busy Bosphorus strait. This would then turn the European half of Istanbul into an island, in addition, connecting the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara. Listed below are regions of Istanbul that would be directly affected by the insertion of the new waterway.
BLACK SEA
An area that is defined by agriculture, fishing and livestock breeding. Main exports produced here are olive oil, flowers and artichokes
This area is adjacent to a fresh water lake that was once used as a main water source for Istanbul in the 19th century
An area dominated by mostly the working-class. Within the confines of this area are mostly industrial type buildings
A rural region that is focused around the agriculture industry
A rural farming area that is home to about 825 residents
An area composed mostly of farmland. The canal would run right through their farms, this then threatening the future viability of their land

MAPPING ISTANBUL
Project “Mapping Istanbul” consisted of studying a major project called “Kanal Istanbul” that consists of excavating a new canal through Istanbul adjacent to the Bosphorus Strait. The Bosphorus Strait, currently the main shipping route for most imports and exports, is seen to be overcrowded by the current President. This has then resulted in the proposal to insert a new canal as it is predicted that this will ease traffic flow through the Bosphorus Strait. However, the main issue at hand is the impact that the new canal will have
on current infrastructure as well as the nature of Istanbul itself. The creation of this canal would mean to cut through farms, homes, and villages - displacement and insecurity being forced upon residents and landowners who currently reside along the new canal’s path of travel. The following maps illustrate the magnitude, path of travel and future impact that the new canal will have on Istanbul. I intend these maps to demonstrate the vast impact that this canal will have on the
27
landscape and who is at risk with its implementation. On the map, you will be able to find six names that are the major villages and bodies of water that this project will impact.
