01 OTTAWA OFFSET TOD URBAN TRANSFORMATION A COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION PROJECT 3RD YEAR FALL SEMESTER Professors: Prof. Benjamin Gianni & Amy Falkner Location: Ottawa, ON This site, adjacent to the Overbrook community of Ottawa, has been subjected to various urban revitalization projects over the past years. My project team was given the task to create a mixed-use community corresponding to transit-oriented design. The site features two transit stations at either end as well as proximity to a major highway. The project aims to provide a programmatic design that enhances the community both physically and economically.

OTTAWA OFFSET The communit y is currently faced with the task of making the site itself accessible to various forms of transpor tation as presently the site is designed around one - the car. The future expansion of O ttawa’s LRT has opened up the oppor tunit y to rework the current big-box store design strategy to one that promotes interconnectivit y amongst all areas of the site. Areas of focus in the design scheme are transit-oriented design, mixed-use structures as well as the blending of the old urban fabric of the Overbrook communit y with the new.

Urban Fabric Breakdown - The St.Laurent site, once occupied by a loose array of big - box stores, required a plan that took advantage of the site’s access to Ottawa’s transportation system. The area, characterized by transit hubs at either end, was once dominated by the car. With the new urban fabric, all modes of transportation are put as a priority, pushing the envelope for a design that encompasses complete streets.

Essential elements that shaped the organization and planning scheme of the site were the highway; stations included in the future Ottawa LRT expansion and the downtown Ottawa core. By emphasizing these elements, the future of the site and its connectivity can be focused upon.

FORMING CONNECTIONS A critical function of the site is connectivity to and through the site. Major north, south roads include connection by means of a roundabout through existing roads. The east-west connection is embraced as an anomaly on the site, acting as a throughway.

02 THE SQUARE A COMMUNITY DESIGN PROJECT 3RD YEAR FALL SEMESTER Professors: Prof. Benjamin Gianni & Amy Falkner Location: Ottawa, ON I designed ‘The Square’ to be a public market space for the Overbrook community of Ottawa. The Square is intended to promote gathering and interaction between community members and visitors. I designed the area to bring together groups of all ages. The space consists of multi-purpose platforms that encourage a mix of uses and allows people to choose how they want to interact with one another.
